Someone pointed out that she doesn’t make them by hand on the wheel, but rather pours it into a mold that she bought off of Etsy for a much cheaper price than what’s she selling. Yes, the hand painting and firing and glazing is a bit, but she didn’t even make the mold! And the argue that it’s a cup for people with disabilities but doesn’t make the price accessible for most disabled people feels wrong. Idk yall

But I totally get what you mean, like, I've seen small businesses make cheaper hand sculpted and painted one of a kind mugs before
I love Shelby's work, but that's too much. As a small artist myself, if I heard someone say they bought my work out of fear of confrontation over the price, I'd privately empathise with them and address the fact that, while some can afford the price I have to set my work at for an income, I totally get that it isn't accessible for all, and I wish that wasn't the case, and I'd offer them a refund, maybe a slight one off partial refund as like, a goodwill donation to them depending on their financial status. Even being financially restrained myself, simply because I sorely wish so many of us weren't priced out of being able to enjoy ethical art at all.

I keep having to remind people that art is a luxury, not a necessity and unless you're the one creating it, you have absolutely no right to tell a person how much they should be charging. If you don't value it the same way - it's okay just to skip it, to not get it, but to put down artists, to shame them into lowering their prices when the vast majority of artists are severely undercharging is just creating a race to the bottom.

When i found out she doesnt even sculpt the mugs she just uses molds i absolutely lost it. Im shocked anybody pays those prices. Im disabled, and i personally feel like making a pottery mug with 2 handles "for disabled people" is a cop out. If someone has problems holding onto things and gripping, buying something thats going to shatter if you drop it is not exactly the route you want to take if you want your things to last. Especially if youre on disability. I literally get the max and its not enough to live off of, much less be spending $80 USD on a ceramic mug someone painted.

Most of my candles are 7 euros, and that is mostly to buy the wax (I use beeswax made in my country, so it's pretty expensive) and only a tiny bit actually goes to myself.
    She's doing the exact opposite.
Sure, money goes to the materials, and some for her time (depending on how long each one takes her) but not over 100 bucks. ESPECIALLY when she markets them to be for disabled.
Sorry if this comment is all over the place, I'm just so dumbfounded(?) and english isn't my first language!

      @aaljustaal1890 4 месяца назад

@@Number1Pencil I can't give you an exact number because I'm no expert, but when it comes to handmade items you can assume that a good indicator of price would be how long it takes to make something, how involved the process is, and how much/what material is used. For example, I crochet and knit; a sweater that has been made by hand can take weeks, maybe even months to make. Each individual stich needs to be done by hand, the process isn't fast nor easy. Even before factoring in the cost of materials, an item like that can cost well above 100 USD at the least. Now, when you look at mass manufactured knit sweaters that have been made by machines (or the hands of severely underpaid workers), they're far cheaper, seeing a range of maybe 20-80 USD. That's because (notwithstanding underpaying workers) machines are faster and the lack of skilled technical work makes them cheaper. All this to say, pouring clay into a premade mold and painting it with some cute strawberries when it dries isn't the most hands-on, time consuming, or strenuous process that warrants such a price tag imo. I think she SHOULD be compensated for the materials she used as well as producing and hand-painting the cups by herself, but the price she's charging would be a bit outrageous even for a handspun ceramic mug (sorry for the essay, I didn't know I was this passionate about this)

    • @rubymoon72

Shelby’s mugs aren’t hand made either, she just gets molds from gumtree and paints and glazes them. While the art is hand painted and somewhat unique, imo it’s not worth that price.
Also with Shelby’s response, no one would’ve known that it was about her if she didn’t make a vid herself. It also felt kind of weird that she was ‘soo excited that Soph was there to shout out the small businesses’. Can’t an influencer buy things for themselves and not post it? (She posted the haul but that’s not the same as recording during the process of buying it). Maybe it made her feel pressured into buying it? It’s also just really dumb cuz people make fun of expensive Stanley cups but baby an art influencer for feeling sad that the person who bought her mug was shocked about the price. Disability aids have safety standards, so trying to pass a ceramic mug as disability friendly is just absurd, if not outright irresponsible due to the harm it could cause if it breaks. The sincerity of catering to disabled people becomes very questionable if someone isn’t going to try and cater to the full spectrum of what a disabled person needs for a safe and functional item. If she’s using a mould like other comments imply, why not use a different material that won’t shatter? Seriously, what is the point of making items for disabled buyers that they can’t safely use?
As a disabled person, I suspect I would be appalled at a truthful answer to that question, as I already know a lot about how social media marketing for these small businesses work, selling cutesy things always has the veneer of progressivism and inclusivity used to enhance brand identity and appeal to young activists by trying to have them feel as tho buying a product from their store is a demonstratively moral act.
Additionally, disability accessible encompasses both financial accessibility and physical accessibility, you are not being accessible or “disability friendly” if you neglect one over the other as both are the greatest barriers disabled people are up against in every component of their lives.
This small business owner could’ve follow the example of every other company out there and offset production costs for disability-speciality items onto the prices of other items in order to sell it at an accessible price. Doing a “I worked reeeeally hard on it AND made it inclusive 🥺” spill was a tone deaf defence for perpetuating the financial inaccessibility of items that disabled individuals need to counterbalance their physical inability to use the same items as abled bodied individuals.

People with arthritis or motor issues often use items without handles or shatter proof materials. Shelby's cups are made from molds, not hand made. It is not pottery and that is why people are so upset. There is a potter who hand makes her cups and sells them for 20$ who stitched the video to explain that she hand makes, hand paints and hand seals her mugs, she reacted to Shelby's video and said that it seemed a lot for POURED cups.

As an American who has social anxiety (I love the self-checkouts), I would have asked about the price. But if I hadn't, I would have immediately said "no" once I saw the screen with the price. Knowing Americans, probably the screen would have forced a tip too. No way. In USD, that's about $81. $81 is a lot of money. Times are hard.
    The girl was too nice.
The person who "created" the mug is a jerk. How dare you go and criticize that sweet girl who bought your insanely overpriced crappy mug that you didn't design except the pattern (IF she didn't find the pattern on say fabric or something). It's not even an intricate pattern.
I even balk at mug prices at Wal-Mart. I have seen a cute mug at Hobby Lobby and even with a 40% off sale, I was like, "nah."
Maybe if she made them by hand on a potter's wheel (which would take skill), fired them in her own kiln, made the glaze, did special paint with gold flecks, and did this intricate design, maybe it would be worth that much (not to me; I waste money in other areas of life instead of beverage containers). Not a mug you made from a mold and painted a cutesy design (cutesy isn't known for intricacy). Paint a replica of the Mona Lisa by hand on a mug, and we'll talk.

Actually that matches the price of this mug, the artist is Australian so the 125-130 is in Australian dollars. 125 is about 81.50 usd

Yes 😊. I do professional pottery. The only thing that would justify over 50 price is ornate design. And not mold made. Sorry 😊 i promise you it doesn't take much to do some strawberries. My students do them fast. It's basic 101

As an artist, I always love when artists can get paid well for their work BUT this is kinda gross charging that much for a cup that small! I know its hand painted and fired and your spending materials and using electricity and stuff BUT its a mold and you have to take that into account. As well as follower size and how many buyers you have each month or annually (artist is obviously popular on tik tok) when choosing prices. For me personally, ive always focused on putting a fair price for more one of a kind oil paintings but for all my large amounts of key chains and stickers always need to be cheap/ cheaper so its way more accessible!!!! I love making art for art and it should not have to be a luxury. though i get needing to eat and pay for housing, but this is really werid trying to turn it into a complaining video, just offer her a refund and get the cup back, plain and simple.

If it was hand sculpted, maybe the price would be worth it but I do pottery and a slip mold is so easy and quick to use... Especially if you bought it off someone else. And claiming it's supposed to be for disabled people when charging that much is insane, it doesn't even look like a full sized cup

As a potter, she uses moulds and the glazes are very simple looking (not saying its bad or anything) however it is priced extremely high for the piece itself.. not including the materials used which we have no idea of, it just seems to me she was offended and instead of privately saying something she took to tiktok to try and make herself a victim

There are a million factors that go into this, especially staff wages. I get having a higher price, but that’s WAY out of any reasonable range. This might not be comparable, but my uncle runs a mug business where he hand makes (no molds) glazes, and fires the mugs. They are about 30$ and beautiful, I’ve had some for years and the quality is immaculate. (I’m drinking out of one right now)
To hear that these in particular are for people with disabilities, why aren’t the prices more accessible? If it is painting and all of that, streamline the process to cut prices, not as a cop out, but for ACTAUL accessibility

$125 is real close to how much you’d pay for a bougie/designer rich-person mug. I’m guessing the price is more because Shelby is an influencer, and fans wand Shelby’s hand-made mug- not just any hand-made mug.
In response to these videos, a lot of creators posted videos showing how they sell their hand-made mugs for around $50

One thing that rubbed me the wrong way was how Shelby wrote some comments in her deleted video about how Soph is targeting and bullying her small buisness (she wrote more than that but I can't remember exactly what) when Soph barely even mentioned her. Idk but this coupled with some of her other replies just felt really manipulative on Shelbys part.

  • @benwyatt4081

It also seems that Shelby was up that she didn’t shout out her business specifically for promotion in her video. Bc she mentioned in her video that her and the whole market was excited and hoping she was. But unless they asked her to even made a deal with her, possibly even giving her a discount then Sof has no obligation to, or incentive to. I mean if Shelby did give her a discount it would’ve fixed both of those issues. Tho as a small business and content creator she doesn’t have to appeal to influencers either

I went to a con the other week and there was a mug stand, and the mugs were hand crafted and INSANELY detailed to look like 3D gardens and hobbit holes and the price was $80-100s for the most detailed mugs. I totally understood the price, like these mugs looked AMAZING and they were made on a wheel etc. The tiny mugs with barely any detail... um... I'd pay like fifteen dollars max, especially since they use a mold.
