It is much easier to attach a surfboard to your roof using a roof rack or at least a soft wrap for your existing one, They really do a great job of protecting both your board and your rooftop.
FYI: only kooks put their boards on the racks with the fins in back! The reason being is the front strap is positioned behind the fins which is way more secure in a strong headwind. Otherwise, with the fins in back there is a far better chance of the board slipping out , especially by some chance the straps come loose.
Hey I know ya caught a lotta flack for fins in the back ;) but at least you made the vid so I can read the comments! I don't have crossbars eithers, so I'll probably put it fins up to front and then get some foam to put under the board and strap to roof rails.
Although not quite as aerodynamic, another safer way is fins up and forward. In case the board slips it can catch on a fin when traveling forward. Also I've found it helpful when using your straps, to strap directly under and the horizontal bars (if you have them) and back over the board(s) rather than out to the bars than run lengthwise with the automobile. Very helpful when racking a SUP or Longboard.
Such a stupid reason. I always here there. Strap your board properly. The fins shouldn’t ever be relied on to catch your board that you didn’t tie down properly.
Lol this is an easy indicator to know if someone is a kook driving around. Although if you take fins off everytime like I do, it doesn’t really matter. The fins front method only works if you have fins on so if it did somehow come loose the fins would catch.
@@Jay-fq8uz I tie mine down fins back. I ride longboards, mid lengths, short boards and foils. How someone tied down a board has absolutely nothing to do with their skill. Boards travel this way through water. It makes sense for them to travel this way through air. What is your LEGITIMATE reason for fins back? The fins catching the board from sliding off that your dumbass didn’t tie down properly? Newsflash: if you didn’t tie it down properly, you should be relying on your fins to save you. Such a dumb reason.
@@chrispewkreme everything you say is correct, but if you pull up to a crowded surf spot with your surfboard nose first and deck up like it travels through the water you will instantly be considered a kook aka novice, not my rules. If you want to get set waves, put your surfboard on your car correctly, again not my rules.

Good tip...
Solid point, but if you secure the board properly and make sure it’s tight, it’s more than likely not going anywhere.
i know this comment is three years ago but i always leave fins in the back because i like how it looks and never had a problem
Yeah man. I have to agree.

Kook of the day!!!!
3 times world champ!
Why don't they just build cars with rails installed the correct way (ie across the car) out of the factory?

Sorry, only kooks do it that way. Fins first always. Cheers

Oh and out in the zoo with like Eli go already
Theres no roof rack on the car!
It’s a soft top…. Doesn’t matter
Wrong way smoky!
