@@i10i60so? If u are in a certain community you have to follow their guidelines and not just act however u want and not care about their ethics or traditions. If u're gonna fo that don't complain about being called out by the locals.

      @i10i60 11 месяцев назад

@@rachel5478 Hmm. You're so shallow that you've somehow deluded yourself into thinking you're doing something good.
Let's get to the root, love. This is Ugandan culture-
There are an estimated 5 million child brides in Uganda. 1.3 million of them are under 15 years of age.
They're not married to teenage boys I'll tell you that.
1 in 4 women report that their first sexual encounter was rape. Uganda has a population of 49 million. Yet there are only 1519 cases of rape that are filed, And of these rape cases only 19 received rape sentencing, the rest got off; according to the data of a year.
So Uganda has a serious women's rights and gender inequality issue.
This is rooted in Ugandan culture.
Such as this dressing modest thing.
According to many research studies, dressing modestly doesn't prevent sexual crimes at all.
Infact most sexual crimes are commited by men the women already knew.
Short clothes, or lust, sexual attractiveness have little role to play in these crimes.
If modest clothing helped preven sexual crimes, women in Islamic countries would be safe.
So where does this dressing modest thing come from? It's a way to blame women and take accountability away from men in sexual crimes.
Stop trying to protect cultures, guidelines, etc. that are blatantly harmful.
And don't call them "ethics" for fucks sake. You're insulting the word.
Culture is frequently bad and harmful, it must be stopped.

Thank you so much for sharing. I was very curious about what the word “muzungu” and what it may actually mean. My Google search indicates it means, “wanderer”…which I’m guessing is another way to say “traveler.” Saying that to someone from somewhere else makes sense.
Where I live in the United States, I’ve heard/said, “Hi, stranger…” when speaking to someone who looks/sounds like they may be from somewhere else (and might look like the need/want help).
When I myself say that phrase, it’s just my kind version of a name placeholder…I might just as easily say, “Hi, sir/ma’am. How can I help you?” I only use “stranger” or something similar until I learn the person’s name. Then I use their name, or “friend” when speaking with them.
Anyway, thanks for sharing. I just started following you on RUclips so that hopefully I can learn more from you. I love how straightforwardly you explain. Someday I would like to visit your country.

@@LisaAngel-vk9dz the word comes from the swahili which means foreigner not white person. It has come to colloquially refer to white person as they are regarded as foreigners.
Edit: I initially apologized but after my experiences and doing further research, i take it back. The literal definition is not white person and was in fact used to describe “restless” visitors. And as I stated has come to mean white peson.
From Mahmood Mamdani, the Ugandan scholar of Indian descent who was the Director of Makerere University, and is a Professor at Columbia University in his article, ‘When Does a Settler Become a Native? Reflections of the Colonial Roots of Citizenship in Equatorial and South Africa’: “The word for the white settler in Kiswahili is mzungu. Mzungu, however, does not literally mean a white person. It simply means a restless person, a person who will not stay in one place, a person full of anxieties. It comes from the verb kuzunguka. Hawa wana zunguka kwa nini? Why are these people always so restless?”
As shown above, the etymology doesn’t mean white, but by the 90s (when this article was written) meant white settler, and then according to posters below, changed again to just mean white people. In mine and others experiences on here it was used on non-white people.
Despite initially independently apologizing to posters and trying to have civil discussions/ ask genuine questions from those below in the conversations, I instead have been accused of arguing, and called annoying, a know-it-all, and a liar among other things. When you result in name-calling I think that speaks volumes.
Also, as a side note, when you decide to speak among yourselves about a third party it also shows your true character. You can just respond to me and my questions/comments directly including the name calling. Very mature. Seems not to be a platform where you can actually have a civil, productive conversation, especially when others’ experiences may differ. Wish everyone the best. ✌️

I've always been modest... I didn't even stop wearing opera gloves until about a decade ago...lol I used to REALLY cover up, though ngl, I am, as a woman, getting tired of us being blamed for the behavior of men. If they are adults, they should be able to control themselves and stop blaming us for their weaknesses, because it's also weak to blame another for your actions. We see men walking around with nothing on but shorts, and we can act like we have some sense, like we have some self control. No matter how handsome, gorgeous, attractive a man is, I'm not going to whistle at him, I'm not going to "Hey baby!", I'm not going to make him feel like an object, because I have class and self-control... We seriously need to stop excusing men for behavior they can definitely control. Societies all over the world make too many excuses for the terrible behavior some men do and then blame women for. Now, all that being said, I understand culture, but culture also has room to grow, all humans and cultures are capable.

100% this I would cover up either way and respect the culture in that way but it’s so obvuously about sexual harassment. It shouldn’t just be part of the culture. Like you said we all have room to grow especially culturally and grown men need to apparently be taught how to be grown men universally.

It's honestly kinda sad that a lot of men don't know you can just practice resisting the temptation of random attractive women. I've had talks about this and some guys really think it's impossible like: 'if you have a healthy testosterone level you're going to be distracted by every woman you see' and in some cases catcalling is part of that I guess
But at the end of the day these guys sabotage their own happiness with their sexual frustration

It being socially acceptable to be violent or gross towards someone because of how they dress is not something to be proud of and complacency is an enabler. I'm tired of people pretending like the problems in their country is "just the culture" these type of things are beyond that. Infringing on someone's rights is infringing on someone's rights, period.

It’s important to recognize that everything is not only about you, what you like, or how you wish to behave. The world is not obligated to shift to accommodate you as you are. To believe so is plain and simple, abject narcissism.
When we go out into the world and engage with other cultures, it’s wholly unrealistic to expect them to embrace us as we are, especially if it’s counter to their culture.
We invite much of the treatment we receive. Whether or not we believe that is justified doesn't change the reality of being a human being in a complex world.
If you want to be treated with respect, conduct yourself respectfully ton the context of the time and place. If you are unwilling to do that, stay home, or be prepared to be offended and disappointed.

One of my relative has been r*ped by another sub-african man. Which is still free due to the justice of my country, he is known but police does nothing.

I'm not according to you about "efforts from both side": when I come in your country I have to follow your rules/morals. I don't have to ask you to "adapt" to mine, I will have to learn and follow yours, the effort is on one side only.
