This time the emphasis is more on the atmosphere and a little lacking guitar, but I liked this gloom for me, Dynatron is one of the best performers in the synthwave genre. Liked it the most Close Encounter this is definitely a new sound and especially pleased with the fat guitar and in general the whole album is different from previous works. I also want to mention the great title track Origins, which I've been listening to for a month, it's definitely the most eye-catching track on the album.
    My assessment 8/10

I will start this review by saying that these days, making standout synthwave is difficult. Dynatron's first album "Escape Velocity" came out 9 years ago. That's right, it's been almost a decade. Crazy how time flies. Since then we've seen the genre explode due to the "modern but 80's" aesthetic catching on very well with the modern zoomer and millennial crowd, and even with popular artists and studios incorporating some of it into their mainstream hits. Meanwhile here in the underground we've seen so many artists pop up that I lost count years ago, many classic artists have faded into obscurity (remember Tommy86, Cartridge1987, and Bourgeoisie?) while some new artists have shined. Despite this the unfortunate truth is that this genre has become victim to its own irony and become a cliche stereotype in and of itself. So many new albums come out these days which sound very cookie cutter and generic, really what this means is that synthwave is a mature genre now, kind of like house, techno, dubstep, or any other mainstay electronic genre you can think of as being perennial.
However, _all_ this in mind, "Origins" as an album rekindles that original synthwave fire in me like little else. Not to say that there haven't been other good artists making good music of this and similar styles, but either they are just fun bangers or have somewhat departed from the synthwave style and become their own thing (think Perturbator and Dan Terminus).. And this, my lovely friends, is where Dynatron stands unique. Here we have a moving, epic, atmospheric and yet melodic album which encapsulates all the mystery and intrigue I felt when I first discovered this genre over 6 years ago. "Origins" is a very poetic name for this album, as all of the sounds here are absolutely classic Dynatron; straight from his origins. One would think that with all these classic sounds that there'd be no innovation here, that the album would sound like a rehash of his old stuff, but Dynatron didn't spend 5 years crafting this LP for nothing. Allow me to explain.
Almost all of the tracks on here have _similar_ sounds to Dynatron's older albums, but in totality there are so many subtle differences that if you mixed these in to an older Dynatron album, you could immediately tell which track was new even if you had never heard this album before. This is achieved through a combination of tweaked sound design, tighter mixing, and new melodies. For example on the track "Uncertain Destiny" we hear all the classic guitars and and synth plucks, but the way they're integrated into the track is different. Instead of being used for the overall melody, they are only there as embellishments to the real star of the show, that beautiful spacey lead/pad sound which plays the true lead melody. Additionally, in the earlier parts of the track, the little sound effects that accompany it sound familiar, but have a much more complex and evolving execution to them than anything I've heard on previous Dynatron tracks. It's one of the things that gives away how long it must have taken to craft these songs, despite many of them sounding relatively straightforward on a surface level. Dynatron's new direction with sound design and how it's implemented isn't restricted to "Uncertain Destiny" though, you can hear it all over the album, from the intro to "Future" where new styles of pads are layered with classic saw waves very seamlessly, to the sound effects in "Portal", to the siren accentuating the melody and beat in "Tumbling Upwards", to the complex sounding synth swells and synth bass in "Epilogue". If you haven't dipped your toes into music production, it can be hard to appreciate how hard it is to make new, fresh sounds that work with your old sounds, and evoke the same feeling and style that they do without making something that sounds like crap because you over tweaked it. Dynatron did an incredible job with the sound design on this album, it's fresh, it's classic, it's pleasant, and yet it's epic and cinematic at the same time. Beautiful.
But what about the melodies? Melodically I think this album is complex but hides it well due to Dynatron wanting it to be atmospheric. Fast, complicated melodies (think classical music like Paganini) tend to ruin a good sense of atmosphere, so it is an especially hard challenge to create an involving melody that doesn't take away from the scene the music is trying to portray, especially when it comes to large cinematic soundscapes like we have here. Pacing wise the album runs from slow to what I would call medium slow, the intros to some tracks like "Origins", "Close Encounter", and "Future" are incredibly drawn out by the standards of modern music, and border on ambient (which is something I personally really like). Yet on these same tracks the melodies these intros lead into become medium paced, and never seem to exactly repeat, always going in a direction you slightly didn't expect, but that eventually resolves into a satisfying stop and integration with the rest of the mix. I think "Future" really exemplifies this well. I personally think there's a lot of "Dust of the Saturn" influence in the composition of these tracks, as we can see similar structures of a slow, brooding intro develop into a complex medium paced track with layered melodies and satisfying drums. Overall I think that structurally and melodically this album is a mix between "Aeternus" and "A Rigel Axiom", which I personally am very much a fan of, but wouldn't be surprised if some listeners wanted something faster. But screw that anyways, space is _huge_, and exploring it slow and mysterious, and that's my 2 cents on that.
Finally, mixing. This is something Dynatron has always been good with. Cookie cutter synthwave is an easy genre to mix well, simply because your production elements are simple and there aren't too many sounds being played on top of eachother. It is however a significantly harder endeavor to mix something like this album, where we have *BIG* percussion below *BIG* pads below *CHUNKY* guitars below *BIG* leads. You can see some artists like Perturbator who have a similar amount of powerful elements in their music get so caught up in expressing their raw emotion that the mixing on their tracks ends up being very muddled, and it becomes hard to distinguish individual sounds. Dynatron however keeps the things you want to hear mixed mixed, and the things you want to hear individually well separated. None of the sounds fight eachother. Everything is just the right texture, frequency range, and volume to come through with power, authority, and delicacy where need be. The only thing I would have personally suggested is making the bass melody on "Origins" a little clearer, but maybe doing that would have interfered with some other part of the mix, I cannot say for sure. Either way, any aspiring producer should take note of the mixing and mastering here, because it is excellent.
Fittingly enough, "A New Place" is the track on here that most heavily departs from Dynatron's older music. That soft synth lead melody is not something I've really heard him do before, especially when coupled with the background (pad?) melody sound. It sounds bittersweet, like he's regretful of the current state of affairs but is hopeful towards what he can build going forwards, an emotional state the tracks in the rest of the album also continue to play off of, though less intensely as you make your way along the runtime. By the end of this album you come from a place of heavy emotional baggage and reach one of astoundment, wonder, and discovery. I think this may be a sentiment and a story which Dynatron has wanted to express for a while, but creating the album probably posed a significant challenge, and I wouldn't be surprised if extended bouts of artist's block were part of the journey.
I'm happy to report that I love this album. It's easily on par with anything Dynatron has put out in the past not only in musical skill and complexity, but also in the sense of awe and "whoa" factor that it instills in me. I'll admit that I'm biased. I love space, I love aerospace technology and the idea of exploring and colonizing not only the solar system but conquering our stellar neighborhood, mining out asteroids and creating humanity's future amongst the stars. The amazing thing is that due to incredible technological advancements being made across the aerospace, energy, construction, and medical sectors this future is one that our generation will likely see and get to participate it. And when we're chilling on Olympus Mons, taking in the beauty of Saturn's polar storms in person, diving the seas of Europa, or zipping around the asteroid belt, I'll remember to thank Dynatron and the hope his albums instilled in me. To this end, "Origins" is a perfect addition to the collection, and that concludes my review. Awesome work Jeppe!
