Loved the over-all exuberance of the vid! fun! Reminds me a lot of me and my bestie (by the way - I was told by a Milanese friend that the turning on the taurus.. parts.. is not for any old good luck, but for good luck regarding fertilit,. so... idk...) I’m a tiny bit surprised. From my years of living in Rome, yes the yarnshops are quite different than in other countries, but they often have a lot of knowledge (much like the traditional lingerie shops before intimi****I times, …ahem) so I was astonished to hear that they don’t know any local yarns in that shop. Lots of nerdy yarn rambling now - continue on your own peril and only if interested in that: There is LOTS of yarn produced in the north of Italy as far as I know. Much of it for the fashion industry, but in part also for knitting. So generally speaking there is „yarn from Italy“. Not necessarily all grown there, (reasons see below), but many of the European yarn companies (think Isager, Hobbii, Knitting for Olive, Lana Grossa and also US ones like Berroco or Purl Soho for that matter) have yarns manufactured in Italy, in part because the milling equipment doesn’t exist anymore everywhere. But there are also yarn brands directly from Italy, big ones like Laines du Nord or Gedifra, or small ones like Lanivendole, filature cervinia. Quick search on ravelry gives over 2000 yarns produced in Italy as of Dec 2024, and that is only with 14% of the yarns in the database updated with this feature of origin) Smaller producers and hand-dyers do exist as well, you could check out Martina Badialis (@badialimaknits) channel, I think she is Milan based. (Hasn’t posted in a while, but the existing videos are very interesting - oh, and Italian, I think.) I’m sure you are aware of this, but I’ll just throw it in here regarding 3:01 just in case someone here doesn’t know: To my knowledge there are many countries (at least in Europe, and I know in of the US as well) in which sheep farming is divided into wool, meat, milk and for „landscape management“. Tragically, the wool of the latter 3 is rarely used for knitting, because it is considered „too rough“ for todays standards. Instead it is thrown away, in the best case used as fertilizer in gardening. Many of the „fine wool“ sheep breeds that we like for yarn (like Australian Merino) are not suitable for the harsher weather in the northern hemisphere, so most of it is shipped around the globe.
This was such a fun episode! I think I may watch it again. Thank you for the wonderful trip to Milan with your bestie. And I hope she does have a wonderful year to look forward to. ❤🇮🇹🧶🐑
