Mostly just ... patience. Nobody WANTS to be on a 15 hour flight, it's like we're all in misery together. And as far as flight attendants are concerned, I know I couldn't look my best for 15 hours so remember they're operating on very little sleep, too. We're all on this plane, we're all going to get there, nobody is going to get there earlier, just be nice.

Recently, while preparing to board a flight to Rome from Newark, I struck up a conversation with a flight attendant. I felt the need to ask her how SHE was doing. She told me. And then I told her in so many words that I appreciated her. She gave me a hug and held on for an extra second or two. I think she really needed to feel appreciated.

If you're using in ear headphones on a flight I would recommend not putting them in until the cab gets pressurized. The last time I used in-ear headphones on a flight it didn't wait my ears didn't pop and for 2 hours it felt like my eardrums were going to explode. No joke I was sweating and was contemplating asking the flight attendant to land the plane. I didn't fully regained my hearing for at least 3 days.

This happens to me headphones or not. I've tried all the tricks but can't get it to consistently work. I've also found descent to be the worst, but not all the time. Your advice is great though. Going up or down, take out your earphones or use over ears. You can chew gum or swallow, but the thing that works best for me is the hold my nose and gently try and push air out. This causes small pops that equalise everything.
Hope everyone has a good flight!

Better still. A "snood" /tube scarf/ biker scarf (were you wearing one at 9:50?)
      Multi purpose.
If for some reason you're wearing a mask ("2021"?) You can place the mask inside the scarf and pull that up over your nose, no ear loops, more comfortable.
      Sleeping?
Fold into 3-4, great eye mask.
In that configuration, it also holds your earbuds in place.

Another tip for connecting international flights:
There are many international airports that have free shower facilities. If you have the time between flights, it's totally worth using them to freshen up and even change into clean clothes too. I've done this from the YYZ-TPE-NRT flight. YYZ-TPE is a 15 hour flight. With the 3.5 hour layover, it was the perfect time to take a shower and freshen up. That way I felt awake a refreshed for the 4 hour flight to NRT. It made such a huge improvement to the journey :)

1- say hi to your row mates, make it easy for everyone to talk to each other if and when needed.
2- try to plan to get sleep before hand (don't drink coffee, tire yourself out before the flight)
3- Get ear plus, an eye mask and a pillow (these all will put you to sleep)
    4- make sure you're covered.

Also your "fanny pack" suggestion is a very good idea, pulling stuff into or out off my carry on luggage /backpack repeatedly and the remote overhead storage problem as well. Really useful tips. Cool Video, But I have to say.... Isle for the win.
Being in Australia, every flight is basically a long hall flight and having been to 32 countries, my preference is (center row) Isle seats.
The main reason is that you have easy access to bags and the bathroom. If you are traveling with someone, at worst they only need to move over 1 person, not 2.
Also, you get more space for your shoulders and legs, assuming you have a good travel pillow you shouldn't have much movement while sleeping.

Love the Trtl neck pillow! Easy to tuck into a carry on bag too. If you are someone who doesn't have a hard time sleeping in a sitting position, then skip a neck pillow altogether. But as someone who cannot sleep like that, the Trtl is great to have! I've been taking little travel packs of wet wipes/baby wipes with us on trips for years now and I'll never travel without them! Great for freshening up on a plane or to get the grime off your hands while you're out and about. I'll wipe down my face and arms on the plane then put on some lotion just before we land and I feel so much better. If the plane right was hot for some reason, I've been known to go into the bathroom and do a little "mini bath" in there with the wipes. Lol! Reapply lotion and deodorant, brush them teeth and you're good to go!
This might just be me, but I like to bring a water bottle with me. Keep it empty until we get through security then fill it up. That or I buy an overpriced bottle of water at the airport and hold on to it to refill it. Then it doesn't matter if I get tired of carrying it, I can just toss it. Don't have to worry about it getting lost either.

Thanks for the great tips. My lifehack is one you already mentioned, noise cancelling earbuds, the airfly pro Bluetooth transmitter, and the double mini jack adapter. It works great and allows to keep the volume low. I also tried a cheap transmitter from Amazon first, which has good reviews, but it has tons of noise when using in a plane and was impossible to use. So I recommend the airfly pro which works great for me.

For my last long-haul flight, I purchased a Twelve South AirFly Pro Bluetooth Transmitter which is compatible with my bluetooth earbuds and it worked great. It's small and doesn't take up much space, smaller than a car key fob, and it stays charged for a very long time. I have not tried it yet for its other uses, but it is also compatible in certain vehicle bluetooth systems and certain home sound system setups.

Had a 15 hour flight from USA -> Japan last year. Basically I stayed up all night the night before. Boarded the plane dead tired, and fell asleep after take off. Was woken up for about 30 minutes for the in-flight meal, and a bathroom break and basically dozed off again after the meal. When I finally woke up feeling well rested there was only about 3 hours left of the flight. Probably not recommended to stay up all night, but hey it worked! it took 11 hours out of my flight in an instant!

Regarding long-haul flights and window seats, be aware that in some Premium Economy sections, the person on the aisle can recline and fall asleep, trapping and preventing the window seated from exiting the row without waking the neighbor. Happened to me on a JAL flight from Singapore to LAX back in November, 2022.

As a frequent flyer before the authoritarian lockdowns, I can say you've pretty much covered everything that I would do. Good video. Another thing I'd have handy is a bullpoint pen for filling out those pesky immigration entry cards as the flight attendents tend to only carry one or two on them and they've already been taken by someone else who also forgot to carry a pen with them. Have your passport details, accomodation etc already written down ready to fill it out. Also don't throwaway your seat ticket stub as you'll most likely need this when you pass through immigration.

Yeah I've seen that - I have one that can kinda function as both. But I prefer the fanny pack around the waist because I often wear my carry on backpack on my back and my personal item backpack on my front, so a sling doesn't fit very well if it's around my chest area. But if you don't have a front backpack, they work great! Have an awesome trip!

The liquid rule work around also works for things like makeup remover (I don't wear makeup, but I'm guessing at least some of the other viewers probably do) - bring pre-moistened cotton balls/makeup pads/etc. in a baggie and they won't count as liquids. Same goes for antibacterial wipes (as long as it's wipes, and not just a bottle of liquid, they don't count either, even if there's a little bit of liquid in the bottom). I'll note that those are for TSA - what other countries do is completely up to them, and never assume that the rules will be the same as in the U.S. (case and point: when flying back to the States out of FCO 7 years ago, the security officer forced me to take off my glasses because they were apparently setting off the metal detector - they were semi-rimless wire frame, and have never set off any other metal detector I've ever gone through before or since; try to pull that off in the States and the TSO would be committing a federal crime, risking jail time and worse).
As a general rule, for TSA (again, don't assume other countries have the same rules), if you can spray it, pour it, or spread it, it counts as a liquid (although something super chunky, like chicken salad, doesn't count - got that straight from my best friend who's been a TSO for almost 6 years; not sure if super chunky salsa would be the same or not), so things like applesauce, hummus, cooked hot cereal, cream cheese, condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc.), guac, etc., all count as liquids unless they're on something (e.g. a sandwich).
And a quick tip for flying out of Heathrow for any liquids you'll be carrying onto the plane (either in personal item or carryon) - they have a reputation for being extremely strict about the size of liquids bags, so a "TSA approved" liquids bag may or may not be allowed through - they might make you put all of your liquids into one of the 1L ziploc-type bags that they provide at the checkpoint, and if they don't all fit, you may or may not be allowed to take through the ones that don't. So whatever liquids you're taking onto the plane, if you'll be flying out of Heathrow during your trip, make sure those liquids will all fit into a 1L/1qt ziploc, otherwise there's a chance you might be forced to leave one or more of them behind at security there.
Used my AirFly Duo the last 4 times I flew (got it in August, and flew in September and February) - so handy, because I don't use corded earbuds or headphones anymore (it's a giant pain in the butt to keep corded earbuds from falling out of my ears when I put on my noise-cancelling headphones because 1) my ears are so tiny that it only takes the tiniest knock to the wires and they fall out, 2) my kindle's volume only goes so high, and 3) my noise-cancelling headphones are such that when the volume is all the way up, the ambient noise is also jacked up actually louder than it is in real life (super helpful in some instances, like working backstage in a theatre production without mics in a role that involves having to time things to the dialog being spoken on stage, but not so much for listening to audiobooks on the plane)). I can watch movies on my mp3 player (technically my mom's old phone but it hasn't had any service for 3 1/2 years), and even though I can easily connect my earbuds to it, I use my AirFly to save the player's battery, since having both bluetooth on and playing video drains it pretty quickly, so using the AirFly lets me keep bluetooth turned off, saving the player battery big time, which is good because even though I normally only fly domestic (I've done 2 transatlantic trips, but that's it for flying internationally and both were years ago), my travel days are usually 7+ hrs long, which is more than long enough to drain the player's battery all the way if using bluetooth. (I'd consider getting the Pro, but it being only able to be used in one mode at a time, instead of both at the same time, was the deal breaker for me, because I do most of my phone calls using Google Voice because it's free and calling with my phone isn't, and my one computer doesn't have bluetooth capabilities, so I would need something that would go both directions at the same time
I'll massively second someone else's suggestion - powerbank. I won't travel without my Anker PowerCore 10000, because I've had to use it on flights more than once. I never use the USB ports in the seats because 1) it tethers my device, and 2) I always end up accidentally kicking it, knocking it out and potentially even damaging the cord, which is why I hate when planes have the underseat (as in facing forward) power ports under the seat next to the seat it's for - ran into that in September, and it was frickin' annoying because I couldn't have both legs out straight in front of me without kicking the cord of the person next to me, which killed my hips and back.
I always go for the window seat 1) because it tends to be the widest (fun fact, the window seats on little CRJ200s are actually wider than the window seats on 737-800s and 737-900s), 2) because I can pull out my sausage pillow and use it to lean against the wall and help me sleep, and 3) I'm always guaranteed to have at least one armrest - I've been stuck in the middle seat and both people next to me were hogging the armrests - I have to be able to have my elbows sit comfortably next to me because otherwise my shoulders and neck cramp up to no end, which usually triggers a migraine.
I always go for a window seat (if they're available - the only times they weren't were on my last transatlantic flight, and the time when I booked about 3 days before the trip (I always aim to book a minimum of 2 weeks before, but that time I couldn't)), and I usually go for the second to back row, because it's close to the bathroom but still reclines. Gate agents have a habit of offering to move me up (if there are any empty seats on the flight - sometimes there are, sometimes there aren't) because I use a wheelchair, and as long as the seat they're offering to move me to is still a window seat, reclines, and isn't directly over the wing (which blocks the view), I usually (there have been a couple times where I declined because there was a different reason other than being close to the restrooms that I picked the row I did) accept, and that means that even though I always book an economy seat, I sometimes end up sitting in economy plus. There have been times where they've offered to move me further forward to a middle or aisle seat, but I always turn them down in those instances because I will always take a window seat over a non-window further-forward seat, since I can still walk some and middle and aisle seats wreak havoc on my joints because they're so narrow (and I'm not big by any means), at least on the planes I usually fly on.

Good video. If you're at the end of the line getting on? I often put my carry on in a bin in First Class. (I always have a pull out bag with my lap top and things I need while flying.) There's always room in the First Class racks.
I'm always happiest and most comfortable if I don't eat anything on a flight, especially a long flight. Mostly though I eat, fidgets, boredom, something to do. They should offer chips, nuts or a puzzle. They can reuse the puzzles.
Tip for hydration. Keep your mouth closed. When hiking I'd reach off the trail for a clean piece of grass, friends would suck on a pebble. I've been in very hot conditions and while 'the experts say' sucking on a blade of grass doesn't reduce your water need -- in my experience it does. Not sure how you'd do this on a plane. You need to be hydrated, but if you can drink less, then fewer trips climbing over others to use the dirty bathroom. (Or figure out how to crawl over the comatose Ambien corpse slumped over. I never did; if I had Naloxone I'd have zapped her back to life.) Waiting for the bathroom is time to do some stretching. If I have good access I'll get up and walk back and forth a bit, do some stretching.
Airline pillows are useless. Bring a neck pillow. For more than the past 20 years I've carried a black t-shirt to cover my head and eyes to sleep. I've had $40 deluxe sleep masks - same light cracks as the freebies - useless. Do I look silly with a t-shirt over my head? I have no idea, I'm deep in my dreams. (A buff? Buffs are great but I don't find them comfortable over my head or light proof and my buff is black. Are you going to be in an open vehicle, scooter, two wheels? Don't wear a scarf, wear a buff. Google Isadora Duncan Death. )
Noise cancelling is essential. They take that engine sound right down, significantly lowers my stress level. I used to take the big headphones because they were the only noise cancelling ones. Now I just use my Apple Airpods - I can sleep on them. Neck pillow donut. Works for me. The key is to find out what works. A floppy neck never works, nor does the airline pillow. Bring a clip of some kind so in a pinch you can wrap the blanket around your neck and clip it.
Jet lag. Airlines and crew don't turn the lights on and off to acclimate the passengers for the destination. China to US flight: at 9am California time they blacked out the entire cabin everyone went to sleep. I stayed up, window shade open a wee bit, headlamp on. The week after touch down, you could've called anyone else on that flight at 3 am and they'd have been wide awake. Not me.
Always acclimate to your destination as soon as you can. Day before? Great if you can.The one hour per day shift might be great. I've never been able to do it. Best seems to be staying awake for as many hours as it takes to go to bed or get up at your destination. I once flew from Japan back to the States after two months. I stayed up, after like 20 hours I went to bed at 10 pm at home in Los Angeles, woke up the next day 5 am was on time at my teaching job. No jet lag. (What did you do for your summer? "Yesterday, I was in Japan." ) The stay awake until you collapse in your new bedtime works best, or try to sleep on a plane that lands at 9am; but it hasn't always worked. Avoid taking a nap, especially if nothing is going to wake you up in 45 minutes or less. I've found that either I beat jet lag or it lingers and interferes for a week. One very difficult flight home from Guangzhou to LAX: I was in the GZ airport for about 10 hours during my LA sleep hours -- nothing but slippery plastic chairs (and McDonalds.) Nevertheless I stayed awake on the plane during California daylight hours. I think I was mostly awake for 30 hours that time.
One great stay awake activity is to go through your log or journal and make sure the dates and places are clearly marked. I've kept logs and journals for years, nevertheless I'll write dates and locations that make absolutely no sense. (I still can't figure out how I can get dates out of order.) Sorting this out on the flight home to stay awake helps. (A great travel writer once said, 'We don't travel to go someplace, we travel to fill our memories and fuel our dreams.' If you can't find who wrote this credit me.) By logging dates, locations, where you stayed (camped, dirtbagged) you can reconstruct the whole trip. Eventually you will have deeper fuller memories. As an old guy now, this is wonderful, almost as good as money.
I like melatonin. (knocks me out after about 90 minutes makes my dreams more vivid.) I always carry hand sanitizer, use body wipes. For those more stinky areas I put a little alcohol sanitizer on the body wipe. Works well. Ear popping I hold my nose and blow up my cheeks. You can gently blow on your baby's mouth and nose (ask your pediatrician) but you can never ever tell this to a parent who's child starts shrieking from ear pain after take off.

I use a white noise app and sound cancelling headphones along with a black out mask and warming Japanese eyemask with aroma therapy to sleep. Also, they make a strap that you can attach to your ear buds so you don't have to worry about losing them.

Sometimes my flight takes me 24 to 27 hours to get to the next destination. It is insane. A fanny pack is a must have. It is very convenient. Better yet, I bought a neck lanyard pouch. On these flights, you have to constantly take out your airline tickets and passport. Quite annoying. So i will use the neck lanyard pouch to place my plane tickets and passport in.

My favorite tip is to place all valuables before TSA into backpack into the bag. This works well for me.

  • @robbyrocksoo
    @robbyrocksoo Месяц назад

Great tips. I have been using a backpack for years, and keep any essentials and valuables in it. I put it under the seat in front of me, and keep a charged cordless razor in it to keep from getting stubble on long flights, and layovers. I wear shoes that slip off easy as my feet tend to get hot usually, but my feet don't stink, I am showered, and have fresh clothes. I also usually travel one airline that has screens built into the seat in front of you, so I bring folding, noise cancelling headphones. I also use a blow up neck pillow, as you can deflate it, and it takes very little room. Also, if I get the seats in front of the mid cabin bathroom, you can recline them and nobody behind you to complain, but you hear all the flushes. The backpack also leaves both hands free when walking through the airport, or at least one hand free if you have your checked luggage.

Air Fly is awesome, I've just had two 14 hour flights from UK to Thailand & it was brilliant. Ever getting up to wash room, no wires to deal with & the sound quality was just even better as I got Sony noise cancelling headphones with it.
One last tip, certainly on Emirates A380 anyway, choose extra legroom near exit. Only one next to the exit & window is extra legroom. So not only you have window seat, to go wash room you just walk forward

i just flew from mexico and made the mistake of eating an airport sandwich when i normally avoid bread, man did i get gassed up.
I only WISH i couldve farted, it was a short connecting flight so the seatbelt sign was on most of the time and being hunched over in that seat with belt on made it impossible to fart, i had to make an extra bathroom trip soon as i could just to fart. One good caveat is farts didnt stink at all, lol

I always take several plastic bags on my trip: a larger one for my backpack that goes under the seat in front of me in the event someone pees, barfs, or spills something on the floor in front and it seeps to the rear - not likely, but it has happened. Another reason is dirty shoes from the previous passenger, you don't know if they stepped in dirt, poo or grease/gum, so your under-the-seat stow-away is protected. I also carry a smaller plastic bag for rubbish collection. It's pretty inconvenient to stack everyone's drinks, cans, cups, plastic utensils and empty packages from a meal onto one tiny tray table if you're the person who needs to get out into the aisle to use the toilet; just throw the garbage bulk into the bag so the person you are stepping over can close their tray table.

Thank you for the tips. Here's a fun one, bring a little something for your flight crew. They work hard for you. Also, PLEASE shower and wear deodorant pre-flight. It never hurts to invest in a travel size bottle of Poopouri either! NO ONE wants to have to use bathrooms on planes, but it's even worse when you have to use it after someone has had a BM. As for Jet Lag..I've never had it. From PST, in Europe we were up at 5am, and would nap around 2-3pm for an hour or so and managed to make it work. And OH! Here's a good one! Get small bottles of Eucalyptus, Lavender and Orange Oil. Add a few drops of Eucalyptus to a hot cup of water in the airport or while in flight to relax and open sinuses (amongst many other benefits). Lavender can be blended into lotion to help you sleep or dot on upper lip. Orange Oil is energizing (needs to be blended), reduces stress and helps with upset stomach. Also, I wear a heavier sweater and knit scarf on the plane. I can always take them off but I'm happy to have them if it gets chilly. Also, a powerbank is a MUST! BTW..never walk around a plane without shoes on and for G*d's sake, NEVER go in the bathroom without them! Know that the water spigots on planes are never cleaned (NEVER!). Stick to bottled water and skip the coffee/tea. Finally, treat others as you'd like to be treated. Reclining your seat into someone's lap makes it difficult for them to be comfortable, makes it difficult for them to eat, and to use the restroom. A mild tilt, sure. But some people...sheesh! You're not in your favorite recliner in your living room! Be respectful to make the journey comfortable for ALL. Namaste.

I usually always pick aisle seat I prefer the peace in mind free to go to the toilet whenever I want. Once long flight didn’t come with free to select seat, so I didn’t pick for the first time. I end up in the middle, next to a guy who sat in the aisle seat when he boarded, and never stood up again, slept like a dead log throughout, I tried to gently pat him several times, no response, gradually increase the strength to a light slap kind of thing took minutes before he woke up. Gosh my bladder

I wear a long, oversized black cardigan that I travel with. Before I touch anything, I drape the cardi over the entire seat, including the headrest- I don't want my head/hair touching where someone else has been. I'm careful that it doesn't hang over the back of the seat- but the one I have fits perfectly covering the seat. If I get cold, I can wrap up in the cardi, because it's already all around me. And then I get out the plastic gloves and lysol/dettol wipes and wipe every surface - all sides of the tray table, remote - everything I would conceivably touch, and then take the plastic gloves off while holding the wipes, so the glove ends up inside out and the dirty wipe is on the inside. (Thank you, Naomi Campbell! ) I keep new, still packaged hotel slippers with rubber soles in my on-flight bag, and wear those while at my seat, and then toss them once we land.

The method to reset your circadian clock( sleep schedule) is to stay awake for more than24 hrs then sleep in dark and wake up to light(light on a timer will work). Have worked all shifts and workers who work swing shifts (change shifts every 4-6 weeks)do this to keep from getting killed falling asleep at dangerous jobs

Bring a bag of candy and give it to the crew when you board. They’ll take care of you. I’ve done this for years and they love it. I flew internationally near Valentines Day last year and brought candy and little sheet masks, and they gave me such good service as a result. The lead FA came to my seat and said “we’re going to take care of you!” and made sure I had plenty of water to drink and provided a hot meal.
