I remember going to a Valve night at the Mass in Brixton and at the end of the night if you stood next to the bass bins you slid forwards on all the beer and sweat on the floor when the bass hit. I remeber when i first entered the room it was like you were swimming in sound, completely overwhelming and the quality was amazing compared to other nights in the same venue. This sound system was the real deal, I've never experienced anything like it since.
This is always awesome to watch as much as it is nostalgic and also a bit sad and depressing. How things have changed so much. What we had vs what we have now…it’s just not the same and it never will be. Luckily we have a place like RUclips to bring us back in time
I saw Ed rush and optical doing classic mid to late 90’s set in Newcastle with the valve sound system !!!!! You could feel the bass in your guts ! I think I had tinnitus for about 4 days after it !!!!
Honestly some very very gifted musicians Lemon D and Dillinja. Love listening to their tracks on a good sound system. Wish they would start gigging with the valve sound system again. Great albums the killa hertz and big bad bass. I play tracks from these these pretty much every day in my ride. Nicely edited video in Tokyo and looks to be Amsterdam.
I remember big bad bass 2002... one of the best compilation of tracks ever. Those tracks had the flavour that caught my interest and hooked me into listening and enjoying drum n bass... the tracks nowadays don't have that same quality or they don't catch something that the old tracks used to. Good girl, live or die, ain't too loud! ❤
Both seem blazed tbh. But respect for this... & wish was a sequel. (+prequel ;-) Awe, 'Live or Die/South Manz'. Proper bitta wax, but gutted never went to that shop. Legendary store of soundS.🎶
12:48 - The infamous speech from Dillinja. It's weird, the period he's talking about (roughly 98-01) is considered somewhat of a golden age for drum and bass. Producers definitely had a techno influence, minimal structures, stripped back drums and clinical synth/basslines, but that didn't stop it being good. Tracks like The Nine, Wormhole by ER&O and all the tunes that came after are highly respected now. Ironically, the period where Dillinja is talking about things getting good again (03 onwards) is undoubtedly where fans thought Karl was at his worst and that era is now considered pretty embarrassing in many ways. Drum and bass has changed a lot over the years but from 93-98, Dillinja was really at the top of the pile, pretty much everything from Digital Cloning to Hard Noize is considered a classic, say what you want about his later stuff, but he will always be a king.
Thats because the foundation is '92 to '97, Hardcore/Jungle/Drum and Bass. That is the root sound which was always about making people dance. The groove of the beat and the bass was essential. And thats Dillinja's roots. '98 saw the introduction of the Technoey influence, which went into a harder darker sound, focusing on distorted ripping sounds and less on the dancing part. And it was intentional to put off a certain type of crowd because there was too much trouble at events. Drum and Bass after that became something else. Less about the rhythm and groove and more about the sound design. And for the people that followed that or came into it later, to them, the '98+ era will sound like their Golden Age. The root of their sound. Its almost like a different music, but its all under the umbrella of Drum and Bass. But we have a seen a return to the source these past couple years. It certainly got my attention !
@@stephengregory229 Exactly. this 12" was relatively overlooked as it was usually played on shitty systems of the time. This tune is indeed unreal at so many frequencies.
Heard the valve in Nottingham 2007 there's a cove at the back of Rock City in the main room the bass was insane the vibration through your body and how it slaps in something else. Best system I've ever heard live
Best bass I’ve ever heard was take me away on the valve. Decent tune but my god that sound system felt like it was punching me in the ribs when it dropped
What I find funny about this part @11:54 is D&B hasn't gotten out of this style for a while. Even in 2019, D&B is still stuck in this phase. The only difference now its more over produced.
Interesting to think these guys emphasising the need for bass in clubs helped pave the way for the dubstep deep bass dirty little stinker tunes in the early 00's
Capone - Black Wax EP !!!! 93 smashing the place up with jungletechno clish clash bang wallop grrrrrrrr boom boom shibazzz dum dum dum .... Wtf lmao ;)
Looking back, the amount of effort it took to get maybe like twenty people at first to actually spend some time and money listenng to these grimey breaks in a dinghy pub, the area mostly reserved for after dark buisness... It was tough work to get started. Almost thirty years later, it seems finally this is catching on! Big up to all the original junglists , been down with the hardcore sounds since Rebel MC resat his Atari
Lemon D & Dillinja in this era where just an important era to dnb & jungle, respect to the valve sound system, by any chance if anyone knows the song about 4:42, respect from Portugal 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
I have met, experienced and analysed many many SOUND ENGINEERS, some real article (ARTICAAL!) some fake ass (IMITATORS) and the evaluation I conclude is that qualifications have nothing much to do with how competent an engineer or technician is..what is required and important is a thorough knowledge of the SOUND AND GENRE as the combination of variables and levels in terms of frequencies and wavelengths must be enhanced accordingly and someone who isn't up 2 paar with such intelligent, complex and evolving sounds will not do justice to the set or the scene as a whole..I have seen ppl with many qualifications and this document and that course but someone who has been working in the industry for time and has the true interest, knowledge and experience WILL RUN RINGS ROUND THEM and the equipment they had to work with especially during early days puts them at a clear advantage coz they appreciate the technology
Some clubs and venues were absolutely fantastic in terms of the acoustic science such as Ministry of Sound and the Junction, UN and later the Temple was wicked too
Not gonna lie, I have mad respect for these guys studying the art of sound into this legendary soundsystem, anyone know what the song was at round about 4:40? Banging track

Lol, I have just seen myself at the killer hertz rave. I really needed to comb my hair back then (and now too for that matter)
