Extending a GRANDE GRACIAS to all who checked out this spotlight on THE SHINING 40 years later. I just finished DOCTOR SLEEP and will be doing producing a look at that sequel to the beloved original novel in the coming weeks! Stay tuned fright fans and remember: STAY SCARED!
The Shining is such a great book, I'd like to see another movie made that has the budget to really capture what makes it truly scary. Dr. Sleep is great as well. Oh, went to a thrift bookstore and bought 3 hardbacks from Mr. King. Your bookshelf has made me so jealous! LOL
I first read Shining when i was 15. I remembered the basics. Ghosts in hotel. He goes crazy and tries to kill his family. I'm 35 now and i read the book again, finished it 2 weeks ago. Now, i don't think the book it's about ghosts at Overlooked. It's the story of Jack Torrance and he's the main character of the story. It's a story about a man that fails on everything. He fails on - Being a teacher - Being a writer - Being an alcoholic - Being an alcoohol quitter - Being a husband - Being a father - Being the care taker of the hotel He fails till the end. He even fails at killing his family, i know how that sounds. He's the character that i felt so sorry bout. Danny was just annoying, Wendy was just the mother.
The reason for changing the room number from 217 to 237 is not important to any hidden meanings or themes of the film. They only changed it because the hotel where they were filming actually had a Room 217 and they thought it would be bad for business, so they asked Kubrick to change it.
The hotel Kubrick based The Overlook on had a real room 217 and were afraid people would refuse to stay in it so they asked him to change the room number to 237 which they didn't have.
Don't know if you know this already, but the reason the room number was changed from 217 to 237 was because the hotel where they filmed interior scenes actually had a room 217, and they thought it would be bad for business.
Gracias Shannon! I pushed to make this a weekly thing from hear on out and it will be from now on every Sunday evening. STOKED because I've barely scratched the surface. -FUEGO!
Same. All incarnations of the story are awesome. Have you ever read DOCTOR SLEEP? Just finished it and was quite impressed. GRANDE GRACIAS to ya for watching. -FUEGO!
I've only just finished reading the "Part 2" segment of the novel, and I could already tell why King hated Kubrick's film. Jack Torrance in the novel is much more "just a guy" who's made a few mistakes, including becoming an alcoholic and breaking Danny's arm while in a drunken rampage. He's also much more sympathetic because he decides to start sobering up because HE wanted to, after running over a bike in the road while drunk, and he freaks out because at first he thinks he hit a kid, but didn't, so he takes it as a sign to begin recovery.
I LOVE the mini series!!!! I HATE the SK adaptation. But I love the book and the Dr. Sleep book, haven't seen Dr. Sleep the movie yet, but Courtland Mead will ALWAYS be my Danny Torrance. …...That would make a great shirt......
If you haven't tried the mini-series Sir Pythoneus definitely give it a look. Obvious lessened budget but terrific performances with a script that more faithfully follows that fantastic book. Cheers as always brotha! -FUEGO!
Marcia and I both read it and discussed doing a review after covering the entire limited HULU series on my solo channel ENFUEGOTAINMENT but with SO MUCH new King content coming this year it's likely on the back burner. -FUEGO!
In the miniseries it's heartbreaking to see Jack go insane because you can see him struggling to keep it together for his family you believe he loves them In the Stanley Kubrick movie which I was never a fan of you don't get that Jack looked like he was always just barely willing to tolerate his family's existence. If the house driving him crazy wasn't the reason to kill his family Groundhog's Day just might have been
The 1997 Adaptation is the true classic we deserve not that carbage hogwash adaptation in 1980 that doesn't follow the book at all where as the 1997 atually follows the book

Its pretty good
Love the book, like the movie, don't care for the miniseries.
It's VERY obviously 'made-for-TV' but it has merits, at least for me. Gracias for tuning in.
Mini series has its plus points. Especially Rebecca demornays portrayal of Wendy Torrance.
100% this
In the miniseries it's heartbreaking to see Jack go insane because you can see him struggling to keep it together for his family you believe he loves them

Kubrick made it even better than the book
I've had this one for awhile never read it isn't really as scary as everyone says?
best scene in the film is the lloyd scene in the empty bar. better in the book
The 1997 Adaptation is the true classic we deserve not that carbage hogwash adaptation in 1980 that doesn't follow the book at all where as the 1997 atually follows the book
No
The SK adaptation is good even great HORROR movie, but as an adaptation of The Shinning, it SUCKS!!!!!
