I made a hammock with 4m of ripstop polyester and finished it with amsteel continuous loop sheet bends. I wanted nylon, but the polyester was cheap, and available fast (had to make it rapid for a camping trip on the weekend). I really want to make a nylon one now to see how they differ. Ripstop story: Had a small folding stool next to my woodstove to rest mine arse upon when making/tending the fire. One night I sat atop this little folder and the next thing I hear is RIP! And there was this moment of motionlessness, just like when Wile E. runs off the cliff, I hung there for a microsecond-full well knowing what had happened how Newton's laws would not be escaped (they are _laws_ ) Then slammed my arse right down onto the frame of that stool as well as the hardwood floor underneath Which was _not_ equipped with the Ripstop (but rather aged and faded cotton-Ripready?). So when I recover that stool, Ripstop will be the stuff! And I'll give all the credit to Shug. Whoo Buddy!

Yes!! This is very helpful! After my question to you a couple weeks ago, bought a hammock stand with 15’ span, a $20 mesh Guidsman hammock (no Eno’s anywhere in stock 😞) and a separate 360° net...stand’s great for trying at home with no trees, kept the net, hammock went back 😆 ! It was cooold! 🤣 Even with reflectix pad and my 950 down. Sun was still up but windy 30°s and no fly brrrr! But at least it came with ropes and ridge line so got a feel for setting up. Much easier and quicker than ⛺️ . Think I see another DIY in my future or at least patience to online order one and a tarp/rain fly! Maybe I’ll have it together by the time they decide to open trails/camping 🤔 Great video as always. Thanks!

I built a really fancy 12' hammock using the 1.7MTN XL hybrid to hold my fiance and I, and I have to say it's indeed amazing material and the easiest fabric to work with I've bought from them. It's very soft and cool, but just enough texture to grip you. Perfect imo. I also built a integrated dual-zip bugnet on it using the black monolite instead of noseeum mesh, and it's 1000x better despite the very minor weight penalty. The monolite is a bit firm, so it's a bit of a pain pinning your rolled hems on edges that were cut on an angle to the fabric grid, but it's not a big deal. Both of those fabrics are nice to work with, they're incredibly easy compared to sewing the UL taffeta or silnylon/silpoly fabrics. If buying a cheaper store bought hammock, make sure it's actually nylon. Some will say they're nylon, but actually a polyester. Polyester has very little stretch and makes for very uncomfortable hammocks to sleep in. Use those ones for drunken music festivals to abuse, but don't try to sleep in one lol
@@shugemery good video as always, I never sewn before and always used a bivy, but I recently watched your videos, a few DYI videos on here, and got a basic idea of what to do. I bought a sewing machine and went to town on some hammocks, building a initial prototype, then the final version and it came out very professional and rather unique. You mentioned you do more family stuff during the summers, so perhaps you'll be out there in the woods hanging more with the quarantine nonsense going on this year. If you were trying to get up to the phone line, you need to get your other end to the other end of the ladder. Thanks for the tech video. Things get so complicated. I like the old Sears choices. Do you want good, better, or best? I think I like the yellow one. I tried a bunch of hammocks and the most comfortable one so far is a square cotton job. You could start your own cottage industry renting the different hammocks for a week so people could try them all.

Just ordered material last week to build a hammock 1.9 ripstop and 1.0 hyper D dual layer. Made 12 foot hex tarp last month. I've been using a eno hammock that I've made a suspension for using 7 64 amsteele made two whopislings and a ajustable ridgeline. I've been enjoying making my own.
this is great. i just stumbled upon ripstop by the roll and as soon as I heard 2.2 hex i knew we had recently been the same place. I didnt know people use 2 different materials on top or bottom. good tip. I was gonna do my own ever since I saw that its just a lash at either end. I suppose I can sew up the edges so they look nice, but it is ripstop so... maybe just sharp scissors.
Among my many hammocks, I really love my Hummingbird Long hammock. I'm 260 lbs, 6'3", and have never worried a second about it breaking. You should try it, Shug. Have loved your videos for years. Thx so much
Hi John, Yes. I've added a ridgeline. Helps with the hang, and with the bugnet if you need to add one. BTW, make sure you get the Hummingbird Long which is 10.6 ft long. PS Hummingbird's bugnet doesn't fit this hammock

I'm not sure what kind of material to get. They have 1.7 MTN which is nylon d 66? hybrid ripstop nylon and Flecktarn 2.2 (camo) I'm not sure what it is specifically I currently like the feel and comfort of my 210T but i've read the 1.7 and 2.2 have quite a different feel? What are your thoughts? I weigh 250lbs

I have never tried a Grand Trunk. I think about any UQ will fit one though from what I hear. Just get one to the temp rating you want...20º, 0º whatever.
Hi, I just purchased 4 yards of 1.0 Hyper D from RSBTR and it feels like it is going to be VERY clammy as a hammock for summer camping. I know the fabric is touted as breathable, but it really looks like the old PU coated nylon before silnylon came out. Any suggestions other than 1.0 Monolite (from any sources, not just RSBTR) for a good breathable summer hammock? Thanks.

Now, since you’re addressing DIY, what about using those heavy duty catering tablecloths as a hammock? For those of us who hate hemming, it’s pretty tempting. They’re heavier, but are they safe?
I have made about 6 tableclth hammocks. No sewing required. Simply use cordage to whip the ends. I buy the table cloths from table cloth factory. The polyester tafetta. Pretty soft and plenty strong. I use 1 inch webbing for suspension.
Yeah, the Kammok Roos are incredible. In my experience through Dutchware/ENO/DreamHammok/Kammok, the Roo's fabric is actually the most comfortable. Shug is right, though. It doesn't stretch much, but unless you are a larger hanger, I never really liked a hammock to stretch. Definitely could recommend the Roo Double XL for you, Shug. HUGE hammock and they do that whole lifetime warranty thing. Cheers!

Mine are all nylon or ripstop. Nylon is softer than polyester but also stronger, while polyester is faster drying, easier to dye and abrasion resistant. Just ordered material last week to build a hammock 1.9 ripstop and 1.0 hyper D dual layer. Made 12 foot hex tarp last month. I've been using a eno hammock that I've made a suspension for using 7 64 amsteele made two whopislings and a ajustable ridgeline.
I've been enjoying making my own.
It is satisfying for sure....
this is great. i just stumbled upon ripstop by the roll and as soon as I heard 2.2 hex i knew we had recently been the same place. I didnt know people use 2 different materials on top or bottom. good tip. I was gonna do my own ever since I saw that its just a lash at either end. I suppose I can sew up the edges so they look nice, but it is ripstop so... maybe just sharp scissors.

Among my many hammocks, I really love my Hummingbird Long hammock. I'm 260 lbs, 6'3", and have never worried a second about it breaking. You should try it, Shug.

Hi John, Yes. I've added a ridgeline. Helps with the hang, and with the bugnet if you need to add one. BTW, make sure you get the Hummingbird Long which is 10.6 ft long. PS Hummingbird's bugnet doesn't fit this hammock
Ikea sells bugnet curtains that work well drapped on a ridgeline for me🦟🦟🕸🕸

Shug I just ordered my Blackbird XLC and I'm pumped! My concern is, I ordered the lightweight double 40d dream tek/15d inner. It seems like it might be a little dainty for a bigger hammocker. I believe you have a similar hammock in your inventory, how is the stretch?
I have a double but am not 100% certain what I got. I think you will be OK. Should hold about 350 pounds.

I'm looking at getting another one from Little Hammock Shop 11ft by 64". I'm not sure what kind of material to get. They have 1.7 MTN which is nylon d 66? hybrid ripstop nylon and Flecktarn 2.2 (camo) I'm not sure what it is specifically
I currently like the feel and comfort of my 210T but i've read the 1.7 and 2.2 have quite a different feel? What are your thoughts? I weigh 250lbs

Shug, I have a silnylon tarp. Should I fold it and put in the sack or just stuff it in. I've heard that folding it causes it to wear along the folded lines. What do you do?
I just cram mine in but mainly use snakeskins. Never was a folder.

I have never tried a Grand Trunk. I think about any UQ will fit one though from what I hear. Just get one to the temp rating you want...20º, 0º whatever.
Hi, I just purchased 4 yards of 1.0 Hyper D from RSBTR and it feels like it is going to be VERY clammy as a hammock for summer camping. I know the fabric is touted as breathable, but it really looks like the old PU coated nylon before silnylon came out. Any suggestions other than 1.0 Monolite (from any sources, not just RSBTR) for a good breathable summer hammock? Thanks.
Is it calendared? That does not breath as well. Maybe a non calendared ripstop.

My favorite fabric is the polyester Grand Trunk travel hammock. Too short, but very comfortable. Second is the polyester of the DD Hammock.

Now, since you’re addressing DIY, what about using those heavy duty catering tablecloths as a hammock? For those of us who hate hemming, it’s pretty tempting. They’re heavier, but are they safe?

I have made about 6 tableclth hammocks. No sewing required. Simply use cordage to whip the ends. I buy the table cloths from table cloth factory. The polyester tafetta. Pretty soft and plenty strong. I use 1 inch webbing for suspension.

Yeah, the Kammok Roos are incredible. In my experience through Dutchware/ENO/DreamHammok/Kammok, the Roo's fabric is actually the most comfortable. Shug is right, though. It doesn't stretch much, but unless you are a larger hanger, I never really liked a hammock to stretch.
Definitely could recommend the Roo Double XL for you, Shug. HUGE hammock and they do that whole lifetime warranty thing. Cheers!

Harbor freight sells 9'x12' painters drop cloths for 12 bucks that i love as a hammock, in winter, i put my flokati in it& snug as a bug in a rug. I dig natural fibers myself. Luv u Shuger, u rock shop! Im sorry i think i already told u about this canvas, al heimer

No, it need the mat for shape and structure. Carry a mat repair kit!

Tex: Tex is also metric system of numbering. It is a number which tells us the weight in grams for 1000 meter of yarn. So 210T polyester will mean 9000 meter of polyester will weigh 210 grams.

Mine are all nylon or ripstop.
Nylon is softer than polyester but also stronger, while polyester is faster drying, easier to dye and abrasion resistant. Neither is a better fabric, though each has uniquely superior attributes that lend themselves to certain uses.

I have a Hummingbird Single+, Kammock Roo Double, Kammock Mantis, first gen Bear Butt, and a few more. My Hummingbird is rated to 350#. Stretch goes from least being the Hummingbird to the Bear Butt and my Kammock gear having the most
