I made zippered packing cubes out of rip-stop fabric like you got. They make great gifts for people who travel. The ripstop also makes great purse/bag linings because it is light, but sturdy, and it water resistant.

I typically love shopping on FWD and will still order fabric from them, but this is the reason why I don’t buy mystery boxes! The couple of times that I’ve tried it (and I really mean a couple of times!) I ended up with fabric I didn’t like and would have to give it away.😢. I love the faces that you made, 😂😂😂 and you being so very candid with us! ❤

Your face cracked me up and this video was fun to watch. Bagmaker/designer here. What you call ripstop we call wpc - waterproof (water resistant) canvas. Mostly used on the inside of bags instead of cotton because you don't have to interface it. If you need to iron it, only iron the fabric side. If you iron on the smooth side, it will stick to your iron. Maybe try a simple tote pattern with red on the outside and yellow on the inside.

You are wonderful! I’m too picky to be brave enough to order a mystery box but I’m howling over your reaction to brown broadcloth because that is legit the only thing you got I could have used in the last six months. I appreciate your candor. ❤️

I’m sorry about your fabric. purchased 4 yards of a poly wool for my ME2001 coat from FWD, and lost a full yard because of a hole. I contacted them right away and they immediately sent me another yard and a half of the fabric. I would definitely contact them and express my disappointment.

Especially with lining, I often pick up 1 yard remnants. Sleeves often get different color or even different fabrics.
I've used ripstop as a backing to denim/ scrap quilts I use for picnics or outdoor events.
I use things like that brown as Inter linings as well as muslins
Also, the brocade as a corset...excellent

Raven. Don't give up. You have some pretty interesting pieces. Blazer suits with pants are really popular and I can see a couple of your pieces as suits- especially the yellow animal print and the satins. Girrrl, do your thing! ☺️

For a quick estimate of yardage; hold one corner of the fabric in your hand and bring it up to your nose. That’s about a yard/meter. You can measure the distance yourself for more accuracy.

As an amateur bag maker, several fabrics gave off that vibe (don't wash the waxed canvas, please!).
I believe the hole in the blue fabric was what they pull to test GSM (grams per square meter) to give the fabric weight.
Seems based on so many fabrics being less than 2yards, these are just end of bolt pieces. I'll just keep checking my local Walmart for the offcuts they sell!
Love your videos. You are such a real, precious human. ❤

Mystery is getting more fabric to investigate new projects. As you increase your sewing skills you may not be so open to get whatever they send you and you may plan specific projects with specific materials.

The area of fabric cut from a circle cutter is 0.01 m², so if we weigh it in grams, we calculate the fabric weight by:

I would have been thrilled to get this box. A friend told me of a couple of places to try their mystery boxes. I cried with the one. It was very small, maybe 2” squares if that. All different kinds of fabric. It looked more like a box of scraps. I said I would use it for stuffing bears I’m making. The second box I got was a little better but again I was so disappointed. What whole pieces that was in the box had tape, glue, or markings on them. I said then I would never try anymore mystery boxes. I loved that color lavender and blue ones. One sewer's trash... I LOVE BROWN; my mother was a very overbearing, hateful bully; one day when I was about 12 she asked me my favorite colors, I replied bright bright pink, electric blue & rich dark dirt brown. She was so mad at me, I was punished for weeks for that 'wrong' answer! I still stand by my colors, still my faves.
She redid my room every few years, always HER fugly colors, no input from or asking me: pale lavender sheer curtains and paint; yellows everywhere; then golds all over; finally (after some creepy guy was caught peeking in my windows early mornings for months), I got DARK green walls, very very thick and heavy curtains that were dark green like ivy with black and wild ugly green colors, and heavy thick furniture - ick!
I did learn from her though; although I did not let my children run my home, I've ALWAYS let them have opinions and input for decorating not just their rooms, but even the rest of our home - let them have voices!! Now when I'm decorating our fixing something, or making something by sewing or crochet, I nearly always ask my Darling Granddaughter Sierra, who has the keenest and most innovative eyes and opinions. So see how sometimes bad things can be made into good ones?

Also the broadcloth could be use for pants/skirt and would look amazing with a satin top maybe like a Champaign color GiRL! And for the whole in the blue fabric, on the bright side they could have just sent you the 2 yards without the hole but they didn't cut it off and now you have a little room to play with

Look up burn testing fabric to help with fabric content. Ripstop is nor totally waterproof but water repellent. Don’t think I would ever buy a mystery box since I never use polyester fabric because it doesn’t breathe and burns me up use odd fabrics for bags and storage units.
A good drawstring for hoods are longer shoelaces and they come in so many fun colors plus they are cheap.

OMG...that box..lol. Personally I would have like a better variety and some longer cuts. They could have thrown in some nice in season fabric like a french terry, cotton eyelet, challis ....I digress. However, the ripstop could be used for croasbody bags or bucket hats? As for that brown, definetely muslin, but they could be cute cargo pants , a musim for M8358 since it takes so much fabric, OR you can manipulate it into a textured fabric or embroider it. I have yet to order any mystery box cause I buy fabric faster than it's sewn, but it's exciting not knowing what you'll get.😊😊

  • @HRHDMKYT
    @HRHDMKYT 6 месяцев назад

I would only ever buy a fabric mystery box of 100% cotton [good quality/designer] quilting fabric. Because even if it’s “ugly”, if you cut it down small enough, you can successfully use it in a scrap quilt with other pretty fabrics. It’s all about the colour when it comes to scrap quilts. So when ordering if you could specify a colour grouping (pastels, or rainbow 🌈 brights, or autumn colours, or “neutrals”), even better.

You were respectful but honest. Personally, I like FWD for solid, basic materials. The majority of their prints are not for me. The prints that I have been interested in are sold out. It's not beneficial for me to do mystery boxes.

They need to give you another piece to replace the blue with the hole, how did that get inside a box? I’m sure you will make it all work somehow.

@@RavenMaureen I went to Michael's over the weekend and saw that they had easy to clean mats to put down under art stations for kids. It made me think of the rip-stop water-resistant fabric you had in your video.
