Well, welcome to the big ships printing world. Even using nanites it's not an easy job at all, but you doing really well. The only advice I can give you is to try IIM to suffer managing your containers a bit less :)
Yep, you need at least one interconnected block to start printing. The only blocks that work like that and do not require to be ground at the end are merge blocks.
Oh, you should avoid using the sun-tracking panels approach in space. This movement that it causes can move your ship in an unpredictable manner and cause a crash with an asteroid or so.

I personally found it much simpler to configure projectors using build info mod. You should try it yourself :)
