Crafting a bed on your first day basically requires a nearby village or brick house Roguelike Dungeon entrance (those have a bed on the second floor, as well as a chest with some random loot), otherwise the amount of logs and wool you require to craft one is difficult to manage in so short a time with no tools to start with.
Don't forget about cooking and eating a wide variety of food to gain more hearts! A Healing Axe will keep you going, but a varied diet will keep you *alive*. Especially in the Nether early on, when OP armor/weapons are scarce and options for quick healing even more so. And you have to visit the Nether to complete the Healing Axe quest for the Nether Gardens, might I add.
Remember that GTNH is on version 1.7, so natural health regen is really slow. Laudanum's 10 seconds of Regen III is useful for backing off and getting back some health quickly, at the cost of being useless for those 10 seconds. Not something I would recommend relying on if you're taking on a Roguelike Dungeon, or in general for that matter. But it's something to use if you're desperate.
...Three. There was a bed *right there*. And carpets to craft more of them if you wanted. I'm just saying.
The best early early game foods are the berry types that go into making Berry Medley (Rasp-, Blue-, Black-, Staw-, Cran- and Maloberry), Cantaloupes, and the foods that can be directly smelted into (very slightly) better food, namely Asparagus, Sweet Potato, Tea Leaf, Corn, Eggplant, Grapes and Rice (also Coconuts if you happen to have that fruit tree nearby). Anything you can juice is also good to plant, *especially* if you're near a snowy biome for snowballs. Though do beware Dire Wolves, if you are.
Basic Stone Age lootbags, and to a lesser extent Steam Age lootbags, often give you food. There's no real point to saving them, so open them up and enjoy the free food.
The What's That...? quest isn't necessary until you're ready to go to the Twilight Forest, so it can be ignored until then.
It's worth it to study the different types of Special Mobs in this pack, as some of them have qualities that can make them go from "easy victory" to "certain death". Tough Spiders, in particular, are as their names suggest. Don't bother trying to engage with early game melee weapons, just run away.
Something to keep in mind RE: Biome humidity is that outside of how much water a Railcraft Water Tank will produce it also determines whether a biome gets visible rainfall, and whether GT machines will catch fire and explode when left exposed to the rain. Yes, those are two separate things. IIRC Humidity of

To anyone wanting to play this pack after seeing this:
Do realise, Threefold spent 74 ingame days. That is roughly 12 hours of gameplay, what you see here is condensed into 20 times as small a timeframe.

I think the place you start your base is indeed very important
After all you're going to spend countless hours there
In my AOF6 playthrough (not recommendable, heavier than most forge modpacks) I found this beautiful ''island'' that was separated by a Minecraft circular river (never seen one) with a width of approximately 15 blocks (insanely large river) and to put a cherry on top there as a village northeast on the island that connected the separated landmass to the main continent, the river would end in an ocean like a real Delta
I'm currently in love with this island because it is big enough to host all my planned infrastructure and at the same time has only 9y levels of variation, which means instead of completely terraforming, I'll find suitable areas and terraform only one or two blocks to make plains among the level variations, and add a walking path to the entire island connecting each of those terraformed areas with buildings (some more horizontal, some overly vertical) containing sections or fulfilling purposes
    Im deeply inspired

Really neat to see this now, having very recently just started a playthrough and almost gotten to LV now. I was introduced to the pack by "Neurotic Goose" on RUclips doing a void start playthrough which is insane. I'm just in a normal world tho, and almost all of these tips are still fantastic for starting off! Seems like some of the quests have been fine tuned now, in particular the tinker's construct starting one has a secondary version for if you want to take from villages but gives fewer quest rewards, while still allowing progression.
I haven't quite reached LV because I decided to move my base before things got even more complicated, thankfully I had made my start by a river with 90% humidity but I'm moving to a magical grove which happens to have 100% anyways. Made a few filing cabinets and will have to get started on moving stuff over. I also lucked out with the huge variety of fruit in the rainforest I spawned in, so the first few hearts came easy and I've played a pack with the diminishing returns on the same types of foods before so I was already familiar with little tricks like juicing some of the fruit or adding a snowball to make a smoothie to keep things fresh. I ended up going for the windmill route for starting processing, and found a cauldron (or got it from a lootbag, idr) so sandwiches quickly became overpowered since I could make like 3 or 4 types and keep them on rotation with some berries mixed along with new foods. This factory modpack actually has me hyped to build a fancy kitchen in my new base 😅🤔😋

It’s funny your S1 play through of GTNH was one of the most enjoyable modded Minecraft series I’ve watched in a long time. I tried to play GTNH myself and hated it 😂. I’m looking forward to playing vicariously through you again!

Nice, I really want to see how far you get this time.
I myself really do enjoy playing this pack, oddly.
I dislike grinding usually, though with this you just pick a goal for the day; lets say "i want coke ovens" and you just do that.
It makes this pack rather playable

    I swear to God.
I wanted to know what this modpack was about because everyone waved it around as "the modpack that lasts you a lifetime".
Im not a fast player and I believe 1.7.10 is the golden era of mods so I ended up here and eventually ended up starting my own run.
And oh boy, is it ever the ultimate stress test.
Rewatching this after I learned the ropes and how GTNH generally operates makes this run so very much more impressive.
I can see how this will keep you around for years on end. I will cuss it out at every corner but after the steam age, every single achievement feels like such a big advancement to me. Especially if I get to wrap my head around a new mechanic in the process.
I just got my first derpy EBF to run and it didnt explode or set anything on fire and I feel like I reinvented the wheel.
I guess what I want to say is, uh.. thank you from the bottom of my heart for this beginners guide for lost souls.
Im gonna rewatch it and this time I'll be able to appreciate all the time and energy you put into it.
