  • www.moregems.com/worlds-large... -- Steve Moriarty & Chris Clemens, the president of the Midwest Chapter of the Fluorescent Mineral Society, discuss the characteristics of Hyalite opal from Zacatecas Mexico. This extraordinary gemstone not only fluoresces under ultraviolet light, but under natural sunlight as well! Watch as Steve Moriarty precision facets this rare gemstone into a 7.27 carat gem.
    Also available to see in person at Moriarty's Gem Art Store at 126 South Main Street, Crown Point, Indiana. We're located in the hub of Northwest Indiana on the downtown Square.

    Very interesting that you can tell the drop in uv as daylight becomes more oblique in the winter, thus filtering out more uv & sending less uv per area of earth's surface. I think it would be cool to see how it changes with latitude too- what does it look like under midsummer daylight in alaska vs hudson bay vs midwest vs tropics. Or the UK vs the US since much of northern europe is higher latitude than the CONUS

    I have a Yellow Hyalite Opal that is rather large as well. I inherited it from my Grandparents who are Hungarian. It measures 16mm x 14mm. It appears to be a cushion cut. I had no idea what it was at first. I noticed that in the daylight it had green color change but indeed it was flourescence. Under the UV light it is a bold neon green. It is set in a 12 prong 14K Yellow gold ring setting. Do you think I should get it appraised? I am just tickled green about this stone. I have never weighed it but I estimate that it is about five to six carats.

      Is it safe to wear fluorescent jewelry & how safe is it for you to handle the minerals with your bare hands, Steve?

    • @Moregems
      @Moregems  6 лет назад

      Yes, according to Gem-A (The gemological association of Great Britain), this particular material from Zacatecas, Mexico is safe to handle, cut, and wear. They have done an extensive article on it in the past. There are only trace elements of Uranium within this material which only makes the radiation of the gem slightly above background levels. While the levels may vary slightly in from gem to gem, it probably isn't anything to worry about, but it's a good idea to be conscious that it's still emitting a very slight amount of radiation. Not all fluorescent minerals are radioactive, there are other elements that cause fluorescence as well.

    Steve your quite a amazing gem cutter. You always seem to get a lot of carats per stone with minimal wastage. When I cut there always seems to a lot of loss.

    Thank you! I found one naturally polished by San Diego desert sands and could not determine what stone it was. The green glow is what stumped most of the rock hounds around here. Odd, seems like that is a giveaway but I live in a private area that people don’t have access to no geology studies have been conducted. I’ve found many many gems here.

      Are you in San Benito County. Benitoite will fluoresce a strong chalky blue under shortwave U V. Hardness and specific gravity will be diagnostic. If you have gems in your area you will likely have a rock club which could help.

    • @420FlowerPower
      @420FlowerPower 5 лет назад

      MoreGems.com I’m on the edge of San Diego and imperial county. There is hyalite opal here. Maybe brought up from Mexico and dumped at the abandoned rock shop next door to me. I haven’t found it anywhere but nearby that parcel. There is a lot of bubbly chalcedony or fire opal. I only have one piece that fluoresces green in daylight I need to buy the UV flashlight though. I have many other gems though garnets, beryl, spinel, aquamarine etc a lot of which I find all over. I’m really searching for that tourmaline though.

      This is very minor radioactivity, compared to uranium glass that can be found in antique stores. Anything that glows under under a black light is somewhat radioactive. Even smoke detectors have small amounts of uranium in the smoke detector. This is a very safe gemstone to have.
