Chocolate Peak: Stunning Sierra Winter Hike

  • Winter hiking is here and that means the Eastern Sierra is popping off with some of the most beautiful winter hikes we have ever seen! We took advantage of one of the last hiking days in December before a massive snow storm rolled in, and headed to the Bishop Pass / South Lake Trailhead for a hike up to the Chocolate Lakes. From there, we ventured off trail for a scramble up to Chocolate Peak. Let's just say those views from the top overlooking all of the Eastern Sierra may be some of our favorite summit views yet!

    A few months ago, my wife and I had the honor to hike The Highline Trail to Grinnell Glacier Overlook in Glacier Nat. Park. As you know she has gained weight over the years of being a stay at home Mother of five. She hadn't done a major hike in years. We worked so hard to be able to do Highline. She had so many doubts that she could do it. Along the hike, she developed some major blisters and questioned turning back, but she has a strong will and kept going. She is amazing. Elise, you are truly someone she admires with your ability to almost anything. I posted our journey yesterday. It would be an honor for you to check it out. I was so proud of her. Thanks. Have an amazing New Year.

      That is so incredible! And please do tell your wife how proud I am of her. I came from a similar place of really not being able to barely hike or run, but with enough persistence and dedication I learned you can really accomplish whatever physical challenge you set out for yourself. Big hugs and happy new year!

    ELISE and ADAM a hello from France. Last video of the year that definitely plunges 2023 into the past. The colours of this winter landscape slowly fade to almost black and white, and even the grass takes on the chocolate hue, but it blends with that of the peak you climbed in good spirits. The rivers and lakes are asleep under the ice, just waiting for your next videos to burst out again. In 2023 I followed all your adventures, they made me dream, and like you I am looking forward to 2024. Happy New Year, kisses to both of you. DAN.
    ELISE et ADAM un bonjour de France. Dernière vidéo de l’année qui plonge définitivement 2023 dans le passé. Les couleurs de ce paysage hivernal s’estompent doucement pour finir presque en noir et blanc, et même l’herbe se pare de la teinte chocolatée, mais elle se marie avec celle du pic que vous avez gravi dans la bonne humeur. Les rivières et les lacs sont endormis sous la glace, ils n’attendent que vos prochaines vidéos pour jaillir de nouveau. En 2023 j’ai suivi toutes vos aventures, elles m’ont fait rêver, et comme vous j’attends 2024 avec impatience. Très bonne année, bises à vous deux. DAN.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  5 месяцев назад

      Thanks Christine, and that's a good question. It was a pretty cold day, never even getting over about 50 degrees, but it felt super hot when we were climbing in the sun and out of the wind and then we would de-layer in order not to get our base layer too sweaty. Of course then we'd get in a shady windy spot 2 minutes later and need to put our jackets back on, so it was a lot of layering and de-layering! ❤️

    Funny I sat down with a Ghirardelli square as I started to watch this! The same 86%😊❤ I have to say I got a bit nervous on the ice walks. How do you REALLY know its safe unless its under 32 degrees?

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks Kari, and that's a great question. Earlier in the season it's honestly really hard to know when it's safe, but this time it was easy because in some places we could see down through the ice and see that it was more than a foot thick. But in November it's less thick, so we're a lot less likely to go out and play on it. I might step out just to feel it out, but I def have Elise waiting on shore with our 30 foot rope just in case! ❤️ --A

      Thank you so much! We definitely prepare as much as one can out there and always have emergency communication devices, extra layers/gear/food/water and first aid, and check the weather often, especially right before we go. Sometimes you will get a random bit of service out there to check weather updates but we don't rely on that. At the end of the day you do as much as you can to prepare and some things are inevitably out of your control.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  6 месяцев назад

      That is a great question. It is not a particularly difficult trail, but with a lot of snow it will for sure be a lot harder if you're post-holing through it for several miles. As for the peak, yes that would definitely be more dangerous in the snow because you wouldn't be able to see what was underneath where you were stepping in those jagged rock areas. Still though, it could probably be done with the right snowshoes! ❤️
