I'd like to see these tested after 6 months to a year of use. The Berkeys claims don't make sense and this test only shows us what it can do brand new. I'm willing to bet even a month or 2 of use will significantly drop the results.

I am very curious about what the test result would be a week before the filters should be replaced, and possibly also weeks or months after they should have been replaced. I am very curious about the real life of the filters to make sure that after months of use I still drink safe water.
@@narlycharley I believe I read somewhere, after I posted this, that the carbon filter alone does remove some of the fluoride. But if removing 99% of it is what you require, then the white filter would be desired.
Absolutely love my Berkey filter. I don’t have much space so I McGivered the components with a cheese ball plastic bin for the top and a Walmart iced tea dispenser for the bottom. I use one Berkey filter in it. Still going strong after two years, filtering about 1 Gallon per day. Go Berkey!
Berkey doesn’t have a single NSF clearance to validate their claims about what they filter out. They now have lawsuits pending because it was proven their filters didn’t come close to their claims. Please look it up before spending your hard earned money.
I've had a Berkey for 7 years. My water always tasted soft. Not to say it wasn't clean water, but it did not compare to Essentia (gold standard in my book).

Thanks for investing your personal time to present your observations, anaylsis results and recommendations. NOTE: The numerical difference of 2 (91 vs. 93) doesn't mean too much for a sample size of just one or even two. Berkey could truly be a better filter or AquaTru could or there may not be a signficant difference. If I was commisioned to the task of testing the hypothesis "Berkey is better" or "Aquatrue is better", then I would access whatever raw data was available on both systems regarding "percent purified" (90, 91, 92, 93, ...) in order to calculate the appropriate sample size, (10, 20, 100, 500, ...etc) and how much of a "difference" would we want to detect as being "significant" (1, 2, 5, 10, ...). Further to that, I would have to conduct such tests "within" various types of water, (tap water by region, well water by type of well, ... etc.). It's possible that one might find Berkey to be better for tap water and on the other hand, AquaTru to be better for well water. With all that, you can see a lot of money would be required to conduct "proper statistical" tests that could generate results where it could be said, "There is sufficient statistical eveidence to infer that ..." Well, who is really prepared to spend such money? No one or no company that I know. So, as consumers, perhaps we need to rely on all the feedback from as many consumers we can hear from or ... whatever.
Here's your introduction, the Berky is a scam. They use and sell extruded carbon sticks for 100s of dollars which you can buy for super cheap. They aren't NSF certified where as AquaTru is. AquaTru is a RO system shrunk down to fit on a countertop. RO is a proven water filtration system that works very well at removing A LOT of contamination from water. This is coming from a guy who doesn't own an AquaTru but I do have a Berky.

I wish someone would test a Berkey that's been used for a few months. Those are the real results. Testing it brand new can be deceptive since carbon doesn't work for very long.
@@whatever833 Berkey has a red dye that comes with it, so you can test to see what is getting through as needed. I have had mine for several years and love it. They say it is good for something like 6K gallons or something, these filters last YEARS.
@@StacyForest738 the dye test is even less accurate than TDS tests which are horrible ways to measure water quality. Whenever you see a company endorsing these gimmick tests that should be a red flag. These companies know that the average consumer knows nothing about water quality and testing so it helps them get away with selling products that do the bare minimum. Think about it, dye is a visual test not chemical test. I could actually poison your water and it would have no color or taste affect on the water but that doesn't make it safe. Same with TDS meters since they can be cheated by using media that strips the ions out of the water which is what Zero Water does. I spent a lot of time doing research on this for a college course and the more I looked the more I found that people were paying for products that don't accurately do most of the things they think they do. Awesome. Thanks. I found berkey filters get moldy over time. This is a common problem over time and many customers report it. In the upper chamber the atmosphere is allways warm and moist. So best environment for mold growth. Maybe it doesnt matter because it gets "filtered out" but im not sure.
I can only imagine. What any product filters out will of course vary within acres, and or depths of wells, or how old your town's plumbing pipes are, and whether your town/city merges with other counties before getting to the treatment plants, etc. And how old are they? Are they modern? Do they use the Zenon filters or better ...Or, well, how often one cleans their filters is a consideration too, to be fair. Yep, they'll get moldy.
I clean our berkey filters every 2 weeks & use a light scouring sponge (reserved only for the Berkey & it is sanitized after each use). We've had our berkey for years & never had a problem w/ mold even in warmer months, including a month long camping exersion in the middle of summer. It wasn't cleaned that whole time & we used lake & stream water! We filtered out the large stuff w/ a towel over a 5 gallon bucket then boiledit then put through the Berkey. No one got sick it worked great! Definitely worth the investment & pays for itself in the first few months of not buying bottled water or getting 5 gallon buckets filled at the store or delivered. Sorry got a little carried away there but we love our berkey lol
Of course your Berkey filter will work good when it's only one month old, you need to test it when it is 3 or 4 years old. That's something I would like to see.
This issue is being brought up increasingly. Berkey claims effective filtration for thousands of gallons per element, but no verification of water quality has been performed to my knowledge to verify these claims. In one study, the performance fell off dramatically after just two hundred gallons.
Typically filters last for a period of time or if under that time gallons filtered, plus it depends on the water you use, says so when you read up on the website just like every other water filter out there. I’m amazed at how stupid so many people are just because some guy is trying to get clicks claiming berkey is lying. I don’t even personally use a berkey but know a bunch who have for years and never had an issue so I’ve got one as a backup never opened in case we ever needed it during a storm etc… Water filters are all very similar, as long as you’re not going with the cheapest crap you’re prob fine, I got the berkey bc of the people I know who’ve used them for years.
@@johndavidtackett It is hard to say that folks aren't having problems with their water from a Berkey or any other filtration system. Contaminants in water at the typically low concentrations in most people's tap water affect health over a long period of time. The problem with Berkey (and others) is they claim filtration for approx. 6000 gallons but their lab results only analyze over the course of 1-200 gallons of influent water passing through the filter. NSF certification requires that they test through a minimum of the expected filter life capacity. Many of these companies claim these certifications or use wording that makes it sound as if they do
I am currently looking into an AquaTru. I previously bought the Berkey at the suggestion of my doctor, but, even though the red dye test worked beautifully on the Berkey, when I filtered water it went in clear, but came out milky - I mean MILKY. I ran 4 full cycles thru. I re-primed the filters, did the red dye test again at the suggestion of there customer service with the same results. As well there was a white almost powdery substance in the bottom tank after each run. Very odd. Berkey blamed it on my water source. They say that once in a while they get this unexplainable problem and it is because of something in my water. I am on city water, not well water. I returned the Berkey. Hoping better with the AquaTru.
There’s actually a third party test out now on Berky and the advertised claims Berky makes are way less than the reported results. I’m glad I realized before I purchased but sad cause I did like the Berky design
Had this issue as well. It was due to having the white fluoride filters and not flushing them well enough when priming. After i flushed them with running water for longer it went away.
I wish that had been my problem, but I did not have the fluoride filters. I really wanted to like the Berkey, it looks so sleek. Thanks for your solution - hope that helps some people.
If you purchased the Flouride filters (white in colour, go underneath the black filters), this will happen if you incorrectly install them and crack the casing (on the inside). The powdery substance is from inside those filters, and you _must_ prime them properly first as well. But, if you screw them in without the plastic wingnut in place first, the threading ends up being too long and cracks the internal casing of the flouride filter, resulting in the white powder leaking into your filtered water supply.

Was the AquaTru water hardness lower than the Berkey? I noticed you said the water hardness of the Berkey was "better" than the AquaTru sample, so, since the AquaTru is RO filtration and the Berkey will do almost nothing to lower hardness, I'm guess that hard water is "better" than, er, not-hard water? Or is the AquaTru adding "hardness" with the final "filter." I'm so confused~ Edit: Thanks so much for the comparison. The results were surprising and fascinating.

They said that after 1100 gallons the Berkey filter starts to let other contaminants through which is why they don’t want to have it pass the NSF test on their website. Research for yourself.
I'm reading that Berkey fluoride removal filters use aluminum, which would explain the claims by some that the aluminum level in the filtered water actually increased.
Ok so it filters out the bad, but does it leave minerals in the water? I drink anywhere from 32-48oz of water a day so I bought the small Berkey set up and YES the water tastes great, but lately I'm developing calf cramps I have never had prior to drinking Berkey filtered water. This started about 3-4 weeks after putting the filter in service. Thanks!
Berkey is just simple carbon it doesn't filter out minerals. Best to test your water and the water coming out of your Berkey to be safe. It could be contaminated.
As I understand, it does not remove the minerals. However, @rolandvs7table, drinking too much water in a short amount of time, or per day, can deplete your body of things like potassium. The lack of potassium can cause muscle cramps and charlie horses.

I’ve had my berkey for a few years and it makes me sick, so I just bought aquaTru and I’m able to drink it without feeling sick. These two systems are great for people with mast cell activation syndrome “mcas”

Are the fluoride filters on top of the black filters NEEDED for the Berkey? I live in LA where fluoride is added to the water. Are you black filters good enough to filter that out or would I need an extra filter? Thanks!
What I've read elsewhere is you only need those after about 1000 gallons have been filtered with the regular filters. They then start not filtering the fluoride out as well. That's when you can add the extra filters.
i was curious about this too, if you go to the berkey website you can go into their lab test sheets. you'll see that the black filters get most of the fluoride out i believe around 80%, but the white extra filters get 99.75% out. I might be a bit off on the numbers but that's what i remember.

Update... A friend has been using a Berkey for some time now and has discovered that silver coins can mitigate the coliform in the water. I put 3 silver half dollars in the top and the bottom tanks.
Which Aquatrue device is best to use? I saw one type had a holding tank which was advised against in one of your podcasts. The units with the holding pitchers don't look big enough for bigger families. Also what is the best way to mineralize the water?

I've had my Berkey for almost a year and its the best water I've tasted so far but I don't want to be naive thinking they won't cook the books. So I bought the Pro one G2.0 filters to see how that goes. They have the NSF rating and need changed every six months. Purifying our own water is going to become a hot topic soon.
I've heard goods things about the Aqua Tru but I hate that it requires electricity. Im looking for a power-free option to use in a disaster or power outage when municipal water supply might become contaminated or the treatment plant is down. So the aqua tru is really not an option.
Can either of these filter out estrogen compounds? I understand that municipal water supplies using treated sewage are contaminated with estrogen as it is excreted in one's urine...
What I have done to avoid the contamination problem with the Berkey is I put a small amount of Clorox in my upper reservoir every time I fill it. by the time it filters out, problem solved. Been doing that for years
I saw a video showing that the aluminum levels were elevated by the fluoride filter, which uses aluminum to remove the fluoride. I've never heard of any filter adding lead to the water.

Ya might want to ask the folks at AquaTru. This video leaves out so many aspects of water filtration and purification that I would need to see proof of their Doctorate degrees and in which fields of study. A PhD in English literature is a doctor.
I'm looking into a water filtration system so these vids are very informative to me. Something I have never heard addressed is any system's effectiveness with sea water. The reason I'm asking is that I live on the Oregon coast and we are being inundated with disaster preparedness for the Cascadia Subduction Zone mega quake and the ensuing tsunami. Assuming we survive the quake and are not swept to sea with the receding ocean, and my water filtration system is still sitting on my kitchen counter, my yard will be filled with mucky seawater. 😮What then?
Great video but I am sorry to be the bringer of bad news. The chlorine test was not useful. Chlorine off-gasses in about an hour from neutral PH water. Since the water in your filters had probably been setting for substantially longer than an hour, the chlorine would have been gone naturally before testing. You could have gotten the same result from tap water just by letting it sit for a while. As for the other tests - very interesting and helpful. Thank you.
I just heard on another video, that a reverse osmosis filter, like the Aqua True, takes all the minerals out of the water, like calcium. So, when the reverse osmosis water goes through your body, it will suck the calcium out of your system causing bone problems. Your thoughts?
This is false and here is why........ (Ca2+) 94 picometers and Calcium oxide 146 picometers (K) 280 picometers(Mg+2)= 79 picometer.... guess what the water molecule H2O is? It's 270 picometers. The pore size of reverse osmosis is .47 nm or 470 picometers. So how do you filter out something smaller than a water molecule and still have water come out? You can't
@alan30189, there's no actual science to back up the claim of "mineral sucking water". Dr Ken Berry has covered this topic in some of his videos. And before anyone asks, he is an actual medical doctor.
Berkey’s fluoride filters are confirmed as introducing aluminum into the filtered water at higher levels than what is considered acceptable. That’s one of the main reasons I am considering g the aquatru over the Berkey for our everyday water.
Hello! I loved this review. It was eye opening. I've been using the CLEAR2O water filter for years. It comes with a Brita-like plastic pitcher. The CLEAR2O is supposed to be the "best" (whatever that is) but I'm not convinced. I'm not unconvinced either. I can't afford to send water from the CLEAR2O filter for testing. Would you be interested in testing the CLEAR2O water filter and then posting the results in a future video? I would be grateful. Also, could I keep the Travel Berkey in the fridge like other water pitchers? If the Berkey is this great at filtering water, I may switch to Berkey. Thank you so much!
I’ve had 3 Berkey sizes not realizing we/and pups drank enormous amounts of water!! The Travel Berkey took up way too much space in “frig” and too heavy on shelf (for us)

If it filtered out fluoride, then yes, it had the white filters on the bottom.

Typically filters last for a period of time or if under that time gallons filtered, plus it depends on the water you use, says so when you read up on the website just like every other water filter out there. I’m amazed at how stupid so many people are just because some guy is trying to get clicks claiming berkey is lying. I don’t even personally use a berkey but know a bunch who have for years and never had an issue so I’ve got one as a backup never opened in case we ever needed it during a storm etc… Water filters are all very similar, as long as you’re not going with the cheapest crap you’re prob fine, I got the berkey bc of the people I know who’ve used them for years.

@@johndavidtackett It is hard to say that folks aren't having problems with their water from a Berkey or any other filtration system. Contaminants in water at the typically low concentrations in most people's tap water affect health over a long period of time. The problem with Berkey (and others) is they claim filtration for approx. 6000 gallons but their lab results only analyze over the course of 1-200 gallons of influent water passing through the filter. NSF certification requires that they test through a minimum of the expected filter life capacity. Many of these companies claim these certifications or use wording that makes it sound as if they do
I am currently looking into an AquaTru. I previously bought the Berkey at the suggestion of my doctor, but, even though the red dye test worked beautifully on the Berkey, when I filtered water it went in clear, but came out milky - I mean MILKY. I ran 4 full cycles thru. I re-primed the filters, did the red dye test again at the suggestion of there customer service with the same results. As well there was a white almost powdery substance in the bottom tank after each run. Very odd. Berkey blamed it on my water source. They say that once in a while they get this unexplainable problem and it is because of something in my water. I am on city water, not well water. I returned the Berkey. Hoping better with the AquaTru.
There’s actually a third party test out now on Berky and the advertised claims Berky makes are way less than the reported results. I’m glad I realized before I purchased but sad cause I did like the Berky design
Yes I've had problems with 'white dusty stuff from the filters & being told it must be my water source. Made me give up using carbon filters.
Had this issue as well. It was due to having the white fluoride filters and not flushing them well enough when priming. After i flushed them with running water for longer it went away.
I wish that had been my problem, but I did not have the fluoride filters. I really wanted to like the Berkey, it looks so sleek. Thanks for your solution - hope that helps some people.
If you purchased the Flouride filters (white in colour, go underneath the black filters), this will happen if you incorrectly install them and crack the casing (on the inside). The powdery substance is from inside those filters, and you _must_ prime them properly first as well. But, if you screw them in without the plastic wingnut in place first, the threading ends up being too long and cracks the internal casing of the flouride filter, resulting in the white powder leaking into your filtered water supply.
I've read & listened to a lot of water filter testimonies. I want you to know, I appreciated your efforts and point of view. Good Job (and I rarely say that about anyone).

Was the AquaTru water hardness lower than the Berkey? I noticed you said the water hardness of the Berkey was "better" than the AquaTru sample, so, since the AquaTru is RO filtration and the Berkey will do almost nothing to lower hardness, I'm guess that hard water is "better" than, er, not-hard water? Or is the AquaTru adding "hardness" with the final "filter." I'm so confused~ Edit: Thanks so much for the comparison. The results were surprising and fascinating.

I'd say the the aluminum is worse. there is debate on whether or not fluoride is harmful or harmless but no one thinks aluminum in your water is okay.
We need this aluminium question answered! I've heard that the form of it found in Berkey filtered water is not absorbed by the body.

They said that after 1100 gallons the Berkey filter starts to let other contaminants through which is why they don’t want to have it pass the NSF test on their website. Research for yourself.

all filters knocked down the fluoride and it's an easy test you can do on your own by using pool strips.

I'm reading that Berkey fluoride removal filters use aluminum, which would explain the claims by some that the aluminum level in the filtered water actually increased.
Ok so it filters out the bad, but does it leave minerals in the water? I drink anywhere from 32-48oz of water a day so I bought the small Berkey set up and YES the water tastes great, but lately I'm developing calf cramps I have never had prior to drinking Berkey filtered water. This started about 3-4 weeks after putting the filter in service. Thanks!
Berkey is just simple carbon it doesn't filter out minerals. Best to test your water and the water coming out of your Berkey to be safe. It could be contaminated.
As I understand, it does not remove the minerals. However, @rolandvs7table, drinking too much water in a short amount of time, or per day, can deplete your body of things like potassium. The lack of potassium can cause muscle cramps and charlie horses.

I’ve had my berkey for a few years and it makes me sick, so I just bought aquaTru and I’m able to drink it without feeling sick. These two systems are great for people with mast cell activation syndrome “mcas”

Are the fluoride filters on top of the black filters NEEDED for the Berkey? I live in LA where fluoride is added to the water. Are you black filters good enough to filter that out or would I need an extra filter? Thanks!
You have to purchase the fluoride filters separately. They attach to the bottom of the black filters.
What I've read elsewhere is you only need those after about 1000 gallons have been filtered with the regular filters. They then start not filtering the fluoride out as well. That's when you can add the extra filters.

i was curious about this too, if you go to the berkey website you can go into their lab test sheets. you'll see that the black filters get most of the fluoride out i believe around 80%, but the white extra filters get 99.75% out. I might be a bit off on the numbers but that's what i remember.
Thanks for touching on the coliform aspect to these countertop water systems. That is why I came here. I have a Katadyn. I am thinking of getting the Berkey for the extra fluoride and arsenic filtration.
Update... A friend has been using a Berkey for some time now and has discovered that silver coins can mitigate the coliform in the water. I put 3 silver half dollars in the top and the bottom tanks.

Which Aquatrue device is best to use? I saw one type had a holding tank which was advised against in one of your podcasts. The units with the holding pitchers don't look big enough for bigger families. Also what is the best way to mineralize the water?

How often do you change the filters in the Berkey? I've heard the Berkey claims are a bit overblown, but I was curious what you think as a Doctor that uses this system.
I've had my Berkey for almost a year and its the best water I've tasted so far but I don't want to be naive thinking they won't cook the books. So I bought the Pro one G2.0 filters to see how that goes. They have the NSF rating and need changed every six months. Purifying our own water is going to become a hot topic soon.

I've heard goods things about the Aqua Tru but I hate that it requires electricity. Im looking for a power-free option to use in a disaster or power outage when municipal water supply might become contaminated or the treatment plant is down. So the aqua tru is really not an option.

What I have done to avoid the contamination problem with the Berkey is I put a small amount of Clorox in my upper reservoir every time I fill it. by the time it filters out, problem solved. Been doing that for years

I saw a video showing that the aluminum levels were elevated by the fluoride filter, which uses aluminum to remove the fluoride. I've never heard of any filter adding lead to the water.

Ya might want to ask the folks at AquaTru. This video leaves out so many aspects of water filtration and purification that I would need to see proof of their Doctorate degrees and in which fields of study. A PhD in English literature is a doctor.

I'm looking into a water filtration system so these vids are very informative to me. Something I have never heard addressed is any system's effectiveness with sea water. The reason I'm asking is that I live on the Oregon coast and we are being inundated with disaster preparedness for the Cascadia Subduction Zone mega quake and the ensuing tsunami. Assuming we survive the quake and are not swept to sea with the receding ocean, and my water filtration system is still sitting on my kitchen counter, my yard will be filled with mucky seawater. 😮What then?

Great video but I am sorry to be the bringer of bad news. The chlorine test was not useful. Chlorine off-gasses in about an hour from neutral PH water. Since the water in your filters had probably been setting for substantially longer than an hour, the chlorine would have been gone naturally before testing. You could have gotten the same result from tap water just by letting it sit for a while. As for the other tests - very interesting and helpful. Thank you.
Oh don't worry. The government found another way to get us. Municipalities use chloramines to treat water now and that DOES NOT dissipate.

I just heard on another video, that a reverse osmosis filter, like the Aqua True, takes all the minerals out of the water, like calcium. So, when the reverse osmosis water goes through your body, it will suck the calcium out of your system causing bone problems. Your thoughts?

This is false and here is why........ (Ca2+) 94 picometers and Calcium oxide 146 picometers (K) 280 picometers(Mg+2)= 79 picometer.... guess what the water molecule H2O is? It's 270 picometers. The pore size of reverse osmosis is .47 nm or 470 picometers. So how do you filter out something smaller than a water molecule and still have water come out? You can't

Berkey’s fluoride filters are confirmed as introducing aluminum into the filtered water at higher levels than what is considered acceptable. That’s one of the main reasons I am considering g the aquatru over the Berkey for our everyday water.

Hello! I loved this review. It was eye opening. I've been using the CLEAR2O water filter for years. It comes with a Brita-like plastic pitcher. The CLEAR2O is supposed to be the "best" (whatever that is) but I'm not convinced. I'm not unconvinced either. I can't afford to send water from the CLEAR2O filter for testing. Would you be interested in testing the CLEAR2O water filter and then posting the results in a future video? I would be grateful. Also, could I keep the Travel Berkey in the fridge like other water pitchers? If the Berkey is this great at filtering water, I may switch to Berkey. Thank you so much!
I’ve had 3 Berkey sizes not realizing we/and pups drank enormous amounts of water!! The Travel Berkey took up way too much space in “frig” and too heavy on shelf (for us)
