The theory of the aliens being a bunch of miners makes the most sense to me.
A lot of their "weapons" looks like the blasting, drilling and excavation equipment a mining company would use.

CGI meaning
I always thought the implication of the alien's constant "restraint" was that they have absolutely no way of replenishing ammunition or equipment, so they only use _just enough_ to respond to immediate threats. They retaliate to every attack with equivalent force +1 extra shot. Ship honks its horn? They use their sonic attack. Ship fires one shot? They fire two or three. Ship keeps firing? Full barrage until its destroyed. They managed to take the turn-based component of 'Battleship' and turn it into a logical plot device. Very clever.
They were also mostly neutral, they never attacked unless provoked. The Navy just mistook their horn as a threat.
This movie is a guilty pleasure of mine, the plot is stupid but it’s so fun to watch.

Although Aliens' behaviour is beyond understanding but the fight scene, cgi was pretty amazing.
I love this movie and watched it over 20 times.
The aliens were not military, they were exploratory. The whole point of that force field was to keep the native population away while they conducted their exploratory research, it also looks like they found what they were looking for and started attempting at contacting their species.
This means that they weren't fully equipped for warfare, this is why they weren't engaging first. Their weaponry of course is limited since it is simply an exploratory mission. It would be like us sending 10 people into a forest and three of them were soldiers, sure they have guns and they can fight, but if a simple Jaguar gets the advantage it can kill that human with a gun.
Does this mean the humans are weak? Absolutely not considering they have millions of other humans with tanks, helicopters, jets, bombs, satellite technology, etc. Against the full force of humans that one Jaguar wouldn't stand a chance.
Humans in this movie are that Jaguar, we're not quite advanced as these aliens but the aliens only sent in a couple soldiers. So we were able to take them out. The analogy kind of breaks down though because we also have a massive military ourselves that looks like it can destroy their basic ships at least.

what I love about this movie is that the humans aren't incompetent, usually it's just the very few main characters that are smart and they take down the enemies alone
but here you can see it is all about teamwork!!
OTOH the aliens are somehow more idiotic than a robot/drone on preset programme/track while also having tech that can oneshot the human ships arrayed in multiple bankes of 8x4 racks.
hell that boarding scene alone remains one of the worst "we must defend the vital THING (engine-block?)" sequences ever put to tape. @@BrianMarrino236 Steve Jablonsky was in both of the films, maybe he is why these movies looks badass
@@Simon-ix9jr I know. The music in Battleship was awesome
And like most directors/actors, he has a short part in this film.
As a former sailor on one, an Arleigh Burke destroyer without access to its SPY-1D and contingent of Standard and Harpoon missiles is indeed basically a sitting duck. The 5" mount is really only good for warning shots at very close ranges.
Worth mentioning: the CIWS (the Gatling gun shooting the pegs out of the sky) uses radar for tracking, so I'm not sure why that one worked and the SPY-1D didn't...
I'm no sailor and know little to nothing about how naval operations are conducted but I always wondered why they used the 5" gun instead of missiles
@@keganperry5758 I think that, according to the movie, the aliens had technology that jammed tracking and radar systems, so missiles were useless.
Doesn't the C.I.W.S. target up to about 18 projectiles at once?
Which means this movie was almost realistic.. the directors made good research
@@aileronhelicopters Their biggest sin was having Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles (TLAMs) hitting ships. You can't use a TLAM in any sort of tactical engagement -- it takes almost an hour to load a targeting package, get the missile ready to fire, and launch it. It's entirely a strategic strike weapon.
Still, it's meant to be a fun movie. If you want to see what real naval operations are like, watch "Greyhound". It's set in World War II, but it was very realistic and well-done.
FYI
the alien ships can fly, the reason they don’t in the movie is because their thrusters were water logged you can see this when the alien ship jumps over the smaller boat, they were trying to take off but if you look you can see the busted components on the ship.
bigger issue is that the alien crew and IFF systems were utterly idiotic as well.
All that ammo, so few threats, all that accuracy of fire yet they waited to take significant hits from an obviously not-welcoming area they chose a an invasion/landing zone before every using effective firepower. Even then they had to threaten/alien-equivalent-of-shotgun-ka-chick every 10-30 seconds in each engagement to even pretend to be a threat despite refusing to run or talk.
Every move was openly aggressive and antagonistic except for when it came to actually firing before taking damage in return.

i hope if a sequel comes out.. the next alien race has even more advanced stuff and seem far more lethal. It seemed like these aliens didnt want confrontation they only attacked when they saw aggression/hostility. The fact they wanted to bring their entire race to earth was interesting But it would be funny to see a sequel where the aliens want revenge for how the humans beat them in this movie etc
They didn't want a confrontation as they were being defensive due to them trying to bring reinforcements. In a scene it shows them glassing planets and that's what they would've done to earth.
They even honked back in good faith. It's not their fault our windows and eardrums are so weak to their weakest frequency makeshift horn.

@@paydenladeroute7129 the reason for the hate is cause it's offensively corporate and speaks to the popcorn munching retards who ruin the movie industry
What I like with this scene is the aliens saw the warning shot (something not in their culture) as an act of aggression. So this minor war is totally the humans' fault.
They assumed it was an actual attack because it "missed", they thought they unintentionally missed because their little EMP did jam their fire control systems.
The warning shot was fired after the aliens sent out a massive shockwave blowing up all the glass on the ships and fucking up the electronics.
@@Complexxx123 That was not an act of aggression, you are dealing with a force from another planet, for all you know that could be a greeting call

One of the best Alien scene.
This movie is so cool.
Man, I always wondered what if those destroyers went full speed and tried to dodge those pegs. I mean they're unguided so it should work right?
Eeasy modern navys are incompetent weak and boring wow you got missiles we have a barrage of shells stronger than missiles
Guessing from the battleship scene where they dropped port anchor which is unfortunately unrealistic, maybe they could have dodged it. But they didn't know that, dealing with alien invasions aren't nessesarly known in their doctrine. At least the CIWS worked
Yeah, even though their missiles couldn't lock on they still have that turret and some torpedoes to fight with
Here many say that the aliens have weapons - garbage. Absolutely agree. But there is one thing that could be voiced in the film. Take your best, most modern cannon and shoot it ... under water ... you can also shoot with a laser or plasma under water ... and see the performance. The shells of the wrinkled and fastest-firing guns under water turn into black dust within a meter. And the more "backward" weapons, the better their shells cope with the unsuitable environment ... in fact, it's all about the environment - a different density, a different chemical composition, air resistance, dispersion coefficient, displacement parameters and indicators of vortex flows.
It is likely that they brought a ton of weapons, but
1.Lasers are useless - the dissipation factor has to be tested for a long time and manually calibrated.
2.Plasma is useless - air resistance indicators and the order of vortex flows destabilizes and breaks clots
3.High power railgun is difficult to use due to the moisture-saturated atmosphere, creating a polarized charged ion cloud around the installation
4. Homing missile armament is equipped with controls:
a. in environmental conditions - this is the tail, spars and ailerons on it - in an unknown environment, all aerodynamics goes to hell
b. in space, these are gyrostats and corrective engines; in conditions of launch from a planet in the atmosphere, they are useless pieces of explosives and electronics.
4.Contact drones remain (which showed maximum efficiency), although they do not move as they should.
5.from small rocket launcher - only grenade launcher systems for short-range fire and carpet bombing, which
a. suitable for lightly armored spaceships and work on areas, sufficient to make holes in the primitive natives' space fleet
b. should fly in a direct flood, without turning over, like a salvo of unguided missiles, but they have to be used in completely inappropriate conditions, somewhat by eye, because there is nothing more to shoot from the word at all.
6. Hand weapons are also ineffective due to the particular environment and atmosphere.
One gets the impression that they did not want to land at all - all equipment and weapons were intended for space skirmishes. The goal of the small reconnaissance group is to take a defensive position in near space, shoot all the shells of the underdeveloped monkeys, study the environment for the subsequent adjustment of the weapons and tactics of the main fleet. But everything went to hell, the transmitter welled up, there is no fuel to fly back, the only option is to seize the local repeater with the available forces and report the situation to the command along with the transfer of data critical for setting up weapons and generally planning tactics.
But here, as in the war of the worlds by H. Wells, they meet with the armored floating cannons of the aborigines and naturally rake them off the weapons specially created under the terrestrial conditions, repeatedly tested and improved, rough, but effective again in terrestrial conditions of weapons.
If they explained it in the film, it would not have failed. They would simply say that their equipment and weapons are intended only for outer space and that's it. Under terrestrial conditions, energy weapons dissipate, due to other features of the environment, the rocket flurry turns into uncontrollable bullets, which are also destabilized in flight. It is shown that they are already spinning them with all their might before the shot in order to somehow stabilize, but without an accurate and long-term study of the environment, nothing will come of it. Drones turned out to be the most effective, and then only in terms of mechanical damage, and they do not have enough crowds in the conditions of earth's gravity and atmosphere, which in fact made them consumables - very expensive and limited consumables.
One small mistake of the scriptwriters, who did not consider it necessary to say it, and the film rental Amba, although the fiction itself is not bad.
@@sviatshekh157 Another explanation could be that the aliens were not a military force, but a mining company. That would explain why they were not exactly armed for warfare. These pegs they shoot out could be some sort of ore extractors.
I wish they made a sequel for this movie with even more insane action from the aliens.
