If there is something missing from this episode that you'd like me to comment on let me know and I'll try and answer it in the comments or in next week's video. Thank you for being here! 👇

This chapter of Bridgerton was way sadder than the others so far. I feel like the "mental health treatments" scenes (aka torture scenes) just were too much and not what I was expecting from a series that usually focuses on sexy costume romance.

Since you haven’t watched Bridgerton before, it might be helpful to know that Lady Danbury (and Violet Ledger, later Lady Bridgerton) are major characters in the series. Thank you for your insights! Also…episode 4 is a lot.
Oh, and King George is the same King George that ruled during the American Revolution. We see a version of him in the Hamilton musical as well. All of the Jane Austin books (also Bridgerton series) take place during the “regency” when his eldest son had to rule as regent because of George’s mental state.

Dr. Courtney, what is the difference between an anxiety and panic attack? I had an episode on the anniversary of a traumatic event. My heart raced so fast it was painful and I felt dizzy and almost fainted. At the hospital the said except for a raised pulse and slightly high blood pressure everything was okay. After extensive questioning the doctor used anxiety and panic attack interchangeable. Are they the same?

Your analysis of their first meeting is exactly how the actor who plays George described it. Two people seeing each other for the first time as simply that...people, and it's something that both needed desperately at that time.

Love all your insights so far, especially since you’re not familiar with the Bridgerton world. You’re correct that some of the characters are based on real historical figures, specifically King George III (who was king during the American Revolution), and his wife, Queen Charlotte. They have a fascinating story, and there’s definitely true-to-life elements throughout the show, but this is ultimately a fictionalized interpretation and reimagining of that time period and these characters. Looking forward to your next reactions!

As for what potentially might be being portrayed in the show the actor who played George said that there WAS a specific diagnosis that he was portraying because he wanted to be able to portray it respectfully and accurately. But he never said in the interview what disorder he chose to portray. But it was probably bipolar with psychotic symptoms. Because that is the disorder that most historians think that he had due to some journals that were released to the public in 2013. Prior to 2013 it was speculated that he had porphyria which is a blood disorder that can cause neurological issues and body pain and can give a person symptoms of a bunch of different mental illnesses including psychosis-like symptoms. So it would look like he had mental illness but it's actually a physical one. Porphyria could also explain the handshaking we see later on in the show but also that hand tremor could just be anxiety... So the show definitely kept the diagnosis vague and due to the mixture of symptoms could genuinely be either disorder. But the actor most likely was attempting to portray bipolar.

I'd actually recommend watching the main Bridgerton show as well. As this show takes place between season 2 and season 3 of Bridgerton... So there's characters from the main show that they don't introduce properly, as you normally would in a show, because they assume you've watched the main show and already know who they are. I mean I have seen people say that you potentially could watch this show without having seen the other seasons but as someone who has seen the main show... I don't know how true that is... There may be a bit of confusion for you. But I guess if you fall in love with the older women that are in this show... Specifically, Violet Bridgerton... Their characters in modern day get explored a bit more within the main show. Mainly, because the main show is about Violets' children. So shes around a bit more in the main show than the other older ladies in QC...lol.

What you say at 5:40 about the privilege of choices some people do not have hit so hard for me today. Because I might not be part of a racial minority, but I am part of a handicapped minority with limited mobility. I cannot just answer "Yeah sure, I'll go" when someone invites me to go anywhere. I have to google the place to see how many stairs there are, is there an elevator, that type of information. Any outside area I am invited to, I need to verify the terrain to see if my wheelchair can move around freely. Any amusement parks I want to go to, I need to check if their pathways are dirt path or paved, what are their restrictions on people like me, what steps I need to take, what paperwork I need to bring. I just came back from Disney World and it took me hours of research to see which rides I would be able to sit down in and which rides I would need to pass on. And this week, I wanted to go on a trip with a company that uses tour guides for certain cities. And I cried frustrated tears because some of their rules did not make sense ("Yes, ma'am, you certainly can bring your wheelchair on our daily adventures. However, please be advised that the driver is not allowed to open the luggage compartment once we leave the hotel"... Really, how does bringing my wheelchair with me every time we leave the hotel because I can't walk for very long makes any kind of sense IF THEY DON'T OPEN THE BUS' LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT DURING THE DAY FOR ME TO BE ABLE TO TAKE IT OUT? What good does forcing me to pay for someone to come with me if I can't even get out of the bus during the visits???). So yeah, the privilege of choices is something I had to give up when I had my accident.
Oh, and I beg to differ. I have been introduced to the Bridgerton back in 2003 when Daphne's book first came out.
That makes me a Dowager in the Bridgerton world haha

On your point with egocentric thinking, it’s important to know that Charlotte is only 17 in this story too. She is almost 18, but in our current century with the human development science we now have and know, she IS still a child. It’s important to remember in this era, children were given adult responsibilities and seen as adults (for example George being the future King of England probably from birth; if he wasnt already bestowed the title at birth), and most women were seen as more than capable to be adults at childbearing age because that’s what their sole purpose was. I mean Lady Danbury was sold off as a wife at 3 with the sole purpose of being groomed for childbearing. All this being said, it is TOTALLY understandable to see why a 17year old girl/child would react in this way. ESPECIALLY given everything she just has endured so far.

I read about the real Sophie Charlotte zu Mecklenburg-Strelitz and the daugthers said that they felt imprisoned by her. It was not the case that "Charlotte" wanted them to marry. It was the other way round. Many of them did not marry because their mother did not want them to. They had affairs within the household because they could not go anywhere. I know the series is very fictional but at the same time I find it a bit dissappointing that they did not portray that kind of behaviour of someone who feels so alone that they cling to their children. Or maybe theres another reason? Would be so interesting ... But instead they chose this approach which is not very believable for my taste. If Charlotte would have wanted her children to marry then she would just have arranged for that to happen.

    • @MildlyPerturbed

No it was because King George III was very protective over his daughters, as his sisters had had abusive relationships with their husbands, and he didn’t want what happened to them to happen to his daughters. He thought none of his daughters’ suitors were good enough for them. Later on, Queen Charlotte kept her daughters close to her during the Regency Era as emotional support, as George had become more consumed in his “insanity”.
In reality, King George III and Queen Charlotte had one of the most loving relationships in history when it came to royal couples. George was one of the only kings in history to never take a mistress (which was common back then), and they even slept in the same bed for most of their marriage (which is seen as very unusual for royal couples and of the high class. Even Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip slept in separate bedrooms).
