- Horst Weber was 19 jaar oud toen hij werd ingezet tegen de Britten tijdens Market Garden. Hij heeft hard gevochten en medailles behaald. Terugkijkend voelt hij zich toch vooral genaaid door het regime en de Führer. Hij geloofde alles en het bleek op onzin gebaseerd te zijn. Het dilemma: de mooiste jaren van je leven zijn je afgenomen door een stelletje idioten, waarin iedereen geloofde. Dat wel.

Wat een oprecht ontzettend lieve man. Bedenk goed: het zijn altijd kinderen die naar het slagveld worden gestuurd. Zijn uiteindelijke commentaar spreekt boekdelen en men kan slechts hopen dat iedereen zich dat ter harte neemt. Zeer ontroerend.

Glaubhafte Erzählung eines sympathischen SS Mannes. Allerdings hätte er sich die letzten Worte des Beitrags sparen sollen denn das er damals schon - sozusagen als Jugendlicher - die Politiker hätte überprüfen müssen , ist unglaubhaft und wohl eher dem jetzigen Zeitgeist angepasst.
Jedenfalls hat er sich rehahabilitiert!

Dat verhaal met die peren klinkt bekend, mijn vader (17) ging op de fiets van uit het noorden richting Arnhem als soldaat (functie onbekend, mogelijk SS) ter versterking, hij had 2 fietstassen vol met peren meegenomen, verder vertelde hij nooit iets er over, alleen de tocht per fiets en dat hij op het eind van de oorlog " in Arnhem" had gewerkt. Hij is in 2014 overleden
My uncle Richard Schmid was in the Panzer Div. Frundsberg. He went missing in the Goerlitz area, when the Div.was sent after Arnheim to bolster the German retreat on the eastern front. I have no pictures of him or grave to visit.

@@MaxAndela what a quick response. Info from Red Cross said the div. was finished off around the river Neisse by Gorlitz. One grave I have seen there in hospital cemetery shows this is true.
@@raymondsmith-gt5bk Good that you have things clear. The more I study about the final months in 1945, the more I discover that the Reich was fully disintergrating. No archives, no administration. Just chaos. I have been working with a famlily member of a nazi bigwig that simply disappeared during the Bautzen battle. The Russians held his mother captive (raped her) for a year in 1945-1946. Untill they were convinced that her criminal bastard nazi dad was actually dead. BTW, Von Winterfeld was one of those behind the lines in Ukraine offensive. Eichmann caliber desktop murderer. Gave his grandson, my neighbour an enormous shock when we did the archive research. The story in the family had been a different one.

@@raymondsmith-gt5bk You can find info on Wikipedia. It was the last succesfull German battle. They wiped out the Polish but were then overwhelmed by the Russians.
