- #Restoration #Rusty #Cleaning Inspired by @AwesomeRestorations Shovels are overlooked, under-appreciated and abused. I want to glorify the tool that has been in use since the beginning of time by creating the world's fanciest shovel. I took an old rusty shovel and did a full in-depth restoration on it. I made a one of a kind metal etch design with a custom walnut and white oak handle. Watch the entire process how this shovel goes from Trash to Cash and becomes the (self proclaimed) World's Fanciest Shovel!

i too am a big fan of the dark/bright wood contrast. love your handle. also i would like to mention that i find the narrative to the restoration great. its refreshing to have step by step commentary
Thanks, I appreciate it! I love the contrasted wood pieces

I can't believe how well you placed the masking on the shovel. It's perfect. And you can tell from the finished product that it is perfect!!
Thank you Tracy. The curves of the shovel were really hard to place the vinyl down correctly. In a couple areas I actually had to cut the vinyl and overlap some to make the design connect.
Hi Blake, great work. Please do more with metal and wood. Thanks, Ollie and Seb
Gorgeous!
I would love to see you do a coffee table using metal etching for legs with your signature resin and wood for the top!
Your channel has been my favorite for a few months now and I’m just digging deeper into some of your old videos and I am IN LOVE with your work
Excellent restoration! 💪🏽
This is absolutely gorgeous. I truly cannot wait until I am able to construct my own workshop.
Thank you Jessica!
Good luck on the shop!
Awesome work, thank GOD my ADD saves me from my OCD 😂🎉 Both of which are in overdrive now !!! Great Job Brother Man 👍
That's the most badass shovel restoration video I've ever seen. Nice job. Someone needs to take you on in this competitive niche.
I really enjoy all of your videos.
Your work is amazing. And your imagination... you can turn anything into art.
I restore motorcycles so I do a lot of whatever blasting of metal (sand, glass, soda, aqua...) and if you want to deeply clean rusted steel you need more pleasure and preferably closed cabinn. You can outsource that so you save yourself a lot of time and mess :). Other thing is that old metal cleaning is so satisfying 😌
You are very skilled and bright those shovels would be hanging on my basement wall totally AWESOME 👍
I sure do love me some inlays!
Etching too!
Nice..very nice
Me too! Thanks for watching!
😮 beautiful 😊
very nice love the pattern
Amazing transformation! Keep up the great work as the goal is to inspire others to build something awesome! 👍🏼
Thank you so much!
The added detail on the spade itself took the project to a whole new level of cool. Will that pattern scrape off as you use them?
That was cool as hell brother, can you do a American holly 1, with antique different tips besides shovel, and custom type metal hardware, and connections?
Amazing… I don’t know how I stumbled on your channel but I’m glad I did. It’s relaxing to watch your builds. Love to get a mini version of one of your sculptures someday.

Really excellent work, Blake! Those shovels are now way too beautiful to actually use 😂 I'd love to see you do more restorations with your creativity coming to the fore. If I had one tiny criticism I would say don't over edit your videos and cut out lots of good content. I subscribe to many maker channels which regularly upload 20 minute videos. Having said that, it's your channel and all content will be awesome, I have no doubt 👍😁 Love and respect from the UK 🇬🇧🇺🇲
That is a really interesting thought... I could have easily made this video 20 min but I have always thought that I needed to capture the audiences attention by going fast-paced and cutting out all the 'boring' stuff... I wonder if audience would drop off making this longer??? maybe I will try
@@BMSculptures I agree, maybe just try a longer video and see? For Mt part I was interested to see how you did the design, what software you used, how the vinyl printer works etc. I'm so looking forward to future videos - the voiceovers are great too 👍

Bravo!
Love the metal and wood. You have a amazing talent .
Nice brother God bless from Canada eh
That looks REALLY nice!! But it's probably one of the most blister producing handles I've ever seen lol. A smooth/round handle built the same way would be awesome!
luxury spade. its a fun.
Go grab a few gallons of white vinegar. I own a knife & tool sharpening business, there's a fair bit of rust removal and restoration on cleavers and garden tools. Phosporic acid based rust removers are quick and supposedly leave an oxide layer that won't rust, but also blackens the base steel a little. White vinegar takes longer (scrub the part over every 2-3 hours until you're happy with the finish) but it's cheaper. People don't realize just how aggressive it can be at removing rust (and protective layers!).
What oil are you using for the steel? It looks like a jelly, I want to try some.
Stunning work. I’d display the shovels above my mantelpiece 😂
What a fine addition to your tool shed sir.
Indeed! It will pick up dog doodoo for years to come 😊

Lovely : )
4 hours 37 minutes later, the Sun was at the same place in the sky, lol🤣🤣🤣
Nicely done
Could you make a 6 string electric guitar out of red wood and epoxy please.
Why didn't you just use electrolysis to remove all the rust instead of trying to grind/sand blast it?
Blake, I love your stuff. Have you done anything in Wisconsin?
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up
awesome thank you!
New to your channel, very nice job easy to understand
If i have this shovel i will keep it in my bed room , never not for garden
Nice work.
Thanks!
Obviously they look really great. But realistically you are probably never going to use them to dig now. Thumbs Up!
Thanks Gary, Honestly the large shovel is a wall hanger BUT I do use the little shovel for gardening!
Nice work but that 4:40 is not a snug fit. It needs to be wedged in there with a couple of hard slams. You shouldn't be able to perfectly place the handle like you did without pounding the handle on the ground while holding the shovel head. All the work holding it on is on that little brass pin. The metal will expand as you work with it, there will be play on the handle, and if there's play on the handle, the pin might break. But I suspect you won't do much work with that shovel at all after all the effort you put into it. You probably have a separate working shovel.
How in the world did you grind this thing to 2000 and not destroy the patine?
Btw, I do use Ash handles from the hardwarestore haha
Wondering which one would be more stable.
What kind of Oil do you put on the Wood and the Handle?
🎼It's a kind🎶of magic🎵
Glad you like it!!!
What type of oil did you use on the metal
Is this a re-upload? I felt a giant déjà vu when it comes to this cheap sand blaster and that you are having sand all over yourself. Hm. 🤔
Yes! Unfortunately I had some issues with this video around 6 months ago. It was originally 20 minutes, I trimmed it down and made some changes. Dont worry you are not crazy! haha
I was very hesitant re-uploading it, but thought it had been long enough. I don't plan up re-uploading ever again either btw. Just a copyright issue on the first vid!
@@BMSculptures I see.
I knew, that I am not insane, my mother had me tested. (...)
hahaha
Yeah I was thinking the same thing at the exact same point Lol
Whats with the Silent Hill music at the end?
I remember this video with a different beginning.... using a shovel for what most shovels get used for. Anyway ,what kind of oil do you use on your scoopers?
haha yeah I had some copyright issues with the previous video so I had to make some changes. While I was at it I also cut out around 10 minutes to make it shorter.
For the wood I use Festool heavy duty finish.... For the metal I use Jojoba oil. (link in the description)
WoW the only problem is I would be afraid to use them .
Just incase one got a scratch on it . :)
Picks up dog doodoo like a champ!
I should buy some clamps
Thoughs on copper electro planting and mosaic pins
I have never electro plated copper before so I cant be of help sorry! I know it does not work on brass
Beautiful job. I watched intently up until the 7 min mark, where I audibly said 'NO' with the metal etching. You lost me there. Would've looked so good with a plain Jane silver finish!!
But nevertheless, I appreciate the effort.
🤭🤷♂️....❓Metal Cruelty 🤪
facebook is watching you
I don't think of spades going to do much better 😅 check it out you can fight vampires with it too😂
But does it pass the ‘nanna test? These would have to hang on the garage wall. No way I’m shoveling horse sh** with ‘em! (Nice work)
hahaha I think it passes the Nanner test. This can shovel dog doodoo like no other!
What’s your favorite piece you’ve ever done?
use cocacola for rust
That handle won’t last. People…don’t glue multiple pieces of wood together to make a shovel handle. Just use straight grain hickory and move on with your life with a handle that will actually last
I got u 1 dislike because, at finish of the video, you can can do the second one in 20 seconds…. Omg i f””””g jelous and you say “ey” 😂😂
No, really i’m learning so much with your proyects.
Congrats 👏👏
hahaha Thank you!
I highly doubt this is an antique purely based on the fact that there is "CHINA" and a part number stamped on it. Good try though.
Why didn’t you just restore your existing shovel?
because that would have been smart... and well, I am not very smart
Have you considered electrolysis for rust removal? It really is amazing. I restore vintage cast iron cookware and so far I've run into pieces with 100+ years of crud, rust, paint, and even concrete. Electrolysis removed it all within 12 to 24 hours. The time will depend on the size of the battery charger you use.
I love the banana content honestly. I've been binge watching all of your episodes.
That cutting machine i bet is so expensive and for most of us who doesn’t know carpentry we will just go to Home Depot and buy ready made handle for $19.
How do you dispose of the cleaning solution after etching?
I have a gravel pile in my yard I put it.... But at this point I do not have a good solution
My dad restores a lot of rusted car parts by using a powdered liquid molasses for cattle. Mix it up and let your project soak until it’s clean. Any paint or rust will disappear and your left with fresh metal.
wait what? The stuff at the end was insane... I was gonna ask about the oil but then you said it lol
I like how you put the design on the metal on the shovel part and the shaft was really cool overall it was good
Did you really eat that banana after cutting it with dirty shovel? Great Work!
thats a wonderfull handle..i like the combination of two woods.
Thank you! I appreciate it
why cut the handle??? the longer it is, the deeper the hole😁
👍👍👍
I use regular pink erasers to clean my sandpaper, only reason i use them though is because a buddy of mine is always dropping me off boxes of them that he gets from work lol its definitely saved me a ton of money on sandpaper
You made those absolutely Beautiful, looks like a piece of artwork. I would hate to use them because I wouldn't want to get those dirty. I know you can make more and I've been wanting to do inlay in some of my projects.
Amazing how a simple shovel can become a work of art. Yet other great video!
I really enjoyed. great job. I subscribed
Thank you! I appreciate it!
That was beautiful work brother but are you honestly going to ever use it for anything more than picking up poop?
Probably not. Strictly a pooper scooper.
well done👍
Thank you 👍
Hi,loved your video and I am a detectorist and found a rusty shovel head,it looks cast and probably 1800's,so an old shovel.i can send a photo and the shaft part has corroded.i would like to try and restore it if possible and it's very heavy.thanks.
awesome! You should restore it!
@@BMSculptures yes,I'll give it a go.
You can use it as spoon when drinking soup.
I need to make a big bowl though
good work 👍
Thank you!
beautiful job...you have a collection of unique and beautiful tools

I’ve been back into Skyrim lately and I think an absolutely sick project would be to make an axe with the game as inspiration. Maybe an orcish or glass would be sweet to make out of epoxy. I want to try it myself
That would be really cool. Although I think it would have to be completely forged.
@@BMSculptures You could do it out of a greenish or blue resin right? If you know what one of the orcish, glass, or stalhrim look like, they’re a glassy-look so resin would be perfect I’d think. Just would need to be decorative cause it probably wouldn’t be too tough.
oh yeah now I see the pictures of them. very cool and detailed looking. It would be tough with resin because carving the sword thin and sharp would be very susceptible to fracturing the resin. I think its too thin
@@BMSculptures Ah that would put a damper on the project! Think an axe could work?
@@MasonR3 The majority of it would, but again when it comes down the the sharp edge it would be really thin and would have a high probability of fracturing. I would hate to spend hours and hours creating this thing to have it fracture (or drop it and the entire thing shatters!)
I bought plans from Stodoys and did it very quickly.
awesome
Fantastic plans!
