This is what us bourbon heads love in a channel. Taking it to basics of things many of us haven’t tried before. It’s a perfect example that not every channel has to have extremely sophisticated drinkers who are discussing things and bottles that some of us haven’t even heard of. Love this.
I have been watching burbon based youtube for two years now. And I can say this is the first time i have seen someone physically taste the food bourbon flavors taste like. You guys are absolutely fantastic and are better than all the rest. This is ahead of the curve. Great job guys.
The Father + Son banter here is 100% the best part of this video. I really enjoyed the concept too. QUESTION: Am i not the only follower here that wants an episode about their family background and how this channel got started. I want an origin episode please!
It's Bourbon Night and SLB Drinks are by far my two favorite whisky channels. I can't decide which one I like the most, but I do know that I like both because on both the interaction is so natural. 🙂
@@WhiskyForBeginners I just checked out bourbon night, thanks for commenting this! Now I have 3 favorite. Whiskey tribe is my other ones. I’m still kinda new to whiskey so I love learning
When I was very young one of my first memories was having to eat a tablespoon of molasses 3 times a day. I dreaded it. The doctor told my parents to feed it to me. I still do not know why. It was lol funny to watch you guys eat that stuff.
This is why you guys are the fastest growing bourbon channel. It's not all about tasting allocated bottles or other bottles that no one can get. Thanks! So glad to be part of this channel!
My son was the pickiest eater growing up, we literally used to cook two dinners and his was usually cheese grits. So I totally feel you Curt. I really liked this idea of training the pallet.
I would love to see a small handful of bottles on the table with specific notes that matchup with the samples you are trying... Then we can sit at home and match them as well and try to assimilate the tastes and aromas!
You guys are my absolute favorite. For someone that is “newer” to the bourbon drinking game, you make it fun and interesting to learn. I never feel like I’m a moron when it comes to understanding what I’m drinking and how I like to drink it. Thanks guys!
This is why I love your channel. Lots of variety when discussing bourbon. I have never heard what you guys do besides make entertaining videos. I see Kurt as a huge hand model, plant manager or finance. Trenton I see at the local upscale restaurant getting free drinks from cougars or an IT job. How close am I.
Really helpful for those of us who are bourbon novices. I love hearing you describe a bourbon in terms of spices but darned if I can replicate the experience. Very helpful!
Today was a hot spell... 45 degrees. 2/2/2023, so I of course GRILLED.... Chicken thighs, Venison burger , and venison steaks and tenderloin.... To grill you need a timer to cook properly.... I hadn't ever had it before so I open up some Rittenhouse Rye.... Just mixed it with Diet Coke. and was really pleased with the taste... Had that bottle six months. Finally gave it a try thanks to you..
Crème brûlée or crème brulée, also known as burnt cream or Trinity cream, and virtually identical to the original crema catalana, is a dessert consisting of a rich custard base topped with a layer of hardened caramelized sugar
It's a flavor note that also appears in Chardonnay occasionally. Notes in wine are easier for me to pick out due to the lower alcohol content, bourbon is definitely more challenging. But we just have to keep trying.
Amazing how Trenton's taste experiences vary so greatly from Kurt's -but this is exactly what will balance the blind tastings as how to describe the notes Great video guys.
Great video as always. It's funny, I was recently talking to a friend about this and how we are trying to train our brains into picking up notes of thing that are not even in bourbon.
Totally putting everyone through this at home! I think I'll add maple, licorice, freshly pulled grass, old grass, oak sawdust & burnt oak sawdust (both for smelling not tasting), and some flower blossoms.
Y'all are killing it. I love each and every video. Trenton's response is priceless. "you can't follow directions" reminds me of my children who are around the same age. I LOVE IT! Keep up the awesome content.
I stopped in at Bee Discount Liquors today on my way to KY. Met Harry, who shaved Trenton’s hair. What a great guy and what a great selection of bourbons. I picked up 6 different bottles. I told him I found out about his store from watching SLB. I will be visiting him more often, even though it is a 2 hour drive from my house in Illinois. On to KY.
Great channel! I'm just starting the Bourbon life. I've bought 8 so far including Blantons, B Trace, Woodford, but most enjoyable is Eagle Rare-- so far.
The way Trenton says "fibrous" then follows with "you gotta really GNAW at it" cracked me up! Also, I don't think I've ever seen anyone take smaller samples of anything to taste it! My tastes are definitely more aligned with Kurt's. This was a fun one, y'all. Thanks a lot!
Cloves are used primarily ground up into a powder and used with other ground up spices like cinnamon, allspice, and nutmeg. It's used in desserts like pumpkin pie, cookies, and spice cake, but also used in meats, rice, and stews. Hope that helps.
I started watching you guys like 6 mos ago. Not only do you make me wish I had a relationship like yours, I feel like we could be great friends! You are Real people with great personalities! I love what you do! You are truly great ambassadors for whiskey. Please keep up the great work! I truly appreciate you.
As usual, this was a lot of fun, especially watching Trenton with some of them. I have never known anybody in my life that would not eat spoonfuls of the vanilla frosting. But seriously, this is the part of bourbon that I find the most challenging, picking out flavors. I can usually find a flavor after someone else says it is there, but I have a hard time finding it on my own. But I think I am getting better at it the more I drink, so I have that incentive! Time for more research!!!
After 16 months drinking whisky, I've found that the three most important factors in getting better at tasting it are practice, practice, practice. I'm still learning (and I suspect I'll still be learning after 16 years), and there's one bourbon I've been drinking for over a year that I'm still learning from.
Love how Trenton doesn’t realize that creme brûlée is actually supposed to be served cold. That’s because the custard has to set in the fridge before adding sugar and caramelizing the top with a torch. It’s supposed to be a cold and refreshing dessert
I also really like the father-son banter on these videos while enjoying whiskey together and can very much relate. My oldest son and I, about the same age range as Kurt and Trenton, also have a good time over a glass of whiskey. Keep up the great work!
I can tell neither of you guys spend much time in the kitchen. 😂 Kudos to Mrs. SLB for whipping up a crème brulée for the occasion. Killer move! And as an aside, some folks eat straight molasses on their pancakes (not me!). So much fun...thanks for the laugh!
This was a lot of fun, and it’s always nice to go back to the basics to grow in your tasting. Seeing Trenton step outside of his comfort zone with foods is always entertaining. Great video guys!
Love this! Thanks for the lesson! Sometimes I think we "taste' notes that are more related to how things "smell" than actually taste. The nutmeg is an example. I can smell nutmeg and know it's nutmeg, but sometimes the taste escapes me. I hope this makes sense...
@slb drinks I enjoyed this so much I feel broken under 100 proof I seem to smell everything but no flavor over 100 I smell nothing and taste all at once lol I tasted spearmint today for first time thank you for sharing and helping me on my journey
Great video!! It’s wonderful to see a father and son have such a great time together. I look forward to watching y’all’s videos. Keep up the great work!!
I started off questioning whether this was going to be a snoozer, but OMG it was fantastic. I did a belly laugh more than once. Great job. Cool idea too.
Since I'm familiar with all the flavors on the bar top, I need to go back to the beginners videos and maybe start testing my tasting skills. Y'all are so fun!! You were the first channel I saw when I put in a search about bourbons. I've watched a couple of other channels and they can't hold a candle to you. Great job again!
Where's the jerky? I hear some guys taste meat in their bourbons... Excellent video. Sometimes it's tough to name the notes you pick up in bourbon, and exercises like these can train your memory muscles.
This is a very good way to work on the ability to discern and describe. Often used in wine-tasting circles and it is really helpful (and apparently also can help broaden one's world of experiences 🙂). Well done!
Great video guys! This gives a good perspective on picking up different notes and flavors. I never liked butterscotch as a kid, but the subtle flavor in New Riff single barrel, was absolutely amazing. I believe it was a special barrel for Old Town wine & spirits in Kentucky. Barrel number 2403.
Good video for us rookies trying fixing to identify flavors. I know what they all are, but I’m still having trouble identifying them in the bourbons. I just know what bourbons I like, but can’t pull out the individual profiles like y’all. But, I’m trying to learn one pour at a time. Maybe you could expand on this by taking one or two spices and pair them up with matching bourbons that highlight those spices. Thanks for sharing with us.
My brother is a Bourbon drinker, and I'm getting into it, too. So, I love your channel. This episode was interesting and now I'd like to see if you could tell me what snacks would be great to have on hand when a Bourbon drinker shows up.
One of my favorite syrups for old fashioned this time of year is turbinado sugar syrup in which I’ve dropped a few cloves, allspice and cinnamon and ginger and let sit for 20 mins then strain….
I love this video so much. One, I was laughing the entire time. Secondly, great subject matter. I was gifted an aroma kit for Christmas and always trying to improve my ability to get notes. This is just great!!

Excellent video guys. Back to the basics is always helpful. Surprised you did not have any bourbon to pair with your tasting. Maybe you can do a beer and bourbon pairing sometime.
There are tasting kits available of various sizes and prices. Also I have been on a tasting at Woodford and they gave us several foods to sample along with the bourbons. Also Bulleit Distillery gives little containers with different spices in to smell and pick out of their bourbons. My taste buds arent as sharp to pick out some of the flavors some people say they detect. I dont doubt them, but I feel some of these tasting notes could be suggestive.
Molasses is the thick dark syrup left from processing sugar cane into light syrup. It's more bitter than syrup. That's our deep South definition, your mileage may vary.
Great video, using flavors out of the kitchen. Good way to start out on learning different smells, next step up would purchasing an aroma kit. Several on the market with some basic items to some with over 36 different aromas.
Wow missing out on creme brûlée for an entire life up until now seems devastating! Glad you finally got to enjoy one of the best desserts on this planet
I know its basics and this could be unlimited would like a few different nuts, peanut, pecan, almond maybe some fruit, orange , strawberry, apple, and definetly toffee candy love it guys great content
Absolutely the funniest video to date. Had us both laughing throughout the video. Wondering if you filmed a tasting before filming this episode. Enjoy watching you crack each other up.
This was a really cool video and I’m going to try some of these myself but OMG, Trenton and his cometary had me buckled, I was cracking up and had tears in my eyes! Cheers 🥃
Very interesting video today. Great topic, watching you guys learn as you went down the line was both educational and entertaining. Trenton definitely leaned toward the artificial sweeteners (sweet tarts) and Kurt leaned toward the more natural sweeteners. Great stuff guys. Crème brûlée looked delicious.
Paused at 3:19 to come and say this and make my predictions: I love you guys so much and I love your content, but heavens above! This is gonna be awesome! 🤣😂🤣😂 You two have probably forgotten more about whiskey than I will ever know; but I cook and bake all the time. I can't WAIT to see your faces when you try whole cloves and straight molasses! And I don't see a mortar or a zester/grater; I kinda just wanna see y'all lick the nutmeg! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Edit: I wasn't disappointed! This video was great! I love that you guys do this kind of thing! My only wish is that Trent would have licked the whole nutmeg before Kurt pulled out the grater! He put everything else in his mouth! 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 10/10 video!👍👍👍👍👍
I think the challenge that I have with tasting bourbon or other spirits and trying to find the notes is that I am probably the least sensitive when it comes to taste. There really isn't any food that I can say I wouldn't eat or that I hate, which makes it difficult for specific notes to stick out to me. Doesn't stop me from trying though.
I can’t believe you boys have not tasted Crème Brûlée before!!! Get out from under the bourbon bottle and try some other things. 🤣 A good structured lesson to better understand and qualify your tasting notes! Nice job!
Excellent idea guys! Laughed out loud the entire way through this one. Couldn't wait for Trent to get a taste of that molasses! Personally, I find it pretty challenging to pick out specific notes in bourbon. Most of the time, I resort to a pass / fail system when trying new bottles. I either like them or I don't!! Keep up the good work, loving the different directions you're taking things lately. Cheers!
I have a suggestion for a tasting. I came across Buzzards Roost, I purchased the cigar rye and the toasted American oak bourbon by them. I find them to be very good and have heard that they are now possibly part of Bardstown.
This was a great video and just the tip of the iceberg. My favorite tasting notes in bourbon are brown sugar, bananas and cherries. Also I’ve never, ever picked up anything with a sweet tart note, but Bardstown KBS has heavy notes of Fruity Pebbles.
Molasses - lol is a by product of sugar cane production and is often used to make rum. Where I grew up (in Ohio) my Grandmother would use it for baking all kinds of things. My Son is 17...this would go in similar fashion if we were tasting things...
We had a discussion recently at a meeting of the Sexy Bastards Whisky Club about this very thing - bravo for a fantastic video, a fantastic idea and a stellar execution!!! This will be on the agenda for an upcoming SBWC assembly... you guys never fail to raise the bar (pun fully intended). And try your creme brulee with peaches and bourbon - next level!!!
Entertaining video to say the least. I have a son around Trenton’s age as well. It’s amazing how they don’t have knowledge of certain things like cloves, dates and prunes. I can eat icing by the spoon anytime 😂
This is what us bourbon heads love in a channel. Taking it to basics of things many of us haven’t tried before. It’s a perfect example that not every channel has to have extremely sophisticated drinkers who are discussing things and bottles that some of us haven’t even heard of. Love this.

And I'd like to see the wives - Rebecca and Michelle, I believe their names are - on camera. 🙂
Check out It's Bourbon Night channel. SLB Drinks was on a recent live stream. They discuss the origin starting at about 19:15.
It's Bourbon Night and SLB Drinks are by far my two favorite whisky channels. I can't decide which one I like the most, but I do know that I like both because on both the interaction is so natural. 🙂

Yes! Could be a fun idea for a live show. Give viewers time to prepare then we could taste along with Kurt and Trenton.

Got to enjoy crema catalana in Barcelona last year. I wasn't aware of its history. Delicious!
Sounds even better after your description!

The family chemistry of this channel is priceless. Best thing on RUclips!
This is so much fun to watch! Love the entertainment, education, and definitely the laughter between Dad and Son.

Loved the vanilla frosting part. You guys crack me up.
For Trenton...molasses is the byproduct of making white sugar. Add molasses back to white sugar to make brown sugar
Molasses is refined sugarcane. Syrup is the sap from a maple tree. Two very distinct flavors
YO🤣🤣🤣 They way he asked what is this about the dates, had me in tears🤣🤣🤣
You guys are true gems, making great memories together.

Facts
I can confirm I’ve heard people name Tuna, and buttery steak as notes in tasting. It’s wild.
Meat stick
Love this teaching everyone to fine tune their nose and palate tasting. Ohh and First 1️⃣☝️🏆
This video was great 😂 Trenton eating all the spices was killin me. The icing at the end had me rolling😂
This is a very good way to work on the ability to discern and describe. Often used in wine-tasting circles and it is really helpful (and apparently also can help broaden one's world of experiences 🙂). Well done!
Great video! I would suggest taking it to the next level & tasting w/ sipping bourbons to demonstrate the recognition of flavors.
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! I may have recommended this, or not, BUT ALWAYS WANTED THIS!!!! Perfect perfect perfect guys!! THANKS!!!
I like that most of the tasting notes have came from the roots from mom's in the kitchen as kids moms cooking baked goods.
Good video for us rookies trying fixing to identify flavors. I know what they all are, but I’m still having trouble identifying them in the bourbons. FINALLY. I've been waiting for this video! Thank you guys! Much love from Australia
Why do I get the feeling Trenton was a picky eater growing up? He was a good sport here! LOVE this video.
One of my favorite syrups for old fashioned this time of year is turbinado sugar syrup in which I’ve dropped a few cloves, allspice and cinnamon and ginger and let sit for 20 mins then strain….
Nice!
I just thought of trying this approach to improve my whiskey palate. Thanks for the video
You guys honestly could be the next Laurel and Hardy! Ya'll crack me up!
I love this video so much. One, I was laughing the entire time. Secondly, great subject matter. I was gifted an aroma kit for Christmas and always trying to improve my ability to get notes. This is just great!!
I sort of looked for a kit like that but didn’t have any luck.
Great video
I have been drinking for decades and still mostly go with like it or dislike it.
After 3rd nose operation last year I can finally, for first time, smell better.
So drinking is bringing much more flavors to me now I just do not know what they are
Diving deep into the science of whiskey tasting, perhaps Pulitzer Prize material! Great show!
😂
Excellent video guys. Back to the basics is always helpful. Surprised you did not have any bourbon to pair with your tasting. Maybe you can do a beer and bourbon pairing sometime.
Literally yelling at the television “No Trenton, Don’t eat it!” when picked up the clove.😂🤣😂
What a Great idea to help those that just don't get it, cause they drink mixed most of the time!! Awesome Show and Presentation!!

Absolutely the funniest video to date. Had us both laughing throughout the video. Wondering if you filmed a tasting before filming this episode. Enjoy watching you crack each other up.
98% of the time we only film one show at a time because it’s usually in the evenings after work. We are generally a bit goofy that’s all lol
Molasses is the healthy part of sugar cane that is stripped out to make white sugar. Light brown and dark brown sugar still has the molasses on it.
Another great video guys.... Well thought out and creative. I need help teaching my palate.
This was a really cool video and I’m going to try some of these myself but OMG, Trenton and his cometary had me buckled, I was cracking up and had tears in my eyes! Cheers 🥃

great way to get better tasting notes... much cheaper than buying a $500 kit. love this idea. thanks for sharing. cheers. 🥃
"Get you a wad and suck on that for a while" I lost it 🤣
What a fantastic idea for an episode. Well done. Love the reactions!
Love to see you guys come up with a tasting samples box as part of your merchandise. Great video!
This was a great video and just the tip of the iceberg. My favorite tasting notes in bourbon are brown sugar, bananas and cherries. Also I’ve never, ever picked up anything with a sweet tart note, but Bardstown KBS has heavy notes of Fruity Pebbles.
This is an awesome video! Love the idea and got to say Trenton had me rolling on some of these notes 😂😂
Darn near wet myself from Trenton’s facial reactions. You two are the best. Gonna have to do a similar event to improve my skills
Great video, as always! Love watching Trenton cautiously taste items that he is skeptical about.
Molasses - lol is a by product of sugar cane production and is often used to make rum. Where I grew up (in Ohio) my Grandmother would use it for baking all kinds of things.
My Son is 17...this would go in similar fashion if we were tasting things...
Great idea! The best tasters try everything!
Y’all should take and record your experience in a sommelier class. Would also love to see your takes on your favorite whiskies afterwards
Both are great suggestions!
Great video. Might be the funniest video you’ve done. I was laughing with Kurt every time Trent made a comment. Keep up the good work!
Entertaining video to say the least. I have a son around Trenton’s age as well. It’s amazing how they don’t have knowledge of certain things like cloves, dates and prunes. I can eat icing by the spoon anytime 😂
WHAT!!! No leather, oak, pipe tobacco. This was super awesome guys. This might happen at a fri night pour with the fellas sometime soon.
