  • @joewalsh9483

    So much of gas mileage is knowing how to get the most out of the system. My 2021 XLE Highlander averages 40 mpg in 50 degrees or warmer. In temps below freezing, it drops down to 30 mpg. 10 below or colder, you don’t care about mpg, just that it works! When I drive, I get up to speed and then let up on the gas a bit, you can see your mpg ramps up while you keep your speed. This is much like a ICE car being allowed to get into overdrive and locking the torque converter. Also, I take my foot off the gas coming into a red light and when needed, I apply the brake gently allowing the regenerative breaking to charge the battery. My wife drives the hybrid more like a regular car and ends up with 32 mpg most of the time. I know better than to try more than once to “educate” her.

    Your calculation is wrong. I have a 2021Highlander Platinum Hybrid and after 15,000 miles, my hand calculated MPG is about 35. This is in the ball park of the car calculated MPG. You should never share the mpg after only 100 miles of driving. Bad review.

    Nice video with useful information. Re the mileage; according to Toyota, this car has a 17.1 gallon tank. It stands to reason that as the fuel is spent. the weight of the car decreases, and the average mileage increases. You spent 3.75 gallons, so most of your driving was done at the car's heaviest. A gallon of gas weighs 6 lbs. 17 gallons of gas weighs 102 pounds. By the time you get down to 5 gallons (30 lbs) you have about 1/3 of the weight. I bet the average mpg would be higher if you drove it from full to reserve.

    • @ekbuz
      @ekbuz Год назад +1

      It would be slightly better, but in a 4,000 lb vehicle, I wouldn't expect 100 lbs to affect things by much. I don't expect MPG to drop by a large margin for every passenger you add.

      I have the same but 2021… I get 31.7mpg average. I think the reduced gas mileage is because of the bigger rims, but I could be totally wrong. I know with electric cars they state a reduction in driving range with bigger rims, so I imagine that must apply to all vehicles.

      Eco does barely anything for a hybrid car. All it does it make the gas pedal slow to add power, and cut the AC and heating power. The gas tank issue is so annoying. Usually after the pump stops the first time I remove the nozzle from the tank, give the tank five seconds and reinsert the nozzle to top off. Sometimes I’ll get another 3 gallons before the pump kicks off again. I think it’s just a pressure issue.
      Not to be confused with intentionally topping off your tank by overriding the auto shut off at the pump which can lead to serious problems.

    Maybe your gas station is ripping you off which is not unheard of. My highlander hybrid consistently gets 38-39 mpg indicated and 1-2 mpg less calculated. Most gas pumps are calibrated to deliver exactly 10 gal. If you purchase more or less than that, many unscrupulous gas stations take advantage with the right software in their pumps.

    You're absolutely wrong. I drive a sienna hybrid and when I calculate by hand it's always within 1mpg when I get gas. I even have video of me getting gas and comparing it to the actual mpg that's displayed. No way you got 27.6. The tank wasn't full when u got gas before hand then. If I drive like a maniac in sport mode I can't get below 30mpg as shown and I usually get around 38 or higher avg even 44-45 if I drive very easy.
