This was my high school soundtrack. I said I'd never delete songs I got tired of for reasons like this. You forget about them until you hear it again and you wonder why you stopped listening in the first place? Why did I? Truly so many good songs off limewire I'll never get back.
Even before finally being diagnosed with Bipolar 2 in my late teens, this song stuck with me since childhood. It means that much more to me in my adulthood.
Everyone complaining that it's the Sympathetic Nervous System that reacts, technically the Parasympathetic Nervous System also reacts, its shuts off rest and digest, shutting off is also a reaction
So some line changes I've noticed in hearing them live. "Parasympathetic nervous system reacts" was changed to "parasympathetic nervous system shuts off." Also the word "rapist" was changed to "racist" which I assume is because it's a trigger word for a lot of people.
That's because the parasympathetic nervous system is actually responsible for relaxation. Fight-or-flight mode is the job of the sympathetic nervous system.
The term was probably changed to racist to fit to the modern day political climate. If he's not changing the mention of child pornographers and nazis then i think it's less a worry of triggers and more to keep it relevant to the time he's playing. Like Kimya Dawson playing Loose Lips
I found this song through a post in a facebook group called "oddly specific playlists" that was requesting songs with incorrect information in them. Apparently it's not your parasympathetic nervous system that is responsible for fight or flight mode, that's your sympathetic nervous system. Your parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for rest and digest mode, and I am obsessed with that word
To me, what makes this so terribly upsetting, is that unlike a lot of other "weird dudes with a guitar" kind of music is the fact that I've seen Sean live and he's _uncomfortably_ sincere. This isn't just him preaching. These are the actual awful thoughts in his head. That both makes this song so much worse _and_ so much better. If that makes any sense.
There is a character named Gertrude Robinson. This song actually resonates with a lot of the characters whose lives she touches as you go through the series (without giving spoilers). (Really the song works with the series in general, but the name helps)
Don’t know that you’ll ever read this, but I sent this to my son when he left for the military. He loved it, just as much as I did. Thank you for making it ❤️
This song never ever gets old because it's less appealing for a catchy melody and more appealing for incredible lyrics. Lyrics that you could repeat over and over and over and over again and they never stop resonating with you on an understanding and personal level. This is one of the greatest songs ive ever heard lyric-wise, it's poetry. Every line is special and meaningful, and the message is just so human- in terms of being a bad person and hating yourself, hating everyone else, knowing that you don't understand anything and desperately wanting to. It's the acknowledgment that life is suffering and nothing cares about you and you can't understand why. It's humble and self-destructive and a bit angry and that's what folkpunk kinda is at its core. I find this song works best with the contexts of their other songs like "People" and "Survival Song" and "Rejoice", because all of AJJ's songs together seem to tell a story of "the world is a horrible place to live and people are hateful and selfish and we all want to die, but somehow we don't and we keep on living, and somehow we find good things despite it all."
Was anyone going to tell me the line is "fight or flight mode" and not "firefly mode" or was I just supposed to read a comment by a disgruntled psych student myself?
