What I think is that the days where you can make a generic superhero movie, you gotta do something to really stand out. Like shazam2, blue Beatle, and the marvels were not bad films, but they were a little on the generic side. Though I also think a lot of COVID restrictions and Disney really uping the amount of superhero stuff hurt movies this year.

Another style of video game adaptation that's been pretty successful is something like Arcane and Cyberpunk Edgerunners which don't adapt the game itself so much as the setting, themes, and characters. Although I don't really see them taking an approach like this with the Zelda movie as that's a series that is so much more focused on Link going on an adventure in a magical land than anything else. Structurally, they would probably want to do something like Kubo and the Two Strings (something animated, go figure).

Seeing Wes Ball is working on the Zelda movie actually gives me a little hope because he's really proven himself with his mocap work. I could totally see a "live action" Zelda be entirely mocap like Planet of the Apes and Avatar. If they can use mocap to turn Benedict Cumberbatch into a giant dragon, I'm sure they could take people who look nothing like Zelda characters and make them fit the role perfectly

I’m glad that people have a lot more hope for video game adaptations and I’m also glad I’m a part of that crowd. It’s pretty clear at this point that the reason video game movies have finally become good is because unlike ones of the past, the obvious best example being the 1993 Mario movie where I’m convinced the crew hated Mario, the people making these actually care about these games like Paramount’s Sonic team and Illumination’s Mario team (though from what I’ve heard and seen, that cannot be said for Halo), and I think that’s what’s given people hope for this, me included though honestly I’m not sure how many video game adaptations I’m gonna see cause surprisingly with the amount of video games I play, the only two video game franchises I’m a fan of are Mario and Sonic. Everything else is either a movie tie-in like Pixar’s Cars which is the first video game I remember playing, or superhero games like Spider-Man 2 which has taken over my life, but I’ve been a Mario fan for nearly my whole life and, as of this month, I’ve been a Sonic fan for 7 years so those movies were ones I was inevitably going to watch and absolutely loved them because of how much they meant to me and how I had so much fun with them and it’s made me so excited for Sonic 3 and the inevitable Mario sequel, I have seen a few other ones like how I saw Angry Birds at a drive-in with my family but that was just because we went there for Captain America: Civil War and yeah, Angry Birds wasn’t terrible but still not good, my family watched Uncharted for a movie night from my brother’s request since he has played those and I actually enjoyed it enough, it wasn’t great but I had a good time with it, which is also mostly the same with FNAF though the jump scares got me everytime cause I don’t handle stuff like that well (I mean, that’s not the only one, Man-Bat in Arkham Knight still gets me as well). I got no clue what other ones I’ll see since again, Mario and Sonic are the only ones I care about, but maybe I’ll go see ones like Legend of Zelda when that comes out (might have to play at least one game before I do like BotW), but either way, I’m happy video game movies have finally reached their good times

The Sonic Movies are massive hits. That said, I wouldn’t quantify them as good SONIC movies, there’s a lot of fundamentals that are missing that makes Sonic work narratively like Sonic’s sense of freedom, the inherent Eastern/Anime storytelling, the lack of accuracy to the source material or the lack of an iconic soundtrack which Sonic is known for its music. These are good kids movies with a Sonic coat of paint but they’re not written, visually or sonically like Sonic.
It’s like if you took Batman but then put him in the same tone as Deadpool while being written like Steven Universe.
I’m not expecting one to one adaptations of the games’ stories but I wish they kept a lot of the iconic fundamentals that made Sonic so beloved to start with. A stylistic world, a cast of cool and heartwarming teenage characters with a narrative inspired by anime (Hence the famed Sonic to Anime Pipeline), an iconic soundtrack with elements of beautiful and atmospheric orchestras fused with rock epics, I want a lot more action that really showcases Sonic’s speed and thrill.
With the current movies, everything related to the games is surface level meanwhile there’s too much of an emphasis on pop culture references, toliet humor and the human side characters. Sonic isn’t the cool, badass leaderlike Shonen protagonist most people love him for, instead making him a hyperactive child with abandonment issues that’s bordering the line between Ben 10 and Steven Universe. Eggman isn’t nearly as sinister and threatening as he should be. They reverted Knuckles back into a joke. Tails is the only character I think is portrayed faithfully while being new.
I’m scared for Movie 3 since it’s supposed to be an adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2, one of the most iconic, darkest and action packed stories in the franchise. With a character as tragic and heavy as Shadow, they cannot afford to downplay it all for the sake of comedy, casuals and kids. And two vital and the most prominent female characters, Amy and Rouge, aren’t even in the movie universe yet. I fear what could be done because I feel like they would be the type to make a joke out of Shadow being grim and brooding and make that a running gag which will only perpetuate the Shadow is a Vegeta clone/Edgy Sonic stigma we’ve had since 2011.
Maybe I’m just being hysterical as a long time fan but with the direction the movies have taken, there’s a lot that concerns me for what is one of the biggest branches of the franchise.

I, for one, would absolutely LOVE a doom movie that has a decent budget (Annihilation :c) and actually respects the source material (Doom 2005 >:c). Many people might say that Doom as a concept is unfilmable but I don’t think it’s true since the modern games have given us plenty of lore that is interesting enough to be turned into a movie.
Plus, the Doom Slayer himself is quite similar to John Wick in terms of motives and their reputation as a terrifying monster in the criminal/demon landscape, so there’s that.

This is something I've been theorizing since my hype for the Mario Movie started. I pasted a comment I posted in a Discord about a year ago in December of last year.
"I have a theory about video game movies and the future of them. For the longest time, video game movies have been seen as box office jokes. There was never a reason to make them. Kinda like how up until Superman directed by Richard Donner, comic book movies weren't seen as profitable. However, in recent years, video game movies have exploded in quality. Here's my theory: video game movies are the new superhero films. Look at the current state of superhero films.
The MCU is starting to fall apart because of a lack of vision.
The DCEU is split among fans and is just in shambles. Even the one DC film that was released as a standalone movie was very divisive.
But video game movies... With films like Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2, Detective Pikachu, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and even Uncharted, video game films are... more profitable than ever. Sonic beat out a comic book movie TWICE. The first time with the first film and the second time with the second film. Nobody can tell me that's not a sign of things to come."
So... yeah. I do think Video game films are replacing superhero films.

HEY, massive fnaf fan here and ive been following the movies development for a while and although its believed that the script for the Banana Splits Movie was a rejected fnaf script Willy's Wonderlands director has gone on record to say that he wrote the script for the movie and it was not based on fnaf. Although I find it hard to believe that it wasnt partially inspired by fnaf there is no real evidence to support the idea that it was a rejected fnaf script. I'm not trying to give you to much crap, its a very easy mistake to make but yeah just clearing the record on that part of the video.

See, i see two things happening here: What I hope will happen, and what will almost certainly actually happen. What I hope will happen is that you're right. That all these video game adaptations become unique tonally and interesting and different genres all reflecting their source material. But what will almost certainly actually happen is much less interesting. To explain, think of superhero movies. On the surface, superhero movies sound like they should be so varied.
The Hulk should get a horror movie about a man grappling with his own literal inner demons. Thor gets a hopeful and grandiose movie about magic and monsters, the 9 realms, and a brother whom he loves who will stop at nothing to destroy him utterly. The guardians of the galaxy should get... well, they should get exactly what they got, and same with the joker. But movies like GOTG and Joker are the exceptions, not the rule.
In nearly all cases, superhero movies didn't expand out and become unique, with different heroes becoming unique takes on different genres. Shang Chi is ALMOST a martial arts movie with a superhero protagonist. Eternals is ALMOST a cosmic revelatory movie about the philosophy of existence, free will, and the meaning of life. Avengers: Endgame is ALMOST a fun time heist. Secret Invasion COULD have been a paranoia thriller about trusting nobody (but failed utterly).
These are not trying to be genre films with superheroes. The superhero film became its own genre, with its own tropes and conventions. As much as I love a lot of modern marvel properties (i hope the previous paragraph didn't mislead you, I loved eternals, shang chi and endgame), they'll never hit as hard as the comics do because the comics prioritize what will fit the story best over what will feel the most like a traditional marvel property. Writers like Al Ewing and Jonathan Hickman who aren't afraid to push boundaries, overturn status quos, and lean into the genre that will best fit a hero instead of a generic superhero genre could never get hired to write movies because that's precisely what the movies can never do.
So here's what will actually happen with video game films. We'll have a few great ones, in this mini golden age. We'll still get some bad ones, our Fant4stics and Iron Man 2's and the like. But for a while, things will be good. Then studios will start meddling. They'll work to blend all these movies together into a tonally consistent sludge. We will lose video game movies to the video game "genre," which will have its own tropes that will be applied across all films no matter what would suit that story best. And they'll still be good movies, and we'll still have passionate directors come along to do great things, and there will be a lot of great animated stuff even once that starts to happen, but for the most part it'll all blend together and in 15 years we'll be talking about video game fatigue

    9:13 or a mute actor.
Personally I think Link, the character is mute but not deaf, everyone can talk to Link, Link answers many yes or no questions, in game Link usually waves his arms when giving longer answers which could be short hand for sign language, and there's a maze in Ocarina of Time where you follow music.

If they are planning to make more video game movies, i think that making them animated movies would be a lot interesting than live action. But thats just my opinion.
A movie of Dishonored or Titanfall will be awesome (either live action or animated), if its made well. I think both fans and people who've never played them can enjoy it.
Another random idea: The reverse of this should be a thing. Bring on a John Wick game, or a Mission Impossible game (done in the same style as Metal Gear Solid).

I’m a new Metroid fan (only played dread but it’s one of my favorite games) but a Metroid movie is by far the Nintendo movie I want the most. If they captured the horror/isolation elements along with the cool power progression and going from cool to awesomely powerful that would be super cool. Metroid is the only Nintendo movie I can see live action being live action without being weird.

A short film that starts off as a horror film heavily inspired by Alien, and then it shifts completely once Samus arrives, because now it's about how much of an absolute badass she is. Just go off on the space pirates or whatever, maybe have a fight with Ridley at the end.

There's no reason a Zelda movie shouldn't be live-action in a world that has both Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. Live-action just fits epic fantasy adventures. Of course, I hope that's actually what we get with the Zelda movie instead of something that tries to capture the somber, explorative vibe of BotW and TotK.
