These videos are so easy to follow. Made this Painkiller and it was GREAT! I love that you always have the ingredients out at the start of the video so I can easily see what is needed. I cannot explain why, but seeing the ingredients as you explain the drink backstory gives me a minute to become acquainted with the ingredients and it somehow feels less intimidating. There are others out there making solid videos but they just don't feel as accessible and they are not as focused on the steps of the process as yours.
Just made one of these with Plantation 5 year. Never had a Painkiller before so I wasn't sure what to expect. Well, it is now one of my favorites alongside the Singapore Sling and the Old Fashioned. Dangerously easy to drink and super refreshing.
I've actually been to the Soggy Dollar Bar! My dad's from the Caribbean (Nevis, but lives on St. Thomas now) and my family goes down to visit from time to time and he takes us island hopping. I've also been yo Foxy's and met the man himself when I was 8. I got a Sprite at his bar, haha.
Puerto Rican Coquito is FANTASTIC! Cinnamon/Nutmeg powders made into a 1 cup water of tea, Coconut Milk/Cream, White Rum/Dark Rum, Sweetened Condensed/Evaporated Milks. Ice/Blend, ENJOY.
Thanks for this! This has a become a regular since I saw the video, and I also passed it on to a friend. It's so simple and so delicious. The ingredients are also very easy to get. It just ticks so many boxes.

I love making Painkillers, and that Appleton Estate is my preferred rum as well. 😉 It adds just a little hint of banana which I like. I find that Real brand cream of coconut is a suitable alternative to Coco Lopez, and might be more easily available (and less expensive) for some folks.
This has been my drink of the summer, I absolutely love this drink! Especially tasty with a split base of Plantation 5 year and Cruzan blackstrap. Everyone go make one right now!
We discovered Cruzan on our honeymoon in St. John, USVI...drank plenty of it, with and without painkillers. Didn't realize they sold it at my local Kroger when I got back! Guess what I make every summer?
I bartended in the USVI and that's not quite how we made it on St Croix where I worked. But then, in this business, there are always different recipes for the "same" drink. We used an overproof (151) rum as the base and added a splash of orange juice to this recipe. I remember always describing this drink to the tourists as "a Pina Colada . . . for grown ups." On hot island afternoons, they went down really easy. But, trust me, most people could only handle one or two of them. They really did kill your pain. ;-)
I've tried a lot of variations and finally settled on this tasty treat. There's just enough juice. 1 Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof 1 Appleton Estate 12 1 Pineapple Juice 1 Orange Juice 1 Cream of Coconut 1/2 Lemon Juice Nutmeg Shake and pour with crushed ice.
That's pretty much my recipe for Not-A-PKer, too. Onliest difference is that I like a little more coco -- and, to top it all off, a float of Cruzan 151. Cruzan 151 has been discontinued but I knew it was going to happen so I put in a fair stash; OTOH, if you can get 190 Everclear, you can combine 5 parts of 80 proof Cruzan gold aged rum to 6 parts of Everclear and it's perfect. If your local area limits you to 150 proof Everclear, it's 5 parts Everclear and 1 part aged rum -- this is a little rougher than the stronger mix but it's OK for a "second best". This gives a little "Wheee" right off the top (don't serve with a straw) and -- if it's what you need -- it's the perfect pantie-dropper.
I like this cocktail for a few reasons. 1 you can make it for younglings and non drinkers by omitting the rum. 2 technically the level of pain dictates the oz of rum so a painkiller #4 is 4 shots of rums to really dull the pain. Ouch 😮 and 3 the freshly grated (coughmicroplanedcough) nutmegs is so aromatic. 😋
Steve! My man! This is THE drink that set me down the path of both rum addiction and cocktail enthusiast....When are you posting the cocolopez recipe? As it happens I'm in the midst of a "painkiller deathmatch tournament" to get to the perfect ratios. Also, #F**kPussers because you're right they're a**holes....and worse, their rum is terrible - unbiased opinion. The recipe in this video differs from the one posted in 2017 which had a total 240 ml of liquid while this one has 142.5ml. The 2017 version had a lot more pineapple juice. Did you find the juice overpowered the rum flavour too much?
I do the same thing but on 3 levels depending on pain. 2, 3, or 4 ounces of rum depending on hangover. And - I use White or silver rum for base and add a 1/2 shot floater of Appleton’s . Way better than a Bloody Mary.
First time trying this drink the other day at a restaurant. Made it at home last night, but it seemed to be missing something. Maybe the orange juice flavor was too weak... Anyways, I went searching and found this video. First time viewer! I have to say...that shake technique has to be the sexiest thing I've ever had the pleasure of watching on youtube. When I made my painkiller, the color was a lot darker. I used Meyers Dark Rum. I like Cream of Coconut, but I find it hard to work with. It’s so thick, I use coco Lopez, or the Squeezable bottle ,.. Do you think Coconut Milk would work/taste just as good?
It would be darker depending on the rum you use.. you can make your own cream of coconut which is super easy and it's thinner to work with too: ruclips.net/video/roASIPHeYOw/видео.html
Vid suggestion: Caribou Lou! 151 Rum, Malibu Rum, and Pineapple Juice. The recipe seems to be two parts 151, one part Malibu, then as much pineapple juice as possible to cover up the 151.

I've updated my recipe 2 Pussers Gunpowder Proof or Plantation Original Dark - both are delicious. 1 Pineapple juice 1 Orange Juice 3/4 Lemon Juice 3/4 Creme of Coconut 5 drops Saline Dash of Nutmeg right in the center. Enough to smell but to much in the drink leaves a dusty taste in my mouth.

I've heard about the history of the drink, and yeah its quite shitty. ☹️ But still im a sucker for the Pussers line, since there is not much alternatives that offer that exact kind of flavor profile. I personally like to put 1/4 oz lime juice to the mix to balance the sweetness of the coconut. Anyway, great vid. 😊

Why do you call nutmeg a garnish? Its part of the flavor pallet and important to the taste of the drink. A garnish would be pineapple leaves or decorative pieces like that.

I don't think I'll ever buy a bottle after reading those stories! >_
@@StevetheBartender_ i understand 😗, btw i see you have a bottle of bulleit whiskey, there has also been quite a big saddening controversy surrounding the label and mostly the owner mr Bulleit , not going to go into detail but its on the internet. 😅
Hupi Ukko googling right now! 👍
Oh wow! Can’t believe this is the first I’ve heard about it.. looks like that’s the last of my Bulleit too!
@@StevetheBartender_ Yeah ☹️ i stumbled upon the story some weeks ago when i was scrolling through my ig feed and I was just about to buy my first rye whiskey and bulleit was the one that was available but i think i will find myself some Old Overholt instead after hearing all that. 😅
What’s the reason for not using the same ice you shake with
Mainly presentation..
Is it the weekend yet? 😞
...so close!
My favorite adult beverage!!!❤❤
Would you use white rum instead??
You can if you like - personally I'd prefer an aged rum..
"This particular shaker...is quite small..." and makes you look like a giant. 🤣🤣
I don’t think it’s the shaker...
@@StevetheBartender_ haha! I mean, I realize you aren't a tiny man, but that shaker looks so tiny in your hands.
Lovely drink...great video sir!
The way you shake it and then smile every video 😂😂😂
It's not standard, but in my opinion this drink benefits if you add a little bit of lime juice.
have u tried the blue hawaain with malibu or other coconut rums? is it good?
Malibu is too sickly. Coconut cream or a coconut syrup like Monin are much nicer for any drinks with coconut flavours. Malibu is just yuck
My wife is now randy for the night after seeing Steve’s smile
I have watched several of your video's and i want to know exactly when the 'Cheesy Grin Shake' became a thing?
I think some time after 200 videos.. not sure exactly when. I smiled once and now if I don’t, people get worried 😆
Kudo's for not using Pusser's rum. 👍
looks like a pina colada - except for the orange
- i personally prefer tequila and cointreau rather than rum
Why do you call nutmeg a garnish? Its part of the flavor pallet and important to the taste of the drink. A garnish would be pineapple leaves or decorative pieces like that.
Proceeds to grate fingers for a Halloween twist!
Noone likes navy strength rum pouring in because That is made in USA to talk about USA military quads but I like it , great meaning ^^
Are you going to be in Glasgow this year?
I hadn’t planned on being there, something on? 😁
My favorite drink when I lived in the Virgin Islands
I genuinely wanna know:
Why straining out the ice of the shaker when you will later add more ice?
Because the ice can/will break up and leave ice shards. Leaving them in, they will melt quickly and give you an over diluted drink.
@@adamfritzsche nice, thanks for the answer. Makes sense.
My national pride swells every time I see you use Appleton! 😂 Cheers!
Yuck, coco lopez. I'm totally down with your diy recipe. Cheers!
Yep, remember smile to the camera!
So this is effectively a pina colada on the rocks? Or am I wrong?
Wrong. It is more balanced, stronger cocktail.
I will be right over........Burnaby, Canada/X-Files Actor, Syndicate.
4:05 You describing yourself, Steve? ;)
Haha 😁
Coco Lopez for 2.95 at the box store.
Not everyone has a box store..
Hey Steve did you get enough likes to make a diy cream of coconut video. Or can you just do one anyway??? 😉😉
DIY Cream of Coconut: ruclips.net/video/roASIPHeYOw/видео.html
I add a dash of bitters to mine.
Can't help but notice the ratios are way off compared to your painkiller video from years ago. This one is a lot stronger! What gives?
Give us the coco Lopez diy!!!
45👍🏻 from brazil!
Thanks CFLG! :)
I'll stick with Pusser's, the taste of that rum makes the "Painkiller"...
