    The joy in these sports is found in the learning curve, the sweet spot. Too easy is meaningless. But expanding, overcoming fear, or pushing one's envelope, in a given a set of conditions, is what the sport really is, and that, has a spiritual quality...

    The sensation of flying above the water on a foil is amazing. Additionally, as the team rider mentioned, the foil opens up places and conditions that were previously not fun to ride due to the chop or light winds.

    This looks amazing. You could cover serious distance with ease given steady wind. I suppose there's a reason all the America's Cup boats are foil boats now! Amazing that such a revolutionary innovation was still to be found in the ancient technologies of sailing and surfing.

  • @jonathankerner2094
    @jonathankerner2094 4 года назад +1

    A question: I haven't tried kiting because my location does not have the beach space for launching, or the necessary wind very often. Now these wings seem to need less wind, and are hand held. So why can't we make smaller kites (the size of a wing 3-5 m) and short lines? Then, we'd get more power by being maybe 20 feet up with the kite, but without the tremendous (dangerous) lift or long, long lines. Why not? Kind of like a trainer kite?

    • @MikeMPharmaCyclist
      @MikeMPharmaCyclist 4 года назад

      Not sure what you want... Small kites from 4 to 5m surface area already exist and are very common. You can find a 5m Cabrinha Apollo brand new right now for 250 bucks, a great deal. I don't think I need to tell you how you could shorten existing lines to whatever length you wanted... Lol. The problem is the wind gradient, part of why kites generate so much power (which is usually desirable unless you have great high wind always) is because they are up so high in the less obstructed, more powerful wind. On light wind days you rig longer lines to eek out more power by getting the kite up higher.

      Redbox what makes it a "fad" ? I'm guessing fish will just get out of the way having sensed the foil coming like they would if it was a predator (or not and get eaten) For the relatively small numbers of surfers in the world occasionally hitting a fish I don't think it's a major concern for conservation. There are bigger issues and things killing sealife
