Manohari singh used to write music for all the sections of the orchestra. I don't know if there is till anyone in India who can write and arrange such a large orchestra with prominent brass and string sections. Respect. Deep respect.

कितने हज़ार गीत होंगे जिन्हें हम सब सुनकर मस्त होते रहते हैं। संगीतकार,गायक,गीतकार की वाह-वाह करते रहते हैं लेकिन इन कई हज़ार गीतों में जादू पैदा करने वालों में एक जादूगर का नाम है - मनोहारी सिंह। अपनी फ्ल्यूट (स्टील की बांसुरी), सक्सोफोन और मेंडोलिन के जारी उन्होंने हिन्दी सिने संगीत में कितने रंग भरे हैं. ज़रा याद कीजिए- ‘ जा रे, जा रे उड़ जा रे पंछी, बहारों के देस जा रे’ (माया), ‘तुम्हे याद होगा कभी हम मिले थे’ (सट्टा बाज़ार), ‘अजी रूठकर अब कहाँ जाइयेगा’,और ‘ बेदर्दी बालमा तुझको मेरा मन याद करता है’ (आरजू), ‘अछा जी मैं हारी चलो मान जाओ ना’ (काला पानी) , ‘रुक जा ओ जाने वाली रुक जा’ (कन्हैया), ‘आजकल तेरे मेरे प्यार के चर्चे हर ज़ुबान परा (ब्रहमचारी), ‘शोख नज़र की बिजलियाँ, दिल पे मेरे गिराए जा’ (वो कौन थी), ‘है दुनिया उसी की , ज़माना उसी का’ (काश्मीर की कली)’, ‘हुजूरे वाला, जो हो इजाज़त ‘ (ये रात फिर न आएगी), ‘गाता रहे मेरा दिल′ और ‘तेरे मेरे सपने अब एक रंग हैं’(गाईड), ‘जाग दिले-दीवाना, रुत जागी वसले यार की’ (ऊंचे लोग), ‘जाता हूँ मैं मुझे अब न बुलाना’ (दादी मां), ‘रात अकेली है’ (ज्वेल थीफ), ‘रूप तेरा मस्ताना’ (आराधना), और आर.डी. बर्मन के तो लगभग सारे संगीत में कहीं वादक तो कहीं अरेंजर तो कहीं किसी और रूप में मौजूद हैं ही।
और अगर कुछ भी याद न हो तो सबसे ताज़ा यादा है अभी थोड़े दिन पहले ही सोनी टीवी के शो ‘इन्डियन आईडल ५’ पर आशा भोंसले के साथ भी मनोहारी दा अपने सक्सोफोन के साथ गुज़ारे दौर का जादू जगाते हुए दिखाई दिए थे।
मन हर लीनो
मनोहरी सिंह नेपाली मूल के संगीतकार थे। १९४१ में उनके दादा नेपाल से आकर कलकत्ता में बस गए थे। वे ट्रम्पेट प्लेयर के तौर पर ब्रिटिश फ़ौज की बैंड के सदस्य के रूप में यहाँ लाए गए थे। थोड़े अरसे बाद पित्ता भी यहीं आ गए और कलकत्ता में ही पुलिस बैंड में बतौर बैगपाईप और क्लार्नेट वादक नौकरी पा गए।
८ मार्च १९३१ को जन्मे मनोहरी की उम्र उस समय १०-११ बरस की थी। मगर घर में संगीत के माहौल के चलते वे भी संगीत में अभी से गोते लगाने लगे थे। पित्ता घर पर अपने शौक से फ्ल्यूट बजाते थे सो मनोहरी ने भी उसे ठान लिया। फिर मेंडोलिन।
इसी तरह उम्र के बढ़ाते पड़ाव के साथ शौक भी बड़ता गया। सौभाग्य से मुलाक़ात हो गई जोसेफ न्यूमेन से। जोसेफ हंगरी मूल के संगीतकार थे, जो कलकत्ते में रह रहे थे, उनके पित्ता सक्सोफोन बजाते थे। मनोहरी सिंह भी इसी साज़ से दिल लगा बैठे। और दिल लगाया भी ऐसा कि अस्थमा के मर्ज़ के बावजूद इसे ज़िंदगी भर फूंक-फूंक कर ज़माने भर में इसकी सुगंध फैलाते रहे।
कलकते में यह संगीत का एक ऐसा दौर था कि यहाँ के होटलों और नाईट क्लब्स में बड़े नामी कलाकार काम कर रहे थे। मनोहरी भी कलकत्ता सिम्फनी आर्केस्ट्रा के साथ जुड़े रहने के अलावा एक नाईट क्लब ‘फिर्पो’ के साथ १९५८ तक काम करते रहे। यह वही समय था जब संगीतकार नौशाद ने मनोहरी और उनके साथ बासू चक्रवर्ती को एक कार्यक्रम में बजाते देखा और संगीतकार सलिल चौधरी को सलाह डी कि इन दोनों कलाकारों को बंबई ले आएं।
आखिर १९५८ में सलिल दा उन्हें बंबई ले गए। सलिल दा के पास उस समय बहुत काम न था सो उन्होंने संगीतकार एस.डी.बर्मन से मिलवाया। बर्मन दा ने उन्हें पहला मौक़ा दिया फिल्म ‘सितारों से आगे’ में।
बर्मन दा से पहली मुलाक़ात के समय ही मनोहारी दा की उनके बेटे आर.डी.बर्मन उर्फ़ पंचम से भी मुलाक़ात हो गई। जिस समय सलिल दा मनोहारी को लेकर बाम्बे लैब पहुंचे जहां ‘सितारों से आगे’ की रिकार्डिंग हो रही थी, तो वहां पंचम, जयदेव, और लक्ष्मीकांत भी मौजूद थे।
लक्ष्मीकांत उस समय बतौर साज़िन्दा मेंडोलिन बजाते थे और जयदेव बर्मन दा के सहायक थे।
मनोहारी की यहाँ से जो दोस्ती और मोहब्बत का रिश्ता बना वो तमाम उम्र बना रहा। ‘छोटे नवाब’ से लेकर पंचम की आख़िरी चर्चित फिल्म ‘१९४२ अ लव स्टोरी’ तक। आप में से जिसने भी इन्डियन आइडल ५ वाला शो देखा होगा कि किस तरह आर.डी.बर्मन के ज़िक्र भर से दादा भावुक हो उठे थे। आर.डी.बर्मन की शख्सियत का यही कमाल है कि उनके साथ काम करने वाले भाग्यशाली लोगों की तो छोड़ दें, हम जैसे सिर्फ उनके गीत-संगीत से उन्हें जानने वाले भी आज तक उनकी दीवानगी से बाहर नहीं आ पाए हैं। बल्कि सच तो यह है कि ज्यों-ज्यों वक़्त गुज़रता है त्यों-त्यों यह दीवानगी बड़ती ही जाती है।
मनोहारी सिंह ने लगभग सारे बड़े संगीतकारों के साथ काम किया। जैसा कि शरू में जो मैंने गीत गिनाए थे, यह बात उसी से ज़ाहिर हो जाती है। अब जैसे मदन मोहन जी के साथ ‘वो कौन थी’ के अलावा मेरी यादाश्त से फिल्म ‘हकीकत’ के मस्ती भरे गीत ‘मस्ती में छेड़ के तराना कोइ दिल का, आज लुटाएगा खज़ाना कोइ दिल का’ में सेक्साफोन और ‘हंसते ज़ख्म’ में ‘तुम जो मिल गए हो’ में की फ्ल्यूट बजाया है।
शंकर-जयकिशन ने ‘ब्रहमचारी’ और ‘आरजू’ के अलावा फिल्म ‘प्रोफ़ेसर’ में क्या कमाल का पीस ‘आवाज़ दे के हमें तुम बुलाओ, मोहब्बत में इतना न हमको सताओ’ में बजाया है कि गीत याद करो तो बोलों से ज़्यादा सेक्साफोन की लहराती-बलखाती धुन ज़हन में गूजती रह जाती है।
इसी तरह मनोहारी दादा ने एक बार दुबई में बसे मेरे अदभुत संगीत प्रेमी मित्र डाक्टर चंद्रशेखर से कहा था कि उनके साज़ का सबसे अदभुत इस्तेमाल प्यारेलाल (लक्ष्मीकांत प्यारेलाल) ने फिल्म ‘अमीर गरीब’ के गीत ‘मैं आया हूँ ले के साज़ हाथों में’ में किया है। वाह! सचमुच अगर किसी को इस साज़ की गहराई और छिपी हुई ध्वनियों को जानना हो तो इसे सुनना चाहिए।
इसका मतलब यह नहीं कि फिल्म ‘गाईड’ के ‘तेरे मेरे सपने अब एक रंग हैं’ में बजाया गया टुकड़ा कुछ कमतर है। आप ज़रा गौर से सुनकर देखें कैसे सेक्साफोन धीमे से ‘मेरे तेरे दिल का, तय था इक दिन मिलना / जैसे बहार आने पर तय है फूल का खिलना’ जैसी पंक्तियों को शब्द की परछाईं बनकररूह अत्ता करता है। या फिर अंतरे में बिना शब्द सारे माहौल को बयान करना। पूरे के पूरे गीत में ही सेक्साफोन आत्मा की तरह प्रवाहित होता है।
ओ.पी.नैयर साहब के लिए तो उन्होंने ‘है दुनिया उसी की’ में दुःख को ऐसा सांगीतिक एक्सप्रेशन दिया है मानो दुःख भी इस दुःख से तड़प उठा हो।
कितने-कितने बेमिसाल गीत हैं और क्या-क्या उसमें कलाकारी हुई है। अब जैसे जयपुर में बसे मेरे संगीत प्रेमी मित्र पवन झा ने आज ही मुझे एक किस्सा सुनाया। फिल्म ‘माया’ में सलिल दा ने एक गीत रचा है ‘जा रे, जा रे उड़ जा रे पंछी’। इस गीत की शुरूआत की फ्ल्यूट के स्वरों से होती है और कुछ सेकण्ड बाद ही सेक्साफोन आ जाता है। उस दिन रिकार्डिंग के लिए एक साजिन्दे के न आने की वजह से सलिल दा ने यह दोनों साज़ मनोहारी दा को बजाने की जिमेदारी सौंपी। फ्ल्यूट जितनी हल्की-फुल्की, सेक्साफोन उतनी ही भारी लेकिन कुछ देर के रियाज़ के बाद ही इस काम मनोहारी सिंह ने बखूबी कर दिखाया।
आर.डी.बर्मन तो एक ऐसी चीज़ थे जो हर काम को अपने अलग अंदाज़ से करने के आदी थे। मनोहारी सिंह से लोग फ्ल्यूट और सेक्साफोन बजवाते थे लेकिन आर.डी। ने उनसे सीटी भी बजवाई। फिल्म ‘कटी पतंग’ के गीत ‘ये शाम मस्तानी, मदहोश किए जाय’ की सीटी याद हैं न ? इसी तरह फिल्म ‘प्यार का मौसम’ में बजवाया मेंडोलिन। ज़रा याद कीजिए ‘तुम बिन जाऊं कहाँ, कि दुनिया में आ के , कुछ न फिर चाहा सनम, तुमको चाह के’। मोहम्मद रफ़ी वाला वर्शन सुन लें। मज़ा आ जाएगा। एक ऐसा साज़ जिसके उस्ताद हुए या तो महान संगीतकार सज्जाद और उसके बाद लक्ष्मीकांत, उसे मनोहारी दा ने क्या बजाया है।
एक और बात। मनोहारी दा ने अपने दोस्त और आर.डी.बर्मन के दूसरे सहयोगी बासू चक्रवर्ती के साथ मिलकर कुछ फिल्मों में संगीत भी दिया। १९७६ में महमूद की ‘सबसे बड़ा रुपैया’ में ‘ना बीबी न बच्चा, न बाप बड़ा ना मैया’, ‘दरिया किनारे इक बंगलो’ और ‘बही जइयो ना रानी बही जइयो ना’ तो अब तक याद है न। इसके अलावा ‘चटपटी’ (८१) और ८३ में ‘कन्हैया’ बासू-मनोहारी की इस जोड़ी ने दी।
क्या-क्या याद करूं ? अब तो हर दिन ही सिर्फ याद करना है। जब-जब कोई गीत बजेगा, कान बेसब्री से उस साज़ का इंतज़ार करेंगे जिनसे मनोहारी दा की आवाज़ सुनाई देगी।
और..
१३ जुलाई २०१० को जब मनोहारी दा की म्रत्यु हुई उस समय उनकी उम्र ७९ साल की थी। मगर कमाल यह है कि उन्होंने अपनी तमाम उम्र में कभी बजाना नहीं छोड़ा। २००३ की फिल्म ‘चलते-चलते’ के लिए भी बजाया तो २००४ की फिल्म ‘वीर जारा’ में भी बजाया।
म्रत्यु से कुछ दिन पहले ही उन्होंने संगीतकार शंकर-जयकिशन की स्मृति में आयोजित एक कार्यक्रम में बाकायदा परफार्मेंस दिया था। ऐसे जीवट के महान संगीतकार को सौ-सौ सलाम।
और हाँ। अब आपको भी सलाम। मतलब अगले हफ्ते तक की जय-जय।

I haven't heard anyone so easy, so smooth, so perfect, so effortless while rendering Hindi film songs on this wind instrument other than Manohari Singhji. Equally wonderful are the other orchestra members who complemented him. They look so down to earth, without any vanity. Real gems.

what is most saddening is that some of his team members who were Great in their own right have either left the world or have retired into oblivion...I think the main player here..Shri Manohari Singhji expired in 2010...Mr. Bhanu Gupta and Kersi Lord are also retired..Loius Banks is not to be heard of anywhere...While watching the serial Karamchand on DD during mid and late 80s I first time saw the name of Loius Banks..didnt know then that he was also a prominent member of Great Pancham's team. Was fortunate to see Mr. Kersi Lord from distance in Yashwant Auditorium (Matunga Road) on Sept. 3 while watching a programme ' flutes of Pancham' by Dr. Dewal and his team.....although Shri Kersi Lord came there only as a viewer and watched the show feom his feont row seat..

all the musicians were so good, I wish the camera work (and editing / mixing) was as good - but of course Manohari Singh (even at this age) was fantastic .. loved it

Music Director along with Basuda & great Maruti Rao. These extraordinary talented combine has created 100s of immortal music with Panchamda.

These are the sort of concerts that can really perk you up after a hard days work!! Wonderful co-ordination and team work, of course with the remarkable genius of Pancham Da. Manohari Singh as usual excels and the Flute recitals is also superb...if the recorded session is so good, I just wonder what an experience it would have been to attend this concert live....Sheer listening pleasure....thanks a lot :-)
