If a band like Cave In can go from mathy metalcore on their first releases to spaced out alt rock and then back again, all without changing their name, Ceremony can too. Who cares if it "confuses new fans"? It may seem crazy, but those new fans might actually end up enjoying the band's entire discography or discover an entire sub-genre they'd never been exposed to! Let these guys do whatever the hell they want, so long as they believe in it, which they obviously do.

do you guys realize where the title of their bands name is inspired from? can not believe you guys didn't see this coming. from the first album to their most recent, these guys know how to do music and i love the hardcore punk and the new wave/ post goth songs they are producing just the same. this band is not a label or a brand they are organic like a living organism that will continue to change and grow, express emotion and have triumphs and failures just like and human being. so if your looking for a stagnant hardcore punk band where you can rely on it to churn out what you except every time like a cog to the machine Ceremony isn't for you. Ceremony is alive.

Same here, I fell in love with Violence and I appreciate so much their hardcore work but as a musician you can't do heavy stuff and screams all your life, punk is always a good beginning but as time passes you feel the need to grow, to look for more complex sounds and textures even if it takes changing your musical genre. I always thought about them as a punk version of The Smiths and now they're definitely heading that direction. I totally support this new stage.

Love how I can go through Ceremony's discography and not listen to the same sounding album twice. People do need to remember that the 1st wave of hardcore was happening at the same time that the o.g post punk stuff was coming out too and then certainly, mutually, into the early- mid '80s. Hardcore sorta latched on to more metal influences going into the early 90s, which some bands, like the 1st wave pv'ers had slightly allowed into their sound but also yielded to noise/ambience and noise/ambience has always been a mainstay with post-punk bands and other sorts of sub-genres that kept the more so mid-tempo/ slower sound paired with 'emotional/chthonic' themes that became goth, death rock, dark wave, neo folk, various sub sub genres of industrial. I don't see where Ceremony's sound is "sounding like" in this music video to be too much of a veering off point from their o.g sound. I mean, they covered Red C! Their heads were always in an anachronistic place from the get-go.

  • @mardmu

So stoked on this! Love everything from violence violence right up to this. No one can deny that these new albums Ceremony has been putting out are far from being as groundbreaking and memorable as those of their earlier hardcore days. This is hipster nonsense. It's going to phase out just like Title Fight's new sound will. I can't even remember what i just listened to in this video. Ceremony's shows were so personal, energetic, and engaging. Seems like with every tour that passes they become more and more detached from the fans. I don't like it. I can't control it, so oh well. I'll always remember Ceremony as the hardcore band not the pretentious garbage they're playing now. Cheers if you like it though. At least it shows they haven't totally fallen off.

Jacob Sever i think they are a genre band changing to punk in one album and then post punk on the other one

Playing the same stuff record after record is boring. I respect that they're willing to try different things and honestly the second half of the record really isn't a huge departure from Zoo. Great band, ballsy.

It is so crazy how a band can change so much. I don't know if I am angry with this or just disappointed.

Huge fan of Ceremony, one of my favorite bands. I prefer their older work, it's what got me into the band. I feel like they should've changed the band's name with Zoo. Hell, there's already another Ceremony that is a shoegaze band. The core members stayed the same but the sound is so different especially with these songs. I'm sure first time listeners would never believe it's the same band who put up Ruined, Violence Violence, etc... Change is good but when it's that drastic, might as well go all out. That way, they'll play only songs they really want to. The new songs sound good but they lack a bit of lasting appeal and uniqueness imo. I am still very excited to hear the whole thing. Some people mentioned Title Fight. I gotta admit I really like the new record but again I felt like something was missing. All I wanna say is I'm all about change but sometimes bands can't bring a spark in their new sound. Perhaps Zoo was only the transition and Ceremony's new record will define the direction of the band and find uniqueness in the same way they did amongst all the other hardcore bands at the time.

Kenerxxx I agree but PBTT haven't made as drastic a change with their sound over the years, especially considering how Old Pride and The Lack Long After are pretty much the same record

Nowheremovies I guess The Beatles should have changed their name too right?

It isn't immediately obvious? Your argument that they should change their name because their sound has evolved/changed immensely is bullshit.

I really wish they'd throw a few hardcore/punk tracks into the mix but I doubt that'll happen. I'll probably enjoy the new album at least a little bit though. Maybe the trend of heavy/punk bands completely redefining their sound and aesthetic by playing music like this is starting to run its course a little bit for me though.

Same thing happened in the late 70s punk bands went new wave or Gothic.. Check out bauhaus, talking heads, joy division etc

octavio gutierrez those bands didn't start out as hardcore punk acts though, they just started off doing that style. Ceremony went all the way from powerviolence to this style, quite the shift in dynamic

Christian Molander Well Joy Division was originally Warsaw. It had more of a punky feel. But yeah, trends just happen like that.

Christian Molander They totally didn't. You want to talk about a shift, listen to the first two Cure albums (Or any two Cure albums). Or compare Siouxsie and the Banshee's "Juju" album with their first album. Even John Lydon went from the Sex Pistols to PiL. The thing about quality punk bands is that they mature.

The only thing that really separates this from earlier Ceremony is these lyrics aren't meant to be a joke.

I can hear the Joy Division/The Smiths/The Mob, etc. influence in the sound of this album (Even from lack of hearing the whole album) but I enjoy the melancholy guitar, the somber voice, it is somehow familiar with those bands and different. For everyone saying that they are just copying Joy Division are probable people who found out about Joy Division somewhere around 2005 when Joy Division resurfaced because of the Emo scene.

I liked all their previous albums, Violence Violence, Rohnert Park, Zoo, etc. I always enjoyed the way they were heading. I even had some discussions with my friends trying to prove 'em that their way is much more interesting than making the same music for years. But this time... I'm still wating for the new LP, I'm still a fan, but this time I'm not sure if this might be called 'growth'. Nonetheless, Ceremony still knows how to surprise me. That's a good thing I suppose.
