My dear grandma used to sing this song to me in the 1940s . This scene , and particularly Robert Lindsay's contribution , which is astounding , is absolutely memorable !
I forgot how magnificent was Robert Lindsay in this role. My friends, Danny and Stephen, insisted that I see this show - even though I couldn't imagine that an old British musical from the 1930's could have such a strong impact. Later, I was surprised to see how much of the original score was maintained in this production. And what about Lindsay's breakout performance? It is a pity he did not do more musicals. Interesting to compare this with his London performance, also on RUclips.
Yes, that is James Earl Jones. This performance was from the 1987 Tony Awards Show. Jones is in the audience because he was nominated and eventually won that year's tony as best actor in the August Wilson play Fences.
I went to the Adelphi 4 times to see this with Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson. I bought the album...........Loved it every time I saw it or listened to the album. Have tried numerous times to find clips or the whole thing ......With THAT cast on RUclips. No luck. My kids have no idea how much they have missed out.
Oh yes, I tried that too bc I definitely wanted to see especially Emma and was very sad that I couldn't find anything at all...I'm only 20 now but I've always loved old musicals as this, My Fair Lady or the Sound of Music
Absolutely phantasmagorical, could listen to it over and over again. As for Robert Lindsay, is there no limit to his star studded talents, he is just too good.
My greatest regret is being unable to get tickets to see this in 1985. I have seen Robert Lindsay in other productions and he is always completely sublime. Truly remarkable entertainer. Right on from Wolfie. A star in the making in Citizen Smith.
I had the good fortune to see Lindsay when the tour came to LA. His performance that night was as if his whole career was riding on it. He gave 1000%. Just sublime. Everything's so mean spirited these days with the grievance/victimology culture, submerged in humorlessness. I miss those days.
robert has got to be one of the most talented actors i have ever had the pleasure to watch no matter what he is in he is incredible and so versatile i wish i could see him on stage
We've been reading our father's letters from WWII and I've been building a playlist of the many songs he and my mother mentioned. Wonderfully captures those times. Surprised to hear him mention this song in a March 1945 letter when he was just entering Germany. Learned the Nazis condemned the song. So great to have this opportunity to hear the song and see the "walk."
Peter Lushing It was. Goebbels once called the Lambeth Walk "animalistic hopping" at some point in the 30s. Probably because it was simply too cool for school.
+Clair DeLune It would be wonderful if you shared your playlist with others. Music from that time is plentiful, but to recognize that certain pieces were 'personal' to someone adds a different air to the listening.
You need to look up a satirical film which was made during WW II which clips of Nazi leaders and troops synced to the Lambeth Walk. They looked ridiculous, the best revenge. It is on RUclips somewhere.
Robert lindsay is a wonderful man . and a amazing actor i am watching him now in a show called the family ( in australia ) funny guy ...just nice to see him in this musical too .thanks you
Robert Lindsay put on an amazing performance, what a great guy. He does so much outside the theatre too, I once witnessed him give an entire DVD boxset of "My Family" to a terminally ill boy in hospital.
I am so lucky to have seen this in London at the Adelphi Theatre with my dad in 1985, with Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson. I will never forget it. At this number right before intermission, there was not a soul in the house not tapping their feet.
My nan was from lambeth, absolutely amazing lady, still is!!! Shes just started to learn to read and write, doing gcses soon(70 in october)! Proper south londoner like myself im so proud to be related to her absolute inspiration to me. im 19 knew the the lyrics as a littlun...every chas n dave song, lonnie etc. what you reckon tattoo on my arm saying "anytime your lambeth way etc etc..." opinons please????
I didn't see the Broadway version, but ever since I watched this as a child in my local Civic Light Opera - with Jamie Torcellini as Bill Snibson - it has been my favorite musical. No musical has ever topped it.
It JUST DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!!!! This is what absolutely brilliant professionals look like working at the top of their form - Walking on Clouds and Talking with God! Brilliant! You British are OK!!!! -- Bob
I went to school in Lambeth and we use to climb over the railings at lunch time and sneak out to the old fish and chip shop, which was on a street called Lambeth Walk, everytime we were down that way, we'd sing the song and do the dance :) So you obviously missed out the last time you were round our way :)
My parents sang us all the war songs too - WWI and WWII songs - I know them all as they sang them at bed time. I sang to my children too but not sure if the grandchildren will still be getting the same old songs in 2024!
I took my Mother to see this when the production came to L.A.. She was so home sick for England. For a couple of hours she was home. I still have the CD and I often play it.
This was such a great show. I still have the cast recording on vinyl. Even though its been many years, I remember this number very well. Thanks for posting
Even better the Macarena IMO :-). Thanks for the new Upstairs Downstairs for introducing me to the Lambuth Walk. The Duke of Kent's version (Episode #2.5) was hillarious!!
watching some WWII videos (I'm a history nerd) I found the legendary nazi-parody video, which lead me to this... I love it. It's a nice song about friendship and pride, and unity. And even when I'm not really good at theatre and musicals, I'm impressed in how they truly make me believe that this is a well executed "mess"... No one stops dancing or acting, and the lead actor (brilliant guy) moves around "everything damn he pleases"... Greetings from a latino in Canada!
Robert Lindsay is a brilliant actor. He was sensational in this musical, but he was also in a TV series by Alan Bleasdale called G. B. H. in 1991, for which he won a BAFTA as best actor.
The professional production of Me and My Girl also toured Australia and NZ in 1995 and was such a hit. Wow, this video gave me shivers! Bring it back!!!! Thanks for posting :)
The first time I heard this song was watching The Longest Day. The British soldiers on a glider heading to Pegasus Bridge sang the song to ease their nervousness of the battle they would soon encounter. It seems the song was popular at that time. The movie was shot at the actual bridge where the battle took place. Much of the movie was authentic about that battle and the larger Normandy invasion.
I saw this twice in London back in 1989 and I loved it. I don't know the name of the actor who played Bill Snibson at the time, but I preferred him to this guy. I also found this musical much better than "My Fair Lady" which touched on similar issues.
brill i saw this live years ago with Robert Lindsay and Emma Thompson, i got both to sign my album thanks for the upload. what great memories. p.s i still have the album
I used to see lots of BW shows in the 80s. I'm really sorry I never got to see this show. Robert Lindsay is super. What a difference to playing a Chiswick dentist.
@Ozymaddyas I wouldn't have been surprised to find out Hugh Laurie was indeed in this play. He's an incredible musician. actor and the man can sing. He's one of my favorite British actors.
To Lindsay Ramsbottom: I would love to see a new production of this show, with Charlie Stemp in the lead. He would kill it! And The Lambeth Walk would be a riot!
That's ME in the dark grey dress, holding her ears in the beginning... this was such a joyful production to work in!!! Anne-Marie Gerard
When was this recorded? I think it's early 90s my Mrs think it's 70s?
@@jessicaparsons8727 1987 Tonys. So many great memories of this show.
@Jessica Parsons Yay! I saw you at :17 - so awesome!
Wow!
That's so cool!
So touching to see James Earl Jones appearing star struck! Great moments in theatre. Bravo!
How have I never heard of Robert Lindsay?? He's amazing
Do you remember Wolfy Smith in Citizen Smith (Freedom For Tooting)?
My dear grandma used to sing this song to me in the 1940s . This scene , and particularly Robert Lindsay's contribution , which is astounding , is absolutely memorable !
My grandmother was born in Lambeth Walk in 1889, a mile or so from where Charley Chaplin was born a couple of months earlier.
Lucky enough to see THIS production on Broadway. Fun evening & Lindsay was marvelous

That performance took a lot of work to choreograph and execute. I'm mesmerized!!
Absolutely phantasmagorical, could listen to it over and over again. As for Robert Lindsay, is there no limit to his star studded talents, he is just too good.
What about Tim Curry?
He's very talented too!

I saw this play in London in 1988. Its a SUPER play. I love this guy. He is awesome!

My greatest regret is being unable to get tickets to see this in 1985. I have seen Robert Lindsay in other productions and he is always completely sublime. Truly remarkable entertainer. Right on from Wolfie. A star in the making in Citizen Smith.
I remember my Grandpa requesting this song for me on the radio for my 6th birthday because I was so obsessed by it!
Robert Lindsay was a really good performer. Could do it all.
He still is!
the smiling man in the audience, is it james earl jones? he looks like him

I own this DVD and it's amazing. I love how Robert Lindsay talks to James Earl Jones in the aisle.
Robert Lindsay is such a effortless natural performer.
