The coverage stated that Soper had beaten DJ at Bathurst the previous year. While that was true 'on the road' the Eggenberger Sierras were both excluded for wheel arch infringements. This gave Peter Brock his 9th win at Bathurst.
Andy Rouse and his team and the Eggenberger team a total class part. DJ turns up aiming to humiliate the Europeans - you only have to see Steve Soper's reaction to see what the pitlane thought. 32 years this win still makes me happy.
as an american thank you for uploading these old vids of european motorsport, the passion just seemed so pure back then, do current british motorsport media provide such excellent commentary?
Great pity that the DJR car had a faulty waterpump other wise it would have walked away with the race as it did so many times in Australia. Those claiming its not the waterpump fault and a cheat based trick to avoid scrutiny should try to explain why there is such clear evidence of a boiling motor. The car would have been subjected to protests by Rouse and Eggengerger after practice if they thought it was an illegal car in any way. Dick Johnson built strong engines!
You all probably dont give a damn but does any of you know of a trick to get back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost the login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me.
To the best of my knowledge, the BBC did not show any substantial footage of any of the earlier Group A Silverstone TT races. If they did show the races, I don't have them on tape.
I was there for the event, and unlike the interviewer I knew how good the DJR cars were. So I was not surprised at the speed of Johnson and Bowe. I was sad to see the car run into problems, but the message was loud and clear! And that it was dry, unlike the year before was a bonus. It can rain heavily at Silverstone in summer..... :>)
Great clip, thank you. Those Sierras were busy, the in car of Rouse told it all.Johnson reckons he used to run the engines in without a turbo on the dyno which produced 90 hp ! With turbo @2.4 bar of boost they were 680 hp !! Please do not put any more clips up with that many Fords in front of the Holdens !! Thanks again.
The Aussie touring cars were all pretty illegal, look at the Gibson GTR for example. Rouse used to section the turbos and add or remove material to make it flow more. DJR probably ran T61 internals, the waterpump failure was definitely a hoax to avoid the scrutineers inspecting too hard.
Luther Blisset pretty illegal? what a rubbish statement, illegal how? The Gibson GTR's and DJR's Sierra's were just the best turing cars in the world plain and simple.
What a load of rubbish regarding a hoax to avoid the scrutineers. Did you not see the water boiling from the overflow and the temperature gauge ?? Australians build the best touring cars in the world and this video proved how quick we can get the cars to go. Dick kept the car going only to fall back with the engine boiling. A lot also has to do with car set up. Ibet if there was an in-car camera, you would find that Dick and JB simply drove the cars smoother...
I had a couple of hot laps with Dick in that Sierra at Sandown Raceway in Melbourne, Australia around this time. The Sierra was doing 167mph up the back straight. Incredible!
Lucky bugger!.... love watching dj and jb on old vids in the ATTC and bathurst we in the UK used to get a small amount of coverage of the great race when it was the holdens v the sierras..and GTRs.....dicks car was just the fastest sierra here...if the water pump had not given up...what a unbelievable race we would have had with him and rouse....excellent!
Stuart turner told us to radio Andy not to win , but he was ignored. Ferte gave his TT cup to Andy’s chief mechanic Clive Wilcox and it was behind the bar of the Builders arms in leamington spa. Auto sport ran a cartoon the following week « et tu Ford » Rudi eggenberger shook all of our hands and congratulated us as being the best team after the brands win.great times.
That's much appreciated information about what was happening behind the scenes. Of course such stories were not made public at the time. Agreed about those days, I think the FIA should not have cancelled the ETCC so abruptly.
were these two races 1987/88 the only two ETCC/WTCC TT races shown by the BBC and/or did they show 1983/1984/1985 and 1986 races in this extended highlight form
The highest quality touring car race cars ever - top factory teams from all over the world - works entries from many countries. Rouse and Eggenberger knew how much max power could get the Sierras to finish the 500klms .

So many legends of Australian motorsport ❤️🇦🇺🦘

Historical accuracy, BBC style; cannot get a thing a single bit right - I used to watch that as a kid
Used to love watching this on TV back then. All we get now is sodding footbal.
Great race, remember watching this when it was shown to tv 👍

In a word - yes. Commentary is normally kept to an intelligent, factual and understated minimum. The footage should provide all of the excitement....
Well this didn’t age well, unfortunately.
Dick Johnson - legend if only for the name.
I could watch that all day

JJ Mac wow
Meaning??
Dick really has big balls
Jason Paul with a name like dick Johnson ! You would need a set of bowling balls to match! In the U.S.A they would love his name.

"We convicts can do anything", LOL
Except reliability, obviously.
@@teabagmcpick889 yeah they were actually very reliable ... can't win everything.
@@KenOath1234 Did you actually watch the video?
@@teabagmcpick889 yep but had to ffwd a lot as couldnt understand a word they were saying!
@@teabagmcpick889 Johnson’s won more races than you’ve had hot dinners no doubt.
As good as motor racing ever gets. Both the racing and the technical side
Montego Turbo Pacecar, love it

Superb! Thanks for posting. I recorded this on tape, but wiped it out.
"We convicts can do anything" hahaha good old Dick!

The T04E cannot flow enough air to prodicuce 680hp unless using illegal fuel.

jaysee83 No one's saying DJR's wernt the dogs danglies, they were. Better rollcage than the rouse cars, although Andy bent the rules big time himself.

CORRECTION: the Eggenberger Sierras only provisionally finished 1st & 2nd at Bathurst in 1987 as they were subsequently disqualified.
