I feel like if you have actually read the whole book, you would know that it was far from shading the other 8 members but rather a sad tale of how the industry and company pitted the girls against each other. For every time an “antagonist” (e.g. Lizzie, Mina) did something, she would further elaborate why and how it could’ve made them react or felt that way. And I’m quite sure all of us who have actually read the whole thing can make out which events actually did happen. It’s just a sad book, really. I think there's a grain of truth in her book, but it's not everything we need to know to make a conclusions about that situation. There definitely was some kind of conflict between the members, but we can't be sure of who's right and who's wrong. At least we should know another side of the story to make an opinion and shouldn't spread the rumors based on fictional story.

Yeah, you know as much as I’m a fan of SNSD, they’re all just human beings with their own problems and flaws. It wouldn’t be surprising if their personalities didn’t mesh that well for a long time before the split. And it doesn’t have to be the fault of any one of them. I don’t blame Jessica for wanting to tell her story but ultimately I can’t really trust her to give a fully unbiased version of the events. It’s possible that everything in the book did happen but she left out other stuff that would make her look a little less innocent.

As a longtime fan of SNSD, it's really heartbreaking for me to be left in the dark about what transpired between them back in 2014. It felt like they made their decisions and we were forced to swallow the results back then that led fans and non-fans alike to create their own speculations. It's also weird for me that SM just let their biggest group at that time (if not counting EXO, who has already garnered huge following but also has gone through a problem in May that year and in October days after 9/30) be drag into a scandal like that. In terms of activities, I do not know what activities they were saying Jessica missed back then because I remember TTS promoting Holler, Sooyoung with her drama, and the news that they all renewed their contracts with SM, I guess we'll never know. But things have changed, I still long for the day that I will be able to see them standing together in one frame but right now, I am happy and contented that they are still active in the industry and are doing the things they love. No matter what, my support for these 9 girls will remain.

It's very sad that a SHINee member passed away, but SM is running mental counseling. care is being taken Other than that, I can't control people's minds! Foreigners only know a part of it and spread it, so they don't know it well, so they unconditionally blame SM. It's already imprinted, so whatever they do, it's their fault. For example, SM is so big and influential and there are many artists, so it is more exposed to the public and becomes a hot topic, but rumors are generated and people are hurt by what they say. At that time I remember feeling very confused about the departure. I thought that it was Jessica's choice. Little did I knew that SM where so vicious with her and her private life as well as with the rest of the members. It took me literally zero seconds to realise that Jessica was choosing freedom. She was betrayed by the members who could benefit from her leaving and those who didn't dare to speak out for her. Under those circumstances, I would choose to leave too. No one was loyal with no one. They blame her for choosing her before anything but any other would have done the same in her spot. I'm glad Jessica is doing good.

  • @synovelle
    @synovelle 2 года назад +1893

EDIT: Y'all, just because I think SM isn't a great company doesn't mean I think all other companies are perfect goody-goody-gumdrops from Heaven. Obviously, other companies with bad behavior exist, don't nitpick my comment just because you think SM is "better". The only thing SM, along with some other sucky companies, are "better" at is tricking people into thinking they're good and care for their idols for anything other than money. That's why people get kicked from companies when they didn't actually do anything wrong, it's because the companies lose money or don't benefit from the artists and decide to get rid of them so they can focus on the artists that do make them money. Can't believe I have to clarify this.
This is why, no matter how many great artists come from SM and how many good things they might do, I can't trust or respect SM as a management company. I'm so glad that Jessica has found a great loophole to express her thoughts, feelings, and her perspective of what happened. I know Jessica says it's pure fiction, buuuuut as you said, it's likely just to save face and stay within the legal limits.

Thank goodness there are screenshots of it, you should look it up. That actually explains why SM didn't go for Jessica's throat publicly like they did with CBX with the lawsuit and all.
The article would've forced SM and SNSD to go under fire but sadly SM paid Dispatch enough for them to substitute it with the one were supposed insiders justified Jessica being outed. Just Mad respect for SNSD's current members for staying quiet. We never heard anything from them. I know it pains to keep quiet when people accused you and your old member making shady hints and all before but the members esp taeyon really didnt put the pressure to make statement about what happened. After all these years, SNSD remained professional. Even after Seohyun, Sooyoung and tiffany left, they still respected the privacy of all the members including jessica. There were times I pity jessica but I realized, we dont know the whole history. It's 8 vs 1 and we are not kids anymore to take 1 side only. All 9 members are doing great right now so this scandal will never ruin the remaining members. They are even more succesful than they were before doing their own activities. I guess SNSD's reputation is really solid that scandals like this can never tear them.

OT8 not saying anything also could be because of the label value. SNSD has value that they can profit from. If one of the members gets in trouble, that decreases the value. For that reason companies and members try to keep away from talking about anything scandalous. OT9 will ALWAYS be SNSD and I find it weird that Jessica speaks about what happened on 9/30 considering it also affects the profit that she makes from being associated to that label and because what she's telling damages SNSD.

Don't forget that in every situation, there are multiple sides. In this case, (1) Jessica, (2) SNSD, (3) SM, and (4) the Truth.
We also should not take her book as completely her side. It's still a book and it needs to sell. So there might be exaggeration to hype up the conflicts.
We also need to remember who made the final decision, SM. Remember, at the end of the day, SM is a business and their end game is to make money. They had two choice. (1) keep Jessica and suffer a scandal that could damage SNSD's reputation which would lead to money loss (2) take the risk of kicking out their most popular member which could also damage SNSD's reputation and money loss. They would obviously pick the less risky choice and for them to pick the latter means Jessica staying was a higher risk for SM

    • @brianlittrell797

SM made the wrong choice. They miscalculated and lost a lot of money because of it. SM would have made A LOT more money if they kept Jessica. Even if a scandal did surface. Idols and companies survive scandals all the time and bounce back. Often times because they are able to manage the scandal in a clever way. But when you lose one or more very popular members you are going to lose considerable money. Especially if it is a group like SNSD and a member like Jessica. SM also made the morally wrong decision. Which is typical of SM and companies.

@@brianlittrell797 All parties in this situation have made a wrong choice. We know SM groups have had issues with each, even to the point of physical fights (Leeteuk- Heechul/Minho/Key) but that never resulted in a member being kicked out. So for SNSD to have just come off the success of Mr Mr, getting ready for a Japanese comeback, Tokyo Dome concert, and Asia tour (basically still at the peak of their career), and SM still decided to kick Jessica out means something. They decided the loss of money from Jessica leaving & the potential loss of SNSD's career wasn't as significant as Jessica staying. So, Jessica had to have done something irrevocable for SM to make that final call and it most likely wasn't her fashion pursuit since she'd claimed they supported it up until she was kicked out.

When Jessica refused to choose I think SM decided to just fire her. Which sounds petty and spiteful but I think SM is capable of being petty and spiteful. One thing seems clear, Jessica did something that pissed off SM which is why they not only fired her from the group but banned/blacklisted her. I think SM did the wrong thing because they have a reputation of behaving in a very questionable way and they seem morally lacking and deceptive.

I mean after all they spend only God knows how many years being together as a group and the good memories GG members had with her might be that one reason why they need to stay silent. I mean imagine all GG members saying their side stories and guess what's gonna happen next?? Medias, fans from both sides and non-fans will started to speculate things and everything is going to be worse and things will never go back to how it used to be. This is the most sane take ive seen. Ive read both books and you hit the nail on the head. I don't think many people see this side of the industry. They think because a group is successful that everyone inside it are magically happy. When in reality, even the most successful idols know eventually the group will no longer be their main source of income. Seeing the way Jessica was thriving and pushing to secure her future would definitely put some of them on edge especially if they felt she was being given preferential treatment with regards to her business ventures and dating scandals. Unfortunately this is due to how the industry is structured. It's been getting better but at the time some of the stuff she did was unprecedented and seemed like a bigger deal. Now it's normal for idols to have more freedom to pursue their individual career goals and even date. Back then it seemed SM protected Jessica and afforded her more opportunities which incited jealousy towards her. Which sucks because the company is only thinking about profits and not about the members' feelings. Everyone should have gotten the same chances but just because they didn't doesn't mean Jessica should be persecuted for what she got. It's a really unfortunate situation honestly.

I don't think it was personality, having worked with her for 9 years, they knew her measure. I don't think it was the time spent on non-SNSD stuff. I think it was money. It's always the money. The alleged "lack of devotion" displayed by Sica could very well have been monetary in nature, her refusing to pay out percentage points of (expected) B&E profits to people who weren't contributing design ideas (or anything else of value to the business) just because "SNSD made you popular, nobody would buy your shiz on its own merit". Especially after the initial deal to let her start had been struck. Jessica is within her right to say her side. The girls kicking her out and telling her the morning she was leaving was so wrong. Yes, Jessica had a boyfriend and a fashion label she was launching. The other girls had TaeTiSeo, dramas, and solos- And while the other members -ususally- wouldn't admit to dating publicly, they did date as well. Jessica should have been allowed to promote her own individual ventures the same as any other member.
And her book is telling her truth, not "shading GG". If you watched her bawl her eyes out on stage on Sisters Who Make Waves while reading a letter to her fans and mourning spending her 15 year debut alone as all of her "sisters" came back with an album without her pretending she never existed... Those tears were genuine. I definitely question the other girls. As much as I love them it took a very long time for me to be able to support them again- Especially Taeyeon. yeah, this was confusing me too. after thinking about it, i think there are a few major ish differences:
      1) compared to other members' activities: acting, singing, musicals, radio shows, and variety shows are all activities that the members would still do as idols, affiliated with snsd, in order to attract interest in the group. they're all activities that idols traditionally do. fashion doesn't have the same publicity - it would be more of a passion project, and not really linked to snsd at all (e.g. you mentioned you weren't even aware of it). not that she shouldn't have been able to pursue it anyway though
      2) compared to other kpop idols with fashion lines: i'm thinking of baekhyun and donghae, because they're also with sm. for baekhyun he's somewhat less involved, i.e. co-creative director who doesn't also happen to be dating the ceo, and he launched it while exo was not very active. donghae also launched his brand wayyy past suju's prime. whereas jessica is the primary creative director of blanc and eclare, would have been extremely busy while snsd was still at their most popular, and is dating tyler kwon lol. i wonder if it also makes a difference that blanc and eclare is a luxury brand, while the other two are streetwear.
(i think these 2 are the main points - their super popular lead vocal would be too busy with sth that didn't promote snsd at a time when snsd wanted max promotion)
      3) tyler kwon as the ceo also probably changed things. not only was jessica dating him, but his reputation isn't the best, and if the marriage rumours were true that would have complicated things further
but this is ofc just speculation (i have time, so). i mean, it clearly was a big deal for some reason, although i agree that for this kind of catastrophic result there was probably some deeper long term tension

Guys, just because they are a girl group don’t mean they need to be super besties or forever friends. I mean, even if among the members there are conflicts its more than normal because we are humans. People are different and when worked together there will be disputes and emotions. Take it with a pinch of salt. The book is written from her lens and no one knows the other side. The same truth can be vastly different in different perspective and angle. I had the most toxic colleague that stirred shit and twisted facts to other people. The things she said were factual but she take things out of context and skipped all the part where she is in fault. And suddenly people think she was an angel and the other side is the bad guy.
Not saying Jessica is the bad guy, though her shading SNSD does leave a bad taste, just saying there are different perspectives and both can be right and not at fault. (If it isn’t clear enough, that’s my own opinion is that she is shading. You can form your own opinion whether its shading or not. That’s not my main point.)
I think we are all mature and old enough to know its normal.
SNSD let them live as the legacy please. Don’t let these things ruin the beautiful memories.
I am not an SNSD stan but I been to see through their legend that brought Kpop out to Asia and all. The whole Jessica leaving the group has already caused them a lot of discomfort to all involved then. Really don’t need to dig out again.

I prefer just don’t cause of her position many haters are waiting to feed on rumours and will take things out of context. Well that’s my personal opinion.
But my main point is I have seen so much comments that defended on the grounds that oh they are all very close and all. They cannot be… it must all be the company fault. So many people spoke about normalising Idol not being perfect. I hope we can all remember they are humans and if indeed there is conflicts. Its fine. They don’t have to be besties to be legends or a good group. Paints an unrealistic image. I used to be like those awww they are all super close any conflicts are rumours or hating on them. But when I grew up and went through things, these are normal.
Not saying it is true but even if it is true. It should not shaken their legacy or anyone involved.

So, it wasn't her choice to leave the group, she was not a betrayer like the media/knetz portrayed her to be.
And just to be clear, the other members has shaded Jessica multiple times in the past. Even the group leader dismissed Jessica existence during their training years, so it's both side. @aheedle 2 года назад +219

I used to support Jessica, and maybe I still do a little bit, but I am incredibly upset with her. Here is why:
This book is LOOSELY based on the real experiences of Jessica, so some of it may be true/based on true experiences, some of it may be false. However, I want you all to listen to this quote from a TIME magazine article about Jessica's book:
"But Jung says it’s up to the reader to decide the line between fact and fiction. “It’s going to be like an Easter egg hunt,” she tells TIME. “Looking for clues and who’s who, what’s what, what’s true, what’s not.”
This quote makes me so angry. For Jessica to say this, it is so disgusting. Here is why:
    1) YA books, as many of you may know, are often exaggerated and blown up to be more dramatic, because that entices many young readers into wanting to read because, "Waa! Scandalous! Betrayal! Blablabla!"- You get it.
However, in this book it is theorised that certain characters are certain members of Girls' Generation, especially the two main villains, Lizzie and Mina. In SHINE, the character Mina drugs Rachel, the main character (who is based on Jessica). Obviously, this is a criminal act, and absolutely terrible.
But don't you guys see? Jessica wants the readers to decide whether this actually happened. She is essentially letting people decide whether a member of SNSD actually drugged her, when it could be entirely false. Look at Twitter, they are hating on two specific members of SNSD, because they think that the characters Lizzie and Mina are based on them. But we don't even know if all the bad things the characters did ACTUALLY happened to Jessica. But she's happy with letting two people who could be potentially innocent get hate for no reason?! She isn't saying they bullied her, she's portraying "Mina" as a CRIMINAL. Listen, maybe the SNSD member who Mina is based on actually drugged her, but Jessica being cryptic about it is not good. She needs to be honest about what is fiction and what is reality, otherwise she could be potentially defaming innocent people for no reason. That is absolutely disgusting, and I am so disappointed in her. Look at the members of SNSD getting hate for something that could potentially be fiction! And Jessica is just letting it happen.
    2) REMOVED DUE TO FALSE INFORMATION!
    3) In this book, Jessica's character Rachel decides that certain characters slept their way into the group, as in, sleeping with the higher-ups. She basically sl*t-shames them in her head, but you have to remember that the characters in this girl-group are all minors, just like Rachel (Jessica). So instead of talking about how a bunch of adults took advantage of minors under the guise of letting them pursue their dreams, Rachel (Jessica) shames them for "sleeping their way into the group", when really, we should be pitying them as they are basically victims of statutory r*pe! But no, Rachel (Jessica's character) thinks it's perfectly okay to shame them in her head. Jessica, how could do that? You should know that when minors sleep with adults, it's up to the adults to say "No!" instead of taking advantage of innocent kids who just want to pursue their dreams. Why is she shaming the members who "slept their way" into the book, when it's not their fault?
And hey, this might be true, it might be false, but we don't know, because Jessica is being cryptic.
Of course, Jessica is allowed to tell her side of the story, but for the past eight years, that is all she has done. The only people who haven't shared their story are the rest of SNSD. Also, she shouldn't tell her story in a cryptic, partially-fictional way, where everything is "loosely" based on the truth, and wrapped in multitudes of dramatic YA story-telling. Jessica shouldn't be painting (potentially innocent) people as criminals, and outing (potentially straight) people. That is super disgusting of her.
Also, Jessica portrays herself as some innocent angel in this book, but I doubt that is true. She probably did some wrong things too, and so did the rest of the girls.
Edit: If I have gotten anything wrong, or have spread misinformation, please let me know.
Edit 2: It has come to my attention that there is no, in fact, mention of the maknae being a lesbian and that this was a false rumour that many people believed, including myself. I am really sorry for spreading this false information! Regardless, my point still stands, but I will remove the point about her potentially outing anyone, as this was just a rumour, and I am very, very sorry for spreading this information. I stand by the rest of my comment, though.

There's no mystery here. The statements from SM and Jessica don't really contradict that much.
Jessica wanted to start a fashion line, and knew it would consume a lot of time. She waffled back and forth about whether or not she could remain a member of Girls' Generation. She was presented an ultimatum - one or the other. Her indecision left the company and group in limbo, and ultimately they made the decision for her because they needed a clear path forward. Jessica felt backstabbed because she had been with the group and company for years.
I'm a supervisor at my job. You want to accommodate your employees as much as you can, but you can't bend over backwards. If someone isn't meeting expectations, whether it's their attendance or quality of performance, you sometimes have to let them go - even if you like them personally. And it really sucks.
    It's business, not personal.

    • @Mr_DPZ
      @Mr_DPZ 2 года назад +23

@Mihaela I forgot to mention that I'm a longtime SONE myself. I heard the rumors that she was going to be leaving before it happened and commiserated over the whole ordeal with the SNSD tumblrsphere while everything was unfolding.
SM did say that she could have her company if it didn't conflict with Girls' Generation's schedule, but that doesn't mean the negotiations were finalized. The fact of the matter is that running a business isn't just a full time job, it's an overtime job. In the mid-'00s, a lot of rappers and record labels created their own fashion lines, which were largely vanity projects - not taken seriously in the fashion world, quick to fold. Had Jessica remained with SNSD, that's what Blanc & Eclair would ultimately have ended up being.
If the story about the girls' parents is true, it still doesn't conflict anything else, and no one knows how much it would have actually influenced the decision anyway. It's not completely implausible, but there's a good dozen parents across the group (in other words, not a cohesive unit) and the notion that they're more business-minded and brand-conscious than SM is a stretch. I've always taken it with a grain of salt, just hearsay.
She filmed the original CMIYC video and was part of the initial Tokyo Dome preparations. Those are things that happened. Jessica also filmed the "Divine" video, which is rumored to have been (and very much feels like) her farewell.
The one thing I don't remember ever hearing anything about is her getting kicked out of any fan events - that would have received a lot of publicity.

I agree it was business, but not on the time aspect. Money. Follow the money. My theory: She struck a deal with management (particularly at the C level), and then somebody else (maybe member individual management [usually also their family]) started demanding a piece of the action (or a bigger-then-agreed-upon piece), and Sica told them to pound sand. Not "giving back" out of expected profits could be construed as the "insufficient devotion to the group" cited from SM's side. Sica would quite possibly regard it as paying tribute to 8 leeches who weren't contributing anything to her design vision (or her bottom line). OK "leeches" is harsh, but it would be a severe financial drain on an already-shaky startup.

Appreciate your comment for focusing on the arrangements and what made it difficult to move forward with what was arranged. It's a business, and a business where individual personalities, image and perceptions matter so much. Nothing happened out of the blue.

as a sone (15yrs and counting) jessica departure was one of the most devastating experience ever happened to sones. but look at in a professional’s perspective. Jessica has her own line, which resulted in limited brands/advertisements reach out to other members. I think this is not fair for the other 8 members because every brand wanted to be exclusive when they signed a contract, since jessica has her own line of fashion, it will definitely effect other members’ opportunities as well. i’m pretty sure the schedules need to be adjusted, sometimes dance choreography need to be adjusted from 9 members to 8 members. Having your own fashion line is another job! it’s much much more. I am still supporting Jessica (she is one of my bias), and 8 members of snsd. But from my perspective, Jessica can only do one or the other. :( sad but that’s business

For your lack of information, first, SM not stupid to sign a contract and let her do her fashion if it's affect their money, second, SNSD did have some individual commercial for different brand, third Jessica launch her brand, even after she has her own beauty products, she still can sign with others and be their model. Sorry for my lack of English

This is the take on the situation I've never understood.
Other members can have acting gigs, variety, radio, sub units, solos, brand deals, etc., but Jessica can only have one job and needs to choose? What?
Others have tried to argue that those things increased SNSD's brand as a whole, but they never explain why Jessica being a successful designer wouldn't help SNSD's brand.
Also plenty of celebrities have their own brands and still take endorsements. Even if Jessica was limited in their deals, there was nothing to stop the other members from signing with brands. When was the last time ALL of SNSD had the same endorsements? They were certainly well past that at that point.
And there doesn't seem to be any documented missed public schedules. Maybe she missed some rehearsals, but it doesn't seem to have impacted the overall quality until she was suddenly out. Their reasons all around don't make sense.
I've reasoned (not that it holds any more water than any one else's guess) that it could only really be two things:
      A. They didn't like Jessica. This might or might not be justified, we don't see their attitude behind closed doors, but it seems they got fed up with her presence in the group and wanted her out. Perhaps they thought she might not resign her contract, and when she did that started the push to remove her.
      OR
      B. Jessica's relationship was real and was getting serious. They thought the scandal would damage the group and that led to them pushing her out. Now a days a group that size with that seniority of that age wouldn't really falter over a dating "scandal", but 2014 was a very different time...

When I saw 2ne1 back on stage at Coachella. I immediately imagined what if SNSD and Jessica were on the same stage and singing together again. I'm tired of all these rumors, I don't care about the truth anymore, as a fan who still loves the nine of them so much I hope everyone can move on and forget about this and return to the stage like 2ne1 did.

    • @stacyunnie23

2NE1 has a Freedom already. They can perform together because all of them left YG. But in the case of SNSD, 5 members is still under SM and the 3 members is still a member of SNSD. So it's really impossible to perform all members together in one stage. Unless all of them will petition to get back Jessica in the group.

As a SONE this situation will always be something that I know we’ll never know the full story, not without all the girls speaking. All I can say is that out of this situation it hurts to see Jessica and the rest of the girls not acknowledge each other publicly, I give SM the side eye b/c Jessica, one of the OG members of the nations girl group, was blacklisted. And my own opinion is that to me I think the other members were wrong to make her choose, if that was true, b/c if I was Jessica I would’ve showed them that I’m dedicated to the group. Not to mention that there’s more “benefit” of being in the group vs trying to go solo with a brand new clothing brand that just barely got off the ground.

SHINee spoke about this before openly and I think that is the ultimate truth. We as fans should never delude ourselves to thinking that they are always close. At the end of the day, if it’s true that the girls made Jessica choose the group or her branding, that is because GG is a business and a branding.

South Korean media throughout the years have almost completely sided with SNSD in this issue. You'd be suprised the amount of hate videos there is of Jessica in Korean. Over hundreds of naver articles (that usually don't get translated so many international fans aren't aware of them) hating on Jessica as well. Any explanation of this story from anyone involved would cause very bad press, which is something SM will do anything to avoid.
