    FYI a short corner is also awarded when an infraction committed by the defending team occurs. This includes but it not limited to hitting with the rounded side of the stick, ball being kicked, dangerous play etc.

    The video said you can only hit the ball with flat side of stick but in the video it showed players dribbling using both sides of the end of the stick.. I think you should be able to use any part of the stick to hit the ball personally.. also it says no shielding but I was watching a college game on tv and many players would position themselves with back to the defender

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  5 лет назад +2

      No, it doesn't. If you watch carefully, they rotate the stick so that they're controlling it both ways with only one side of the stick.

    Being Canadian, I watched over 100 hockey games per year since the late 80s, played with friends everyday outside all winter long on the ice and all summer long in the street or parking lots for my whole my childhood and teenage years. Yet those are the first images I have ever seen about field hockey, I knew it existed but here it’s completely unheard of. I find it really strange, in particular their sticks are so short, players need to bend in order to shoot! The gameplay and rules look like a mix of lacrosse and soccer more than ice hockey. Intriguing game.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  4 года назад +6

      Hi Henry McFadyen
      Thanks for stopping by.
      They serve two purposes:
      1) The dotted lines denote the area for a short corner. All eligible players must be inside this area prior to a short corner commencing.
      2) They sometimes use the dotted line for marking the ball for free hits, particularly any fouls within the opponents 23m line.

    It's a very skilful game, stick skills are hard due to the one sidedness of the stick and the small size of the ball and stick head

    I don't understand why outfielders don't where helmets yes the rules cut down dangerous play,but players get hit occasionally on the head and the stick is not designed to break so the player gets the full impact. of the strike.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 лет назад +1

      Yup, I always wondered why players aren't equipped with headgear in this day and age.
      I took a ball to the face during my college hockey days ... it's not fun.
      And those little facemasks that defenders wear during a short corner really don't protect against anything.

    • @josephboland627
      @josephboland627 9 лет назад +1

      Ninh Ly In hurling helmets were made compulsory in 2010 and there was more obvious need,but at the same time the hurley is springy and most be brittle enough to break for safety reasons.The hockey stick is much more solid and thick compared to a hurley and does not normally come into contact with other sticks so when it hits the head or any other part of the body god help you.Also the ball is a way harder again its played on the ground ,but when its in the air and hits the player.All hurling helmets have face guards as well,because they found the helmet was not enough.

    • @NinhLyUK
      @NinhLyUK  9 лет назад

      Joseph Boland Yeah I hear you. Helmets and face guards are sensible additions that for some reason field hockey hasn't implemented in their sport.

      At least the children´s game should use helmets and visors like the ones in ice hockey and hurdling.
