Sabrinas level 43 Alakazam might very well sweep Brunos crappy fighting team despite his being over ten levels higher. Pokemon Yellows different levels and mons, with Sabrinas level 50 Alakazam with Psychic as an attack, makes Sabrinas odds of folding Bruno even more clearcut. And if game Sabrina is even half as good at using her own latent psychic powers as her anime counterpart was, then she easily beats him 1 on 1 as well, being more or less the most powerful human without pokemons.
scyther is very ninja coded, one of the fastest in gen 1, so it tracks with the theme of koga's gym, I like when gym leaders have some variety in their teams
My headcanon is that the original Fighting-type Gym Leader in Saffron, the one who lost to Sabrina and lost the Dojo's status as an official Gym, was actually Chuck. After the loss, he he retired as a trainer and moved to Cianwood because he felt that he dishonored his Dojo and his students, but sometime in the years between then and when G/S/C take place, Chuck regained his passion for battling and opened a new gym in Cianwood. Meanwhile, Koichi and Kiyo fought as hard as they could to keep the Dojo going despite their master leavng.
I think the anime episode from the Indigo League where the 2 Gyms, the one repped by Electabuzz and the other repped by Scyther, are fighting to be made an official Gym is a reference to the Saffron City Gym beef.
The Scyther is easy to explain at least. Koga's gym is also a ninja school, and any boy who sees Scyther goes "Ninja Pokemon" lol. So that at least makes sense. Not to mention a lot of gyms and trainers use Pokémon that don't make sense. Like Giovannis ground gym having a Persian on it. I get the theme but yeah no that doesn't make sense on a ground type team
Or it could have been Aya when Koga was away like how the other Pallet Trainers fought Misty's sisters inside of Misty herself prior to Ash getting there. Aya seems more likely to use a Bug type since we saw her with Venonat first than Koga.
Giovanni only has a Persian in Yellow to match the Anime, he hasn't one in Red and Blue. The rest of the Kanto gyms do have fitting pokemon except Sabrina who has a Venomoth. Besides that, all Gym Leaders only have type matching Pokemon in Gen1-3 at least.
I suspect the reason the master uses Poliwrath in the Lets Go games is to avoid the implication that your taking one of his personal pokemon when choosing a Hitmon. Thats always how I interpreted it as a kid. Which could add a further dimension of tragedy. First he lost his gym status, then he looses one of his Pokémon.
I believe in lore wise (more than for gameplay convenience) there's no reason not to allow a 9th gym in Kanto, then still make the league's doors open to someone who has 8 badges, but the official people of the league would strongly advice trainers to fight the 9th gym they skipped, as it would help them evaluate if they are ready to take on the league's challenge.
7:53 Deneb is actually a girl. (Deneb's based on the Backpacker, which was a female class in Sword & Shield) But minor error aside, nice coverage on the history of the Fighting Dojo! I think it's kind of sweet that in HGSS, it became the place for other Gym Trainers to mingle compared to its original fate in GSC. I also had no idea that the Kiyo showed up in Pokemon Masters.
Wasn't Sabrina part of team Rocket in the manga and the whole "take over the gym arc" is part of taking out the strongest trainers in the city a part of taking over Silph Co.?
Sadly for Karate men, Sabrina comes likely prepared by that point with some X4 effective Dazzling Gleam in her moveset. After all, she has a part Fairy Mr. Mime in her team always.

She likely became gym leader with endorsement from Giovanni knowing how she was also team rocket. Giovanni was putting people in important positions to influence the region. The dojo was probably where the gym was originally but they had to all move so the dojo is not really in a great situation

Not really the "only" former gym in Pokemon, Elesa's gym in Nimbasa City in B2W2 is still there and they tell you she moved gyms
B2W2 also had the triplets old gym
