Quality upload, thank you Eddie. I have the same in video which I set to record the whole programme because I was there, Eddie Cr. And I am a jumps fan.
1st - Zafonic - Gone West (Mr Prospector) - Zaizafon (The Minstrel) 2nd - Barathea - Sadler's Wells (Northern Dancer) - Brocade (Habitat) Two top class racehorses with exceptional pedigrees fully justifying the hype
Me too, I remember lightening striking the commentary tower and the whole place went silent just before the start only to roar back into life as the race started.
@@grahammonro6500 so did zafonic.... Barathea breeder's cup mile winner, who would have been a good winner of that guineas, if you take zafonic out. Zafonic destroyed him. On that day he was virtually unbeatable. 2 seconds faster time than frankel, On slightly slower ground.
Before you start saying Frankel was greater at a mile...compare who zafonic beat in course record time to who Frankel beat at a mile in the guineas at 3yrs old....Frankel developed into a greater horse as he was versatile and classy at a range of distances. God rest John Mccririck...a lovely caring man.
Unfortunately versatility was something the horse didnt get a chance to demonstrate. Beating Excelebration a number of times over a mile etc did nothing to demonstrate versatility. Of course not the horses fault. But for both versatility and brilliance you need look no further than the likes of Dancing Brave and Brigadier Gerard. All great horses mind and not really possible to compare different eras.
Only have I seen Frankel win this race easier. What a legend. 4/5f! I was only 10 in 93 but if Zafonic was a 3yr old for 2000 Guineas 2019, I’d have lumped on! At least my dad was on it though ☺️
I actually think that Zafonic is the only huneas winner that could have troubled Frankel. Even beaten him. Zafonic could cruise (to get closer to Frankel) and could quicken. IMHO I think frankel tired in the 2000 even though Quealey said he didn't.
Stephen Small I was in nappies, will have to look it up. Frankel was all speed which is why the Derby route was a no go. I think he might have tired in the 2000 G purely because he made all and extended halfway. Had it won after 3f in. But I like late Guineas finishers like Camelot as they prove that the mile was the minimum trip and then a pretty decent bet for the derby.
Robert Hartley love Frankel but it’s possible your right. The running style to make all at Newmarket is dangerous but the speed of Frankel was unmatched, certainly in this era.
It doesn’t matter who Frankel or Zafonic beat in their respective Guineas. Because they were both a class apart from all of them. That said, history shows us Zafonic beat better horses. When comparing different generations we have to turn to the clock and the ground. Zafonic broke the course record and ran 2 seconds faster than Frankel on slower ground. Frankel was the better horse in terms of his career and achievements. There is no doubt. But on that one day, Guineas day, Zafonic was the better horse and produced arguably the single greatest Guineas performance. I say this as someone who’s favourite horse is Frankel.
I backed Zafonic this day and he was imperious . However , to suggest that he would have run all over Frankel is just plain stupid . Zafonic was a horse who had to settle into his races ; Frankel's blistering gallop would have got Zafonic off the bridle sooner than he would have liked and would have taken the sting out of the French trained colt's finishing speed , as he did with most horses .
Frankel was cooked at the end of his 2000 Guineas. If he went off like that against Brigadier Gerard, Zafonic and especially El Gran Senor, he would be pick off in the last 100 yds easily. Frankel was a great horse, but the opposition was awful.
Zafonic on this day, beats frankel.........too classy for him.the best of the best milers, over any generation would not of beat zafonic that day......top,top,top draw miler.
"This is a very good horse" great commentary from GG, another good call was his calling of Sauve Dancer winning the Arc in 1991......

Pat Eddery Was the Greatest Jockey
I still use the phrase 'pulling double' since I saw this in 93
1st - Zafonic - Gone West (Mr Prospector) - Zaizafon (The Minstrel)
2nd - Barathea - Sadler's Wells (Northern Dancer) - Brocade (Habitat)

What an incredible horse. Watching his races is mind-blowing.
One of the best this boy - pity he didn't train on or stay fit for a year or two
Yep, brings back memories
Walter RIP good jockey
Pat was on the top of the world 🗺, and then the world just forgot all about him 😓
He wasn't just a very good horse he was fantastic.
He was a real monster over a mile. He could have given Frankel a good race over track and trip im sure.
My thoughts exactly. A brilliant horse. Same with others on their day like hawking in the lockinge
Both Frankel and Zafonic were owned by Khalid Abdullah, so he would have been delighted either way.

Don't forget Dancing Brave.. He was barely 3 when he won his Guineas . And he beat Superior Horses in his Guineas.. Like Green Dessert..

Great c4 coverage. Pity highflier lost contract.
and Barathea was no mug just left him for dead
NO FEAR OF IT PULLING. BEST RIDER EVER ON IT
I think every single pundit on Channel 4 hammered this one ante post.

A range of distances? Versatile? Stretching it a bit.
McCrirrick was great for racing in a difficult time . Disgarded , when the PC brigade took over the country .

Zafonic on this day, pisses all over frankel.

more impressive than frankel frankels 2000 guineas was terrible race
Yes, he was so good they couldn't race him.
@@charliebear1436you mean they were so bad they couldn't race with him
Zafonic would have cruised by frankel in the guinneas he had a short career and frankel went on to be a great but in the guinneas no contest

Quality in this race not the best but he looked good and won in a canter however he would have been 5 lengths behind Dancing brave
