Thanks for the video. Several shots of the Irish Guards Memorial - my son served 6 tours in the ME and said the attention to detail was most impressive.
The sergeant playing the bass drum is keeping a constant forte beat, as he is the time beater not only for the Band but also for soldiers following the Band, and you need to hear the bass drum to keep step. he would be fully aware of the difference in forte and piano. Playing in a concert hall, is not always the same as playing on the march. When I have played bass drum on the march (not a British Army band) and had veterans (in tow) I was always told to keep the beat strong (forte) so that those further back could hear it!
DMaj Staite wears state dess in honour of the birthday of HRH The Princess Anne. 01:30 Wellington by W Zehle 04:38 A march I have been trying unsuccessfully to identify for the last 2 months. Anyone ? 07:40 Great Little Army - K Alford 08:08 Holyrood - K Alford 10:53 ? 12:49 Stafford Knot - WJ Dutoit 14:32 The Grenadiers Return
Moving along with the soldiers, avoiding small children, tourists and prams. Additionally, I do some editing when the camera is not pointed in the right place. It's a trade-off to get the entire performance vs. a stationary camera which would catch a shorter selection. The bands played music the entire way. If they stopped and marched to drum only, I might have ran forward to get the camera stationary up ahead. Apologies for any sea sickness caused to viewers.
This is the part I miss out when visiting the castle in 2012. Bad weather that day and did not catch up guard change time. Really appreciate you for uploading this video, as I feel my trip has finally completed right now...;)
Just to explain, the purpose of the bass drum on parades such as this is to play ff in order to help the troops following the band stay in step. The musical considerations are quite secondary. (ex Scots Guards Band)
Heard a guy asking if they where real or fake guns, of course they are real, sometimes the queen is there and there is a lot of artefacts that need to be protected
Yes they are real guns but, even if there was a risk to the queens life or any artefacts then it would be the job of the police to deal with the situation, not the solders.
NTech10 There are more soldiers there protecting the Queen, her family, her staff and her guests than appears to be the case, not all of whom are wearing uniform. The police also play a part in this, and there are also older uniformed civilians attending to misbehaving tourists, amongst other tasks.
Band does a great job, just a pity the cornets are a bit untidy and a bit in bright in sound at times, have to put that down to tiredness I guess, it is a long trot up to the castle and back without a drum corps in support.
Why is the Drum Major wearing State Dress yet HM The Queen is not there as we can see from the Union Flag flying over the Castle rather than the Royal Standard?
It sure does! But only so the whole parade stays in step. That is why the bass drummer is keeping a constant forte/fortissimo (whichever tickles ya fancy!) beat even if the band is playing at piano AND it is also why the bass drum has that 'ring' to it, so that not only can the band keep in time, but so that the guards behind them can keep in time too. But you probably already know that!

Paul Garnham thanks for the great info .
and the beat for the left foot was usually heavier than for the right foot, which assisted in keeping in step.
Why would they be carrying fake guns ,what a twat

I have detected various guards bands are playing Salvation Army marches and it sounds first class well done. David Kidd
Steven Staite, GG, Senior Drum Major Houselhold Division. Recently toured the USA with the Scots Guards Band
Kevin Morgan He is not the Senior Drum Major for the Household Division, Scott Fitzgerald is.
Model Household Division actually at that time it was Matthew J Betts
And who said men couldn't multi task those musicians are marching playing a instrument and reading sheet music all in one go
Thanks very much for your help.
@Hjaltland60 Once again I thank you.

"are they real guns" No, these days they don't give the army guns...
+Flashman incorrect the SA80s are fully loaded
Jack Parfitt It was sarcasm, old boy.
Flashman It’s perfectly true, small arms are not guns, as RN gunnery instructors made sarcastically clear when I was a teenaged cadet in the 1950s.
At 0:53 the kid is so cute
DM Steve Staite, Grenadier Guards
I share the name :)
Zachary Windsor
Lisa Fanari Yes?
For BRITANNIA
The Audio is Bloody Awful
Unfair politic!!
that bass drum sounds like absolute trash
all the bass drums sound like that in the U.K. brilliant
It's not the drum at fault, but the acoustics acceptance of the recorder. All the drums are tuned up before they march off.

phcasper you don’t have to listen to it sorry 😐 I guess you can do better. In this world hon no need for negativity.
