In this video, I show you how to make a PowerPoint counter which can count and keep points and scores. Something like a Scoreboard.
This PPT counter will be controlled by two buttons which will either increase or decrease the value by 1.
We add the VBA code to a button or a shape in the slide, on clicking the button, the macro is run. The macro increases/decreases the caption of the label by +1 or -1 in this case. You can customize this to fit your needs
These can be used in a variety of ways such as for quizzes in the classroom or conducting trivia competitions or quiz shows such as jeopardy or if you just want to keep scores or points for any soccer match.

could you make a video in which you do in a powerpoint presentation a scoreboard with countDown and a stop for it???
You can add a time setting in the transitions. After a certain time, the slide will go next. You can have a box wipe animation and you can set your desired time. If this isn't clear, I'll try to make a video tutorial.

Great video except I followed everything step by step but run macro option in action settings was greyed out. Checked macro security settings and all set to enabled.. so couldn’t assign action to the buttons so didn’t work for me.

You want the counter points to be added automatically? or do you want the counter in your first slide in slide-show-mode?
Bhavesh, you are the most responsible person out there! I need to start counter when the slide shows up during the presentation. Is there an “on load” routine for the slide? If not, I can compromise with a command button to start count down. Thank you very much.

Hallo, wonderful explanation . but one query is there....i have tried to save the file in macro enable show mode and as i clicked that file to open it shows error and stops to open the file in autorun mode. can you explain how to sort this problem.

want to make a quiz power point but that i can send to my students but that they wont be able to edit or do changes but simply do the quiz and be graded. I can do the interactive quiz and graded but the non editable is my question on hand.
1. You can password protect the file for editing (read-only)
2. You can save the file in pps (Powerpoint Show)
So, by this your students will be able to see all the slides of the PPT in normal view (there's a loophole, you have to open the pps show via a PPT window)
But, if you protect it with password and make it read-only.. your students will be able to see all the slides, but they won't be able to make changes.
I recommend that you try the above. I also recommend you trying to find loopholes which could be exploited by them.
In my opinion, I don't think that PPT is the software suited for these things.
Try making an online form with add-ons (Google forms). Google Forms has an add-on which can grade your students according to your answers and automatically arrange it in a spreadsheet.
There are many other softwares more suited for these kind of things though. Please try googling it.

I think I get how to do this but I have windows 365 for Mac and it doesn't have the developer tab. I downloaded one from another web site but it doesn't have the "A" (label) option there. Can I use the custom action shapes or normal shapes?
Basically I can write the code and have a trigger but no where that will add up the result.
Hello! Macs do not support ActiveX Elements, so we cannot have the Label.
We can use a normal shape and have this code:

nameoftheshape = int(nameoftheshape) + 1

Note: you can set the name of the shape from the shape selection pane.

The code you gave me says there's a mismatch error. Now it is saying the shape is not in the collection...but it is in my selection panel. I Used the exact code you gave me and change the object name to apple. I know your busy but what do you think happened?
Have you changed the "1" within the brackets of the Slide(1) to point to the correct slide number that contains the shape?

Hi there! Please check if your macros security is enabled in PowerPoint. Go to Developer > Macro Security > Enable

Make this in your existing ppt and change the code to represent plus or minus 100.

Hi! That's odd, can you send the file over to my email? I'd be happy to have a look. Common errors could include that the name of the label and the name mentioned in the code might not be exactly the same, it is case-sensitive.

VBA works only on .pptm and .ppsm, doesn't work in HTML.
When you select arrow to increase number, can you make the text have an animation?
We wouldn't be able to do that as the 'text' is a caption of an ActiveX Element Label.

I've mentioned its uses in the above article.
You can just make this type of counter in a slide-master-layout and embed it within your ppt file.
You can download the .pptm sample file which is provided in that link and check if that is working.
You'll need to enable the macros to make them work. Go to Developer > Macro Security > Enable.

How do I get it to work for 2019 I tried many times and it didn’t work please help...
It should work. I've tried it on 2019. Make sure you macros are enabled by going to developer > macro security > enabled. Also make sure your coding is correct; you can also download the template from my website and check if that works.

HOW TO ENABLE DEVELOPER TAB for 2007:
Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click PowerPoint Options.
Click Popular, and then select the Show Developer tab in the Ribbon check box.

You would have to reset the counter manually. You can use the reset code that I've shown in the video. Make the .Value = 0.

Thanks so much for this! After googling for what seems like a lifetime this vid showed me what to do straightaway. Any chance you can show how to go to a slide depending on what the value of the counter is? Eg go to slide 10 if counter is > 0 and < 100...(hope that makes sense)

Yes you can use different layouts, you just need to update your codes accordingly.

Hi, Bhavesh. It's been a year since I asked you for help with the scoreboard. One of my Taiwanese colleagues is also using it. I'm very grateful for your generosity. I came across a different kind of ppt that I use sometimes. There are 2 files within the same folder, a ppt and a txt. When I open the ppt in show mode and click on a certain button, two random words from the txt list appear on the slide. This can be used in various ways, for instance picking two random students to participate in an activity. I have also used it to pick two random words for sentence games. I'm not certain if this change is possible, but can one have two txt files from which one word/name is selected from each. If it is possible, I could choose one student from Group A and another from Group B, or instead of two random words, one from a noun list and another from a verb list. Do you think it's possible?

How do I make it for more than one counter? I need three! Thanks!! The first counter worked, I tired to make it for the second but values didn't change. Help!
You'll need to have 3 different labels with different names. Then change the code accordingly. REMEMBER: The names must be case sensitive while coding and no two labels can have the same name.
I noticed that you have another video for more than one counter, but I need to keep this format.
You can just design it differently and keep this format. Use the same codes and just replace the names of the labels.
I tried changing the labels and adding different names, but the first label is the only label that changes values
Is the name of all the three labels different? Are the codes changed corresponding to the label name?
For label1, label1.caption = (label1.caption) + 100
For label2, label2.caption = (label2.caption) + 100
Remember to change everywhere correspondingly.
Thanks a lot, this really helped me doing what I planned to do but I have a question. +I`m trying to do a multiple choice quiz and use your routine to keep a score counter. For example:1st slife has a sentence "My ??? name is Marc." then just below I have 3 butons "home", "name" and "job". Students then have to clikc on the correct answer (name obviously) which gives them 1 point on the score counter. If they hit one of the other 2 options, they get -1 point.Now I wanna use multiple slides with similar 3 choice questions but wanna keep the score counter across all the slides. How could I do that?

Yes, this is definitely possible, you can toy around with various slide masters and using some smart hyperlinks, it would be possible! Adding VBA for changing the colour of the shapes and your module would be created! However, I could create one for you since I also do freelancing.
