  • Spring Wood at Whalley in the Lancashire's Ribble Valley.
A short stroll from the centre of Whalley, Spring Wood rewards springtime visitors with a visual feast of bluebells and wild garlic from mid-April into May. Once owned by the monks of Whalley Abbey it was orginally called Oxheywoode and formed part of a much larger deer park. The wood's location was described as 'one bow shot East of the Abbey' - when you see just how far apart the Abbey and the wood are, you realise just how good English long bows were!
As an ancient semi-natural nature reserve, Spring Wood makes a perfect picnic spot which provides accessible outdoor tables and seating. There is also a full range of toilet facilities (including disabled) and an accessible information kiosk/meeting room. Staffed by the the universally-excellent Lancashire Countryside Ranger service, you can normally find expert advice on hand on all wildlife and countryside matters. The car park is right next to the information centre, and disabled visitors have the joy of watching the various birds and squirrels from the comfort of their car seats.
Within the woodland are a range of gentle and not-so-gentle paths - many of which are fine for access for both wheelchair and pram users. The paths mostly start from the car park; and lead off in different directions. Just away from the car park, is what I think people call an outdoor classroom - basically a wooden teaching seat, surrounded by log benches for school kids to learn about nature. Further into the woodland and you will find streams, ponds and animal habitats of various types. The woodland includes a massive selection of different plants and trees, so there is loads for kids to learn. Higher up the woodland in the arboretum area there are some tremendous trees; which are well worth exploring the woodland for.
And, at the very top of the woodland is a ""surprise""view - a large gap in the trees reveals one of the best views there is across the Ribble Valley. You will probably spend as long admiring the view as it took you to walk up to it!
As well as giving thanks to the Countryside Ranger Service, a lot of work is also done by the ""Friends of Spring Wood"" - a registered charity to help maintain and look after the wood. They are worth your support too!
    With many thanks
