RULES:
The object of the game is to be the player with the most money at the end. The youngest player goes first then play proceeds clockwise. On your turn, spin the spinner and move your car forward, along the path following the direction of the arrows, by the number of spaces spun. You may not move backwards. When you pass a green payday space, collect your salary as indicated on your career card. If you land on a green payday space, then you collect an additional 100K bonus.
When you land on an action space, take the top action card from the deck, read it aloud (except for the yellow highlighted text at the bottom) and follow the instructions. Keep the action cards you draw in facedown pile by you until the end of the game to earn more money.
When you land on a spin to win space, all players choose a number on the spin to win wheel and place their token on that number. You get to put a second silver token on a second number since you landed on the space. Spin the spinner until a number with a token on it comes up. That player wins 200K and the tokens are returned.
When you land on a baby space, add as many pegs to your car as the space tells you and add them to your car. When you land on a house space, you may choose to buy a house, sell a house, or do nothing. To buy a house, draw the top 2 cards from the house deck and pick one. Pay the bank the purchase price and return the other to the bottom of the deck. Place the newly purchased home faceup in front of you. You may own more than one house. To sell a house, spin the spinner and look at the center colored area to see if it is red or black. Collect the sale price as indicated on the card by the color from the bank, then return the card to the bottom of the deck.
When you land on a pet space, draw a pet card, read it aloud and do what it says. Add the card to your collection of action cards until the end of the game for more money.
When you come to a stop space, you must stop moving, even if you had moves left. After resolving your stop you always spin and move again. Each stop space is different, and are as follows:
“Graduation”. Take the top 2 college career cards from the deck, pick one to put faceup in front of you and put the other back under the deck.
“Get Married”. Add another people peg to your car, then spin. If you spin red, every other player gives you 50K. If you spin black, then every other player gives you 100K.
“Night School”. If you don’t want to change your career, you don’t have to. If you want to change your career. Pay the bank 100K. Take the top college career card from the deck. If you want it, swap it with your current career card, if not, put it back under the deck.
“Family”. Pick a direction to travel.
“Baby”. Spin the spinner to see how many babies you’ve had. Add the appropriate people pegs to your car.
“Risky”. Pick a direction to travel.
If ever you don’t have enough money to pay a debt or buy something, you must take out a bank loan. The banker gives you 50K plus 1 white bank loan each time you borrow. Pay the loan back at any time by returning it, along with 60K to the bank.
When you reach the retirement space, choose whether to go to the millionaire mansion or the countryside acres. Park your car, kick back, and wait for everyone else to retire. Collect your retirement bonus from the bank as follows: The first to retire receives 400K. the 2nd receives 300K, the 3rd receives 200K, and the 4th receives 100K.
Once everyone has retired, everyone pays back their debts and add up their wealth. Sell all your houses. Collect 100K for each action and pet card you have. Collect 50K for each baby you have. Pay the bank 60K for each loan. Add all your cash together. The player with the most money wins!

I played this game 26 years ago. I would always skip marriage and kids. I broke the rule of choosing a teacher career card without going to college. Years later, I became a teacher without earning a degree, and I'm still single and childless 🙂

I just got life for the first time in many year and it is different I thought remembering wrong I'm happy to find out that the game was as I remember now I'm trying to figure out why they changed the game
I used to play this when I was a kid but it has changed so much, a lot more options than before.

When I was a kid, we only collected 50k when landing exactly on the Salary space, no just passing. Did they change the rule, or were we playing wrong? I do remember we were always broke, with tons of debts, so that could've been the reason, lol.
My daughter and I watched this video and are going to play for the first time. This is always the channel we go to before playing a new game.

Reuben Klamer the toy inventor of "The Game of Life" died on 9/14/21 He also created the phaser rifle used in the" Star Trek" TV series. It's amazing that a man who created one of the most popular games in US history ended up being it's biggest winner of all. He lived to be 99 years old. Obviously he knew a lot more about winning in the real game of life than anybody ever gave him credit for.
But did he pass go and collect $200?

I've always liked the concept of the game of life, but I've always wanted a more realistic version where things can and will go wrong, so you need to keep retrying until you succeed.
I believe they've made a few updated versions and sequels that take in societal trends like student debt and housing crises into effect.

@Michelle VDG Buy The Game of Life 2 by Marmalade Game Studio. I know you said it’s tiny to pass around, but you can use the online version.
Its not complex. The instructions in the box do a really good job of explaining it so as you play you can easily refer to the instructions if you forget.
I actually remember it without rewatching.
Played about 4 games of this tonight. Love it. I enjoy it more than the old version I'm used to from the 90's and on. I miss some of the old jobs tho.

It's not actually that bad, at least in my experience. My least favourite part of it are the action cards that say 'whoever spins the highest gets x money' which for me really slow the game down and is just annoying due to their abundance. That being said, there are a few factors which make make me prefer my 1985 edition, but the advantage of this game is its simplicity. That being said, I agree with the sentiment of your comment.
We just played the 2007 edition tonight and it is INSANE how much this game has changed since this point. This game is constantly changing with each revision- some of the rules stated here may be accurate for the current version of the game but according to the rule book we read tonight would not be permitted. Read the rules of your book carefully, I suppose!
Man, I he up with my family's traditional 1950-60's versions of these games. Life, Yhatzee, Monopoly. The games rules were so different. If you can get em please show some the old school ones. They were so different! Life had revenge spaces and all kinds of evil stuff.

Are the first player(s) to retire done playing or do they still participate while waiting for the other players? That is the only part of the game that is confusing?
Once retired you are done and wait for others to retire

I was expecting some kind of second level play strategy, for some reason, not a manual summary. You should do a second one, Mastering X, because even simple games have some next level stuff. Looking at the base rules, clearly there is some career strategy related to the upper and lower bounds, and a house strategy as well.

My Variation:
If you land on the Payday space, you get 2X Salary instead of the 100K bonus.
If you land on a baby space when your car is full, do nothing.
You can own up to 3 Houses. If you get a 4th or more house, you must sell houses right away so the number of houses remains at 3.
You can take out up to 3 Bank Loans at a time. If you can't pay after having 3 bank loans(except when repaying Loans), you have to sell Houses(if you have one) or you'll go bankrupt and you are eliminated. Bankrupt by bank? Pay the bank all your cash and loans, and the action cards and pet cards will be returned to the bottom of the deck. Bankrupt by another player? Pay that player all you Action and pet cards, as well as all your cash and loans. The player who caused your bankruptcy will have to settle all your loans immediately.
When you retire(but you're not the last player to retire), you can still spin the wheel, but it's for cash only. The bonus will be 10K times the number you spun. Example, you spin a 5. You get 5X10K, which is 50K.
I wonder I don't want to say it because of some restoring my Idea I want to make a version of life kind of like Satire humor. Is where life is hard The cards say things like where it's like Kind of cards against humanity Like where bad things happen But you take it as How people can build themselves out in things.

The way to win this game is to be the last to make it to retirement. Because you have more chances to land on yellow life spaces . The life cards help you to get more money in the end . That is The only thing I don’t like about this game . Because you do not want to spin high numbers!

This game is purely on luck, am I right? Compare to Monopoly which has slight strategy (95% luck, 5% strategy)

How to Play the Game of Life
Why do children wake up with their eyes wide open and jump out of bed while we open them just wide enough to see the phone so we can set it to snooze? Why are young people energetic and ready to “conquer the world” while older people are cautious and hesitant? Can we stay young-spirited forever? After all, if life is not a game, there is no excitement in it. And if there is no excitement in life, what is the point of living?
If we want to keep enjoying, we need to make life a lifelong game. This game is very different from anything we know. It is not about what we can receive, but about what we can discover! By connecting to other people, we discover new worlds, other people’s worlds!
How do we achieve this? Quite simply, we need to focus on others rather than on ourselves. This may sound simple, but if you try it, you will realize how self-absorbed you are.
We are all like that. Even those who feel that they are generous and giving are absorbed in their giving and do not see how much they do it for their own interest, and how they are focused on their own benefit when they give. Giving is fine, but the focus is the point here. Had the focus been on the receiver, the giver would have discovered countless revelations that are hidden from a self-centered eye.
For the game to succeed, you need partners. It is impossible to play the game of giving without people to whom you can give and from whom you can receive. Therefore, there must be a group of people, up to ten or so, who play the game together.

The game of life, unlike any other game, reveals to us the secrets of life, the secrets of reality, because when you can look at something from all angles, nothing remains hidden from you.
