Which Meater wireless thermometer is best? Meater+ VS Meater Block review

  • I was WRONG on how I thought the Meater wireless thermometer works... this review of the Meater+ and Meater Block is designed to help explain the differences in connection technology in each of the Meater probes so that you can find the right one for you.
    Looking at Amazon the Meater has over 7k 5 star ratings... but there are a few 1,2,3 star ratings as well. Reading the comments it seems the #1 issue is a lack of understanding on how the probe connects, how far you can go etc. so I put this video together to help explain the differences between the various Meater wireless thermometer models as its something I didn't fully understand when I first ordered my Meater plus probe before eventually upgrading to the Meater Block.

    Great video James, thanks for sharing! I purchased the Meater Block per your recommendation, and I just LOVE IT! A little costly, but very accurate and usable. I put a pork butt on my pit using 2 probes and ran to town 30 miles away to do some errands. With the Meater block connected to my home Wi-Fi, I was able to monitor my pork temps and estimate how long I had before I needed to get back home! Great product and great review!

    I got one of these for Christmas, had a hell of a time getting it set up because it did not want to connect. After 2 days finally got it to connect. Then the next time I go to use it , it wanted to do an update and I had to use an older unit of another type I had at the house. Boxed it back up and sent it back.....turned out to be more trouble than what it was worth. Don’t miss the headache at all. I’m glad you are happy with yours, but as for me NEVER AGAIN!

    Just got the plus. Haven’t tried yet. Don’t make it a habit being gone worrying about temp due to the Traeger app letting me adjust temps from my phone. Looking forward to getting a more accurate read of temp inside the smoker though. Thanks for sharing all that info. It had me confused as well when I was ordering. You explained it well. The block is a bit pricey for my liking.

    Did my first reverse sear with meater + on friday night with a 1.8kg ribeye on the bone (2 rib bones 😉). Around 1h40 mins, i was aiming at 52c core temp and the app told me to remove at 44c. I put it to rest in the oven (turned off) and it got to 53c (or at least that’s what the all told me 😄)
    So overall very happy with the first cook!

    James,
    Thank you so much for the tremendous effort you put into your channel. I bought a Kamado Joe classic 2 almost one year ago and have not looked back since. Your channel is my go-to for ideas, recipes, and methods. You have answered so may of my questions. Over time I have become developed and have become more confident in my bbq skills. The the majority of my cooks have been a tremendous success which I continually give credit where due to your efforts and information. Thank you!
    One the sources of continual confusion is the difference between grill and dome temperature. I purchased, early on, a nutrichef bluetooth temperature probe. During a cook I monitor the grill, internal, and dome temperature and record the readings in a logbook. I have also learned to take screen shots of the graph as the app is somewhat unstable even on an iphone.

    I have the meater plus and it’s terrible. The software is great, and the thermometer works well, but the connection is worthless and constantly has problems. I looked at the meter block and the price is ridiculous. You can get an ink bird for thermometer set up for well under $100 and it does just fine. The meater app is really slick and seeing when it will be done is nice even though it takes forever for it to figure that out. But it’s not enough to justify the price difference.

    Hey James,
    Great videos!!! Thank you for taking the time to make these. They have been super helpful to me. I am a long time fan of grilling, but I have always kept it simple using a gas grill for steaks, burgers, dogs, and maybe some fish and chicken here and there, but I recently decided I wanted to upgrade to something that would yield better results and be more fun. After watching a ton of videos and thinking through the experience I am looking for, I decided to get a Classic iii. Since I am so new to Kamado grilling I am trying to build an arsenal of the right tools. It seems like something that would be pretty crucial for a beginner is a thermometer such as the one in this video.
    So I have three questions:
    1. If you could only choose one device between the Meater and the iKamand, which would you choose?
    2. If you could only get one thermometer would you get the Meater or something different?
    3. I noticed that you are not supposed to go above 527 with the Meater, is that common with most thermometers or do some allow for higher heat, and does that even matter?
    Thanks so much for any advice or help you can offer with those questions!

    • @SmokingDadBBQ
      @SmokingDadBBQ  3 года назад +8

      1) I would choose the Meater. The app is much better than the iKamand app, and it works with rotisserie
      2) If I could only have one probe of any kind I would have to get a Thermapen MK4 or similar as I need fine touch, small hole instant read temps for finishing all my cooks. The Meater gets me to 95% and then I have a instant read probe to manage the last 5%.... but if you're making me pick I would have to go with the instant read since I use that on most every meal
      3) Yes most grill probes even wired ones don't like temps above 500f

    Excellent info again :) Picked up the Meater original recently not realizing the limited range, saw 50M from the Plus version and that was stuck in my head. Although have yet to test the original Meater, the distance will be farther than the 10M through brick and multiple walls to boot where I'm situated if putting something in the Oven or on the BBQ for a slow roast. Luckily I have a few spare Android devices to use Meter Link, so my 1 device sits in the kitchen (easily accessible to my oven or BBQ outside) and sends the info to the cloud via my Router (centralized in my house) so I can them access the cook via my personal mobile device anywhere in the house or front yard. This easily solves distance issue and works like the block :) Ideally the block is the easy and more versatile solution of course but for almost 4x the price, I'd have to pass even while doing multiple types of beef/pork/chicken etc on large cooks. I have 2 other wireless solutions (albeit a little clunky but work fine) already in place to support larger cooks if needed. The Block is my end game but it's just extremely overpriced in my mind at this point. Keep up the great content fellow CDN 👍👍

Thank you so very much, excellent content. Now I feel comfortable with which Meater to buy sooner and get to grilling/smoking/rotisserie with a Meater sooner. 👍

I read some comments on Amazon that with the Block, if you only want to use one probe, all 4 will be turned on automatically. Great Review. I have purchased the meater block because of your review. I live in Ontario and I was wondering how you setup your block if it’s raining or in the winter(-20c). From the specifications the block needs to be 3 meters from the probe. I am wondering if the block can communicate with the probes from inside your house

      Place your block close as possible to you cooking appliance and of course make sure your wifi is able to reach the block. If you the cooking appliance is outside and wifi is weak i would recommend to install wifi extender in yohr garden.

    A question: How would you describe the bluetooth strength between the probe and (any) base station? Now I have a Weber iGrill 2 (bluetooth) and whenever I close my backdoor, I loose the connection to my BBQ which is 8 meters outdoor.

    • @SmokingDadBBQ

      When closed, metallic grills block the Bluetooth (radio) waves, greatly reducing range to whatever they are talking to. Ceramic grills do not.

    Hi James, I have been on the fence about getting a Meater for a while, one of the constant complaints floating around the internet however, is that these aren't great at predicting cook time for longer cooks (briskets, pulled pork etc) you however seem to use it for these a lot. How does the meater app go in terms of getting close to predicting finish times of cooks vs when you actually finish? I am assuming this is more of a software issue rather than hardware and may have been updated since the complaints? Any insight you might have on this would be really appreciated. Love your work!

    • @SmokingDadBBQ
      @SmokingDadBBQ  3 года назад +3

      they aren’t great at calculating the stall. each piece of brisket is different and the stall depending on the temp you cook at can last a long time.
      I cook hotter and faster than I did 10 years ago when I though 200-200f was the ideal temp so I don’t notice the stall like I used too and I don’t rely on the probe to guess the time as I have cooked enough I plan my rough time ahead of time. it does much better in the last 20f (ie 180-200) at giving an accurate guess. and it is very accurate with chicken, pork or large steaks etc.

    • @jhunlee4825
      @jhunlee4825 Год назад

      I had experience the same thing however I have experimented this, the drops usually happen if the the probe is far away from your block or the type of oven you use where a faraday cage happens and or blockage along the way or walls. And they recommend to place the block as close as possible to the cooking appliance and that solves it.

But I have a question, I have my instant thermometer, and now I m looking for something to help me keep an eye during longer cooks. I'm a bit torned so looking greatly for your input. I'm considering meater+ but its 109€ but there are some more simple stuff like thermopro tp25 at 69€ which has 4 probes, sends info to your phone and theres thermopro tp27 also at 69€ with 4 probes aswell and it sends info to its own receiver. My question is, is that meater+ really worth the difference? Are those other models obsolete and its the way to go with meater? I m not using rottisarie devices by the way. Cheers from Europe!!

    Hi James,
    I bought a Meater+ based on your promotion of the product. lt worked great for the first cook but died part of the way through the second cook. I thought it may have been the base station battery that was supplied with the unit so I changed that and tried it again for a third cook. No dice. My unit won't accept a charge.
    The return window is very short (1 month) and I wasn't able to return it through Amazon. I have been regularly requesting support through Meater for the past month without a solution. They became unresponsive when it was apparent that cleaning the probe would not resolve the charging issue.
    $169 is a lot to spend on a single use thermometer. I think your viewers should be aware of the company's customer service record and that they will be on their own if they receive a faulty unit.
