As a pastor, I tell my congregation that if you don’t take care of yourself, than you cannot take care of others. That means in evangelism also. We won’t be able to spread the Word, unless we are well. Our bodies (life) is a gift. We have a responsibility to take care of the temple which is our bodies. Not for vanity reasons but because we are grateful for what God has given us in our bodies and in our lives. Taking care of yourself is SO important. God would want us to take care of what He has created. Great discussion. I hope your mom’s auto immune disease is taken care of. They are horrible to have. I have one. Nutrition and rest is key. Thank you for what you do in Christ.

Loved all these tips. Quiet time, being alone and being creative fills me up like no other.
Working out and eating whole foods made such a big difference in my Christian walk. I neglected my body for a long time and I did not realise that I was not honouring my body well. Thank you so much for making this video and I 100% agree that self love doesn’t always have to be selfish. Jesus has a body and we have one too!
I did my dissertation on biblical anthropology- tracing Paul’s theology of the body and it’s relationship to Christian formation. I came to the conclusion that the body and growing into Christlikeness is inseparable. it blew my mind after 7 months of intense research I realised how much I neglected my body. So keep spreading this 🧡🧡
Also when Taylor said that pets secretly love you even if they run away from you gives me hope that my bunny truly loves me. Lol.
Another thing that fills me up is listening to solid sermon. ❤️❤️❤️

Yes!! “Honor your father and your mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. ”‭‭(Matthew‬ ‭19:19‬ ‭MEV‬‬). In order to love and take care of others we should love and take care of ourselves. Not to only love myself but to share that love with others.
Also taking care of your body can be a reflection of what is inside our hearts just like the way you would carry your self from the way you dress, talk, or walk.

Being outside and exercising greatly help my mental health and spending time with a friend is also a blessing. I believe it is also important to mention that we should seek Jesus to consistently be our cup and portion and fill us because nothing else ever will sustain us like Him! For anybody that needs to hear it: self care isn't always facemasks and tea. Self care is also forcing yourself to get up and exercise or take a shower on a day when you dont feel like moving. GOD is always the best answer and he wants us to take care of ourselves so we can help people the best.

    God bless y’all!
The apostle Paul ( which was used by God) said that we are the temple of the Holy Spirit. As a Christian we are supposed to take care of our bodies because God gave it to us and it’s His! It’s bad to do self care when you’re only focusing on looking attractive or trying to make yourself more pretty when you already are :) God wants us to take care of our bodies, but remember that ITS ALL TO HONOR AND GLORIFY GOD!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻NOT US!!!

Totally agree that self-care is important. I've also experienced burnout from going not stop without taking time to rest. Self care is not selfish but necessary so that we can recharge and truly be the best versions of who God created us to be. Also really important to mention that self care has varying aspects and it requires us to take an active role in preserving mental, emotional, or physical health. Self care is also individualized, so what works for someone else may not work for you. Some questions I often share with others to consider as they create a self care plan or kit are: What helps me calm down and relax?
What exercises help me feel centered? What kind of pampering leaves me feeling refreshed? What items make me feel comforted? What are things that make me feel inspired? Thanks again for addressing this subject:)

This video is gold! I completely agree with everything you guys shared, and I hate when Christians believe self-care and self-love is selfish because there is definitely a way to do both and honor God. He is the one that fills our cup and I think our self-care and self-love is how we bring forth our cups to Him.

Like tips/ideas how to serve, pour, and love others when we are filled! I think for me especially with the topic of this video, I tend to just do these self care things naturally...haha! And not really pouring into others lives! And I truly want to pour into others lives, being other-centered.. If that makes any sense! :)

I really enjoyed watching your video. I totally agree with you when you said taking care of yourself is essential to loving God and loving others as well. My religion (Islam) also places importance on caring for our well-being too. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, your own self has rights over you, so fast and break your fast, pray and sleep."
Let me share three out of the many ways Islam teaches us to care for our well-being,
    1) Islam teaches us how to overcome our negative feelings. One negative notion of the baser self is anger. If we’re not careful, it can render us destructive towards our surroundings. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “If one of you is angry while he is standing, let him sit down so his anger will leave him; otherwise, let him lie down.”
Another emotion that can consume us negatively is jealousy. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Lurking towards another is the diseases of the nations before you. Envy and hatred are razors. I do not say they shave hair, but rather they shave the religion. By the one in whose hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you have faith and you will not have faith until you love each other. Shall I tell you what can affirm that for you? Spread peace between yourselves.”
    2) Islam teaches us to take care of our physical health. Our Prophet (PBUH) warns us about the danger of gluttony and teaches us the alternatives on how to overcome it, which is limiting our portions. He (PBUH) said, "There is no vessel which the son of Adam can fill that is worse than his stomach, for it is enough for him to take a few bites in order to straighten his back. Yet if he is unable to do so, then he may fill it with a third of food, a third of drink, and a third for his breath.” Islam also places great importance upon our cleanliness, as stated in the Quran, “And Allah loves those who seek to purify themselves.”
    3) Islam teaches us to preserve our relationships with people. The Prophet (PBUH) said,
"I guarantee a house on the quarters of Paradise, a house in the middle of Paradise, and a house in the highest part of Paradise for one who gives up arguing even if he is right, who gives up lying even while joking, and who makes his character excellent.”
Another way that Islam teaches us is to exchange gifts, as this will only foster affection between one another. The Prophet (PBUH) said, "Give each other gifts and you will love each other.”
However, Islam advocates that we exercise caution with who we build our relationships with, as not all are good for us. This means we have to prune away unhealthy and negative relationships. The Prophet’s companion said, “A righteous companion is better than being in solitary, and solitary is better than a bad companion.”

Self care should not ever be seen from a guilty perspective. I don't think self care has anything to do with one's religion. Just take care of your physical being the way you keep striving to care for your spiritual life. Why not? We're holistic beings. We're not just spiritual.

Love the video!! Can u make a video on if yoga is bad and what stretches is okay to do?

    • @Authorthings

I've seen a few perspectives on yoga for Christians. Google yoga for sports and you might find something to do. Be careful with it. As with anything, I believe it's a heart issue. Pray about it. The Holy Spirit will convict you if it's wrong. Yoga was invented to be closer to Brahma (a pagan practice) and each position is to do that. However, Christmas is also rooted in paganism, but I believe as Christians we have taken it back and made it to be something to glorify God. I personally do yoga from time to time, but I try to make sure that I do it for stretches and movement rather than for "self improvement" and other things that could lead to idolatry (having a better self promoting image/finding my worth in how others view me). I hope this helps. Pray always and let God lead you. Remember, nothing can replace your value in Christ.

Oh boy, where do I start...
So your best pro-self-care tip was that Jesus was a human? No, that does not count. While that doctrine does teach why Jesus was the perfect mediator between God and man, it is not proof of self-care. As matter of fact, look at Mark 6:30-34. Jesus gives up "self-care" in order to take care of his followers. Jesus was the suffering servant even before he got to the cross (Isaiah 53:1-4)! He suffered in his ministry, and part of that is to serve us. Are you thinking about all those time that Jesus went away to a desolate place? That's because he was spending time in intense prayer with the father, not pampering his body in all the ways you described. Speaking of which, while I give you credit for mentioning spiritual disciplines in your first tip (they sound more like God-care than self-care but whatever), all the rest is just excuses to be self-indulgent in worldly riches. There are many Christians in 3rd world/developing countries, who cannot afford to "self care" like you described. Are they missing out, or does God not care for them? You keep talking about filling up your empty cup, but it is JESUS that fills up your empty cup, not yourself.

My self care loves are....Reading. I love a good Christian romance. I love reading/studying my Bible.... when the weather is nice, I love to sit on my porch, while reading. And I also love journaling, whether it be on my day or doing my Bible journaling (I write in a actual journal for my Bible journaling about what I’m studying).

I was feeling super guilty when it came to self-care... I understand beautifying myself is giving glory to God but I’ve felt guilty that I don’t want to be in the Word every second of my day and I’ve been draining myself by trying to. I think it’s partly because I am isolated and I do not have many Christian friends, so I assume that I must only be in God’s Word and not with others.

Abby girl!! I’ve felt the EXACT same way. I actually just felt that way a few moments ago. I felt that I needed to basically deprive myself of sleep to pray- basically that everything I do needs to be difficult because if it’s not then I’m not being “Christ-like” or something’. You know what I mean?
But that’s not what God wants us to do all the time. And that’s not the way He wants us to be and think. Yes, maybe God wants me to stay up later and pray this day, maybe i have a ton to talk to Him about and i feel the need to stay up & pray- that’s okay. Maybe one day God wants you to say no to your friends and yes to spending time with Him- that’s okay also. Maybe this is Him calling you to do something bigger, it doesn’t mean shutting yourself out from people 24/7. God doesn’t want me to stay up late every single day to pray for an hour nor does he want you to isolate yourself all of the time to read your Bible. He calls us to do different things at different times. Maybe He’s calling you to spend a bit more time with Him because you’re spending a ton of time with your friends. Maybe, for me, God’s calling me to just spend a few more minutes in prayer with Him or have deep prayer in the middle of the day so I won’t have to deprive myself of sleep at night. God works in wonderful ways! But the point is: don’t stress out Abby! Don’t stress it. Have a prayer with God and ask Him to reveal to you what He wants you to do. Ask Him to give you a discerning heart & mind- to KNOW what He is telling you to do when He tells you to do something. Ask Him to lead you.
I will pray for you girl! I hope you do well, you are not alone in this- I understand you and Jesus COMPLETELY understands you. Speak to Him!! He’s got you. God bless you!!!

I forgot to comment on the Christian friend thing. I also don’t have many Christian friends, like at all. I’ve been feeling a bit alone in this journey. Maybe we can encourage each other and lift each other up as sisters in Christ :) and pray for each other as well. if you’d like, I’d love to be a friend of yours. It’s totally up to you. If you need anything or are interested, my email is: sophiamarie120805@gmail.com
