As a waterman, I've spent 33 vacations in the No Ka Oi island, even right after 9/11, and this year will be no different. Aside from donations, I guess that the best way to help the local community is to keep the economy up and running and, as you know, tourism is the primary source of income in Hawaii. Since I do love Lahaina, I'll volunteer somehow but, aside from the help that I can provide, I do not plan to visit the West side of the island this time. I stopped by Lahaina last December just the day before leaving, as usual, and I want to remember that jewel that way. Now it's time for mourning but I'm confident that in a matter of a couple of years that wonderful, unique town will rise from the ashes.

i lived in lahaina in the '70's. it was magical. i'm so sad to see this jewel gone.
