Tim managing to replace a turbo with an hour still left on the clock is godlike, there’d be a pile of crumpled beer cans and some choice language being thrown at the car if I attempted that job
To be fair, it is in an easy to get to location. My first time ever swapping one it took me under 3 hours from start to finish. It’s no slouch job though.
no lie
Wrx's are easy to replace. Takes about an hour and 30 with a lift...give or take
I can change my turbo on my srt4 in an hour very easy
In the stock location it’s super easy
Huge improvement guys. I love that you're presenting issues that naturally occur on these cars, and showing that a car that's running doesn't mean it's good to go.
Yes exactly!!
you mean my neighbors truck that sounds like an industrial grinding operation, isn't running normally?
cawaazy.
@@supercooldude824 GOOD BOOST 👍
@@robert9595 the neighbour truck sounded like Panzer Dragoon.
Who wants an Impreza when they’re suppose to get a whole wrx?
Y’all are all natural mechanics, and that’s pretty cool. But ur editor’s ability to condense 3 hours into 10 minutes is scary cool.
No such thing as a “natural” mechanic. Nobody is born with the knowledge of a mechanic, slow brain
@@YaksenPushMongosome people grow up liking to mess with shit like this and are just naturally really good with shit like this compared to people who do it just for the money
@@shyifz1547 Everything takes work to become good at. Saying someone is born with innate skill is discounting all the hard work and dedication they put into it
@@YaksenPushMongoBut if you start from a younger age, you won't need to put as much effort as an average person learning in their later years
@@YaksenPushMongowhy u so pressed😂😂
I'm actually with Tim on the downpipe. I think that taking off the downpipe cleared a lot of space and made the replacement a lot easier. I think if anything it saved him time not having to smash his knuckles up quite as much getting that turbo back on. ^^ Just my opinion.
Came here to say this. Aaron was dead wrong saying the DP was a waste of time
I've pulled a turbo from that gen Subaru, and you MUST take off the downpipe, as there are studs on the turbo for the downpipe.
Also the video mentioned listening for the blow off sound, which isn't a thing on a WRX. They use bypass valves instead. The ECUs are programed to expect air from the bypass. You can do some real harm slapping a blow off on a wrx.
@@mastrFlex yes sir. Can’t throw a blowoff valve in any turbo car without a tune and expect good things to come of it. But people just wanna hear the ps ps lol little do they know an external waste gate is really what makes a turbo sound mean af.
@@mastrFlexnot really true. Maybe newer Subarus. Venting fully to atmosphere (which is what gives the psshh noise) is never good for any turbo car.
However it won’t ruin the motor fast. Car will just run more rich and turbo will be working harder. Full recirc or even worse, blocking the bov will cause more issues, as it builds up excessive pressure at higher psi. Best option is a dual port bov like what gfb sells. Can set to part recirc, part atmospheric. So it only releases what’s needed into the atmosphere then recircs the rest so boost doesn’t have to build all the way up again - less wear on the turbo.
Mechanic: "that'll be 43.75 hours book time plus a new engine"
Tim: "hold my downpipe."
Hey probably held each others down pipes before and after
Lol
😂😂😂hold my downpipe
LMAO
This is why you should always bug your mechanic buddies to work on your car for you.
Tim 2 seconds after popping the hood: “I think I need a new turbo”

Yes, the down-pipe DOES need to come off. It is impossible to pull the turbo without the down-pipe coming off after the intercooler is removed. This is due to the turbo studs on the hot side of the turbocharger connecting to the down-pipe and on the exhaust housing connecting to the up-pipe from the exhaust manifold.
Don’t worry, it’s pretty clear no one In the comments or at donut has ever worked on or seen a Subaru before 🤦🏻🤷🏼♂️ literally Lego
This
Hit the nail on the head.
@@TheOakley165 Agreed! Thankfully Tim didn't listen because pulling a turbo on a Subi is pretty easy once the DP comes off like it's supposed to.
@@TheOakley165 I'd be more than happy to teach the lads at Donut Media a thing or two about Subaru's. 😁 They're really not that difficult and don't have major issues when they're maintained properly. Maintenance is the KEY to any performance car, especially a horizontally opposed engine.
Tim’s a god, I’ve literally never heard of someone who could take a down pipe off and swap a turbo in 3 hours!! That incredible😉
2 hours actually. He had 1 hour remaining.
It's a 20 minute job max
Its really easy to take the turbo off these cars once you take off the intercooler.
You never seen flat rate techs work before….
+ hot engine
Everyone's faces like "damn, he's good" when he mentions it might need a new turbo. Lol. It's crazy that it only took him 2 hours(plus a 5 min. Test drive) to diagnose, pull, rebuild, and replace a turbo.
Yeah I need to know what shop he works at lmao I'm gonna be a customer
And the shops will say it’s a 12 hour job
@@cowanjones7232 well, because it is.
@@ritemasterful for someone doing it on their own, researching it by themselves and for the first couple times maybe. Not for a shope that's getting paid 100s in labor because they claim expertise lol
@@jqualin4927 hahahahah what about the shop? the tools? the hours to learn? another set of hands to help? are those free?
Taking the Downpipe off makes it 900% easier to reinstall I’ve rebuilt my ej205 and had the same issue it is definitely smarter to take the downpipe off not harder
Yeah when Aaron said it didn't need to come off I'm like hmm somebody hasn't worked on subarus much huh haha.
Good to know it wasn't just me, it's also 3 extra bolts to take it off plus the 5 that hold it to the turbo, so it's adding all of maybe 5 minutes to remove and install.
That said, I couldn't do this in this time
100%, unless gd's are that much different from g3's you can't take the turbo off without taking the downpipe off. I took my turbo off again 2 weeks ago and taking off 2 additional bolts saved hours aye
@@jwljwljwwwwl I mean you can still remove it without taking off the downpipe, but it’s an absolute bitch to do it that way lol. Totally worth the extra five minutes without question.
I agree much easier to bolt the down pipe up once the turbo is mounted
When he said he didn't need to take off the down pipe, he's not thinking normally cause of pressure..... nah that's what allowed Tim to get the turbo off in less than 30 min. Rather have more space to work. Instead of getting my ass handed to me by THAT ONE BOLT. We all know which one we're talking about 😆 🤣
People like TIM need to be in the industry. Hire him because time took to replace that was definitely under man hours. He brings in the money
Everyone’s face when he said “I might need a new turbo” 😂😂
They're faces made me believe they didn't know what he was talking about. Just goes to show if you know your shit, stick to it and see it through unto the end no matter the criticism you face.
@@tecklepheonix6344 they were just super impressed he figured it out so quickly lol

bro MY face when he said that... 😳
This is a sick series and it's honestly extremely helpful for dudes who aren't mechanics but like to pretend (like myself). Subaru was clean as hell too. Great job, guys.
Dawg, if you tryna be a mechanic, donut is not going to teach you enough. If you’re trying to be a mechanic, I’d say get familiar with sensors, they over complicate everything IMO.
@@mr.pissedoff1903 they’re a huge help too though. With a code scanner you can read any code that the car is saying is the problem it’s experiencing, coolant and oil temp, oil pressure, your LAMBDA, fuel trims, fuel pressure, boost, etc.
For example he was looking at the temp gauge to see if head gaskets were the issue. Without a sensor for that, he wouldn’t know until it started to run poorly. At which point the engine is damaging itself big time.
Also I want to say that this isn’t a mechanics degree channel by any means, but to say you don’t learn is just silly. He learned the symptoms of a blown turbo at the very least. So yeah, get familiar with sensors, because that’s how you see if something is wrong with your car lmao

this tim dude is amazing. honestly think this should become a permemant series. good to see ordinary gear heads fixing typical issues.
well done guys
I haven’t watched this yet but it’d be hilarious if it had blown head gaskets and a bad timing belt just like every other mid-00’s Subaru ever.
As soon as I heard it I thought head gasket. Haven't watched it yet.
As some with a mid-00's subie, I will be mad if he doesn't have to change a headgasket.
Typically it’s only the non turbo 2.5’s. They used a different head gasket on the turbo’d 2.5’s.
Spoiler: the turbos blown out.
It's the turbo. It's always the turbo. Even if it's the water pump or head gasket, it's still got a bad turbo.
Love the fact that I'm seeing Aaron there. I love it when he's in a series.
yes hes so good at what he does
Recently watched Hyperdrive and suprised that Aaron is on of the participant.

NEXT HIGH-LOW SHOULD BE WITH WRX'S!!!!!!
One thing I like about your videos is that you explain everything that goes on. Not only just show whatever is happening
The curse of finding a new series on Donut and binge watching them all, look forward to more of these!
If he can fix it in 3 hours it should be considered a world record
he kinda did it in 2
I mean, it’s not that hard to work on cars when you have the tools and mechanically inclined/experienced
It’s hard to modify and rebuild parts, replacing stuff is usually plug and play.
Dreaming to install a k20 in a crx or LS swap a Miata and all those crazy builds requires real skill to fabricate mounts and make mods to the chassis to take the mounts and hold the power train properly
That would be considered flat rate
This series is so awesome. Hope the budget for this kind of production continues 🙏
This is the most original idea I've seen in a long time. Nicely done guys!!!
So glad you guys put this video out. Im been chasing my tail with overheating and coolant issue. Then I watched this video. I was like "duh, wrx + turbo = FML". So thanks guys

This is their best mechanic they’ve had so far. I think I’d also like to see one of these with someone who knows nothing about cars who has to fix one using pre-recorded tutorial videos made by various Donut members.
One thing I really appreciate with these videos, is they dont do latent failures. When they sabotage something, they make sure it doesn't work at all.
