I put a split in my grip tape about an inch and a half below my bolts which is right where I set my front foot up for most kickflips. But otherwise, yes this is an interesting idea. Even just a regular grid would be helpful too to know exactly where to place your feet.
Thank you andy anderson for mapping out lines that are invisible for the normal world. For brand new skaters Or even in veteran ones may help improve foot placement and Promote consistent trick landing. Thank you, Nigel for producing this content. Please do not stop producing these films so that we may enjoy them for the rest of our lives
when you're installing the griptape, only pull little bits of the paper off at a time, andas you peel it back, you can make sure it's lined up perfectly without worrying about it sticking.
Man this is so helpful for my brain. Real innovation is seeing something everybody has looked at in a new way. Also, I hope your gnarly depression is over. Seems like it was the pain necessary to create something like this. Much love.
That conversation you just hung on at the end was so enjoyable. I felt like watching the video where Andy sets up a JM Duran Deck during Covid. The vibe is just way to good in your uncut videos. Keep going
I'm a 33 year old man and this type of video still gets me pumped up to go outside ... I nerd out too but I'm still just trying to catch up. Some of the tips here helped me on some stuff I was getting hung up on (like relearning pop shove after learning scoopy shoves) so thanks! Also this grip is cool, I wouldn't mind putting it on my board and not just imagine the lines.
What if you made it so that the backing on the grip tape came in two pieces to peel off? One of them could be before the bolts on the nose or tail. So you line up and press down the grip tape with the backing still on and then you can peel off the small part over the nose or tail and press that down. I think then it would be lined up enough to peel of the rest of the backing and press it down over the rest of the board
@@hitmonRay or 3 pieces with a removable strip in the middle, so you could line it up and center it, and then secure it in the middle, as you want to stick from the middle out ideally, otherwise you can get slightly out of line trying to do it straight from one end (doesn't matter with normal tape so much, but will with any patten that needs to be in a specific place). Deffo a good idea to split up the backing tho for sure!
I am sure many will call this "overthinking" 😀 I mean I see a lot of people have different foot placements, flick, scoop and wrap points for the same trick. It also depends on board shape and even wheels and trucks. ;-) But it looks interesting. I may consider it in case I can get my hands on a black 7ply Vajra and the grip. Currently there is a lack in supply of Powell boards in Germany, that's why I am now on a Heroin Anatomy Egg.
Some of the best inventions are simple and obvious… this is one of them! Rad sauce 🤙🏼 I realized putting the tape on peal from the middle and leave the nose and tail backing on until it’s lined up.
so I think a good name for it would also be the "flip grip :D One question I got: does it work for normal shaped boards too? last but not least I was just strongly considering to switch to some non abrasive grips just because im sick of ruining my shoes..also carrying the board would be so much more pleasant.. but thiiss out..makes out a tough call to decide.. GJ Andy
Dude line it up on the board with the backing paper on and bolts going through the grip on top..... Peel back paper from one end, pressing the grip down as you go... Remove the bolts as you come to them. I think that will be much less risky and more precise. Love ya
If you want to make it fit on any board, you could cut it in half in the middle and make the front piece and the back piece fit. In theory it should work
Andy Anderson still revolutionizing skateboarding by thinking about the basics... What an amazing mind this man has... Oh yeah. When and where can i buy this to put on my andy Anderson board?
So if you have a board with different wheel base you have weird bolt pattern in your grip? Would be better without those big dots, if anything use tiney dots
@@authenticandyanderson Cheers for the work. This should be communicated. One thing that deterred me was the thought it was exclusive to the board, which apparently it isn't.
That is a Bat-Mobile-looking griptape. First sceptical, but then makes sense. I've skated Mini-Logo trucks the most in recent 2 years and I like them the most of all, but could not keep skating them. They over-lock on the round copings - wheel gets stuck between the truck and the coping and it sucks the speed completely on 50-50-s. Also I could not adjust my position on the coping as I'm overlocked, e.g. get accidental toe-side lock on quarter and would look like little baby trying to battle invisible dragons. I just wish the hanger was straight. Weitght and wheelbase of those trucks is perfect, height is fine as it allows fun for early-pop but could be used with risers to have better scoop. MiniLogo's my favourite trucks, but the hanger is just overlocking. P.S. I don't care if Andy Anderson could avoid that overlocking, I just can't avoid that.
@@rephlexx That depends on what board I ride. Next one I tried Tensor Alloys and was surprised that their curved hanger did not annoy me at all, they also have nice technical height. Since I broke that Major Label / Nomad board, I got on Skate Mental deck, that was asking for Venture Lows, ...and I love it!
The Hendrix/Zappa analogy is great. Imagine what Hendrix could have created if he stuck around long enough learn theory. Zappa did improvise during guitar solos. Check out Stevie's Spanking with Vai... Peace!
Very cool that grip is clean like that. Even cooler, is on an asymmetrical board, I'm interested in seeing how the lines naturally change layout, but will naturally work, because it will contour to the shape. Very very cool. I will definitely support this grip. I want a sheet as soon as I can get it. Haha.
I'm still tripping on the fact that a Canadian skate legend met a Canadian rock legend ( Geddy Lee ) in Venice Beach... may get the grip for my dvargs effigy see if it lines up.
So the wheels adds the 2 missing inches per side from the trucks equivalent to the board? Like, the trucks are 8” and the board is 8,4” where the trucks are, help my brain out here trying to understand😅
I've just ordered the tape . I have the baby heron board , im putting the tape and wheels on it just to hang on the wall. Anyone have great trucks idea to finish it off?
Im gonna miss tensor maglights. Nigel is right. They’re going out of business. I have two sets left. And the fact that they grind so well means they wear down faster. Im only skating them on twin tails as a result. I might get some on ebay in the later years upcoming
Correct me if I am wrong, but he said he is riding size 8 trucks? Anyone know what size wheel he is using? Wondering if that is flush or less than flush to the rail for stable rail stands
Looks like Mini Logo 8.38" trucks , which would be like an Indy 146 in translation. That deck is an 8.4". The wheels look like Nano Cubic 52mm or 54mm 97a wheels
@@jordanisraelson8640 thanks dude! Im still super unfamiliar with truck to board sizing but looking to build this with freestyle railstands in mind so really making sure it’s going to be more flush than a normal street set up
8.5" truck Axel would be pretty close too. I've used that size on an 8.38" deck and couldn't hardly notice the difference, an 8.25" truck would be noticably inward laying tho.
@@etaks420NZ yeah exactly, but to me (not super smart in skateboard sizes) that seems like with whatever wheel size he has would that not make it slightly less flush than a regular freestyle set up?
another way you could do it is to place the whole grip on the board WITHOUT taking off the back film. Then put the front 4 bolts through the front side of the board.. Next peel the film off the back side of the tape and then slowly stick it down. THEN pull the bolts out of the front side and then peel off the rest of the film and slowly press it down.
I wonder if at any point for competitions they well ban certain board shapes as people like Andy continue to refine the shapes in order to give them an "advantage" or whatever for certain kinds of tricks. I hope they don't but I just wonder if board design evolved to a point where there became rules about it. Similarly to like how in hockey, goalie equipment started to advance to a point where rules started to develop about how wide pads, or other pieces of equipment could be because at a certain point it was seen as "cheating"
