The Dire Consequences Of Ashley Madison Leak

  • More and more people are suffering the consequences of the Ashley Madison leak. Many users have come from countries where having an affair or being gay could be punishable by death. Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian (The Point), Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick!?), Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show) hosts of The Young Turks discuss.
Do you agree with the leakers or has this gone too far? Let us know in the comments below.
    Read more here: www.rawstory.com/2015/08/heres...
Soon after the Ashley Madison details were made public Wednesday, tabloids fell all over each other to find juicy tidbits of hypocrisy and moral corruption - especially of their political enemies. Yesterday afternoon Gawker hit gold, revealing that Josh Duggar - a known pedophile and the already reigning king of rightwing hypocrites - had sought extramarital affairs on both Ashley Madison and OKCupid. In no time, the Schadenfreude-giddy blogs were basking in another Duggar scandal. But was it all worth it?
As it turns out, no. The Ashley Madison leaks, as many observers began noting yesterday afternoon, will have real world, devastating consequences on thousands of users worldwide. When the dust clears, it will be most vulnerable among us - LGBT and women in repressive countries - that will ultimately pay the price. And unlike Josh Duggar, their price will not be paid in snarky internet comments but rather loss of employment, family, and, in some cases, possibly their lives.

charlie devine If someone is cheating on you, they're lying to you, and if they're lying to you already, there's a fairly good chance that when asked they'll continue to lie. Asking questions isn't a method which always gives accurate answers.

In barbaric middle age countries, I would say It's fine but the message should still be seen more as a warning than as a demand since either way you can't get away with cheating for extended periods of time. it's simply not possible especially in the Middle East.

My mum once knew someone who was cheating on her husband. She was too scared to leave him because he was physically and verbally abusive. They eventually got divorced but if she was on Ashley Madison and the guy found out he would have destroyed her. Its not a stretch to think there are people like her on the list whose abusive partners could find out. That puts them in a world of danger. But its fine, though, because they cheated so they deserved it #morality

Chimera1591 More like people are just looking for consistency. TYT is going nuts over this; Cenk and Ana are saying that the hackers shouldn't have stolen private information. Yet, Wikileaks has illegally obtained and published information from private companies like STRATFOR, (i.e., stole) and TYT was not attacking Julian Assange over the theft of private information. And when they Wikileaks published countless private emails, how is that not stealing? Come on, TYT has to be consistent. It's not a moral issue, just one of equity.
Besides, the fact is that AM was blackmailing their own customers. They were offering to remove their records if they paid AM $20. Nope, this is much more complex than people being judgmental. And they were lying to their male customers; saying the male to female ratio was about 1:1, when it was 1:9. AM might have expected this. And what were the hackers asking for? Just for them to take the website down... no money. If AM wanted to do the right thing, they could have. Now they're website is trashed, and their customers will probably sue them.

Lots of people keep saying stuff like "too bad, they shouldn't have cheated". What about all the single people(people who weren't having an affair)? Single people aren't doing anything immoral by hooking up because they have no one to cheat on. Because of this hack, they are just as vulnerable to blackmail and humiliation as all the other people who actually did something wrong.
It's all fun and games until an innocent life gets destroyed in the process...

When talking about privacy there are different reasons why people want it. Security is one.(like passwords) Personal preference is another. (like being a private person, or not showing all of yourself to the world -bikini tops)
There may be people like this on AM, but the majority are doing something wrong. This causes harm to others, like their spouses or who they are in a relationship with. When someone is doing this type of evilness, I say its OK to expose that to the concerned parties. Maybe not the world, but this is a weird case.

It's not like the raped thousands of children or murdered many people no they only CHEATED which is bad but surly isn't worthy of death. Have some balance with your morals why don't ya. Also its a BIT more understanding when homosexuals use the sites, these are places that have homosexuality punished by death or imprisonment. Lots of them have little choice, its a fanned if you do fanned if you don't situation. Were not talking about your averages western closed homosexual who can cheat on their unsuspecting spouse without any legal trouble. Weir talking about people who who barley have any choice, who live in places were homosexuality is Illegal. It's not your typical American situation of cheating, in nanny of these countries sexuality in general is looked down upon, its looked as something that should be repressed, many of these places have arranged marriages, and homosexuality is illegal so its a bit more understanding when they cheat gay Or straight...

Whoa! I was pretty with them until Cenk was asked why they leaked the info and gave an incredibly incorrect response. They didn't threaten the site for being amoral, they were telling the site that they needed to either fully delete members private data when they paid to have their account deleted. AM was currently keeping some client data even after a paid account deletion. I'm not saying what they did was good, but it wasn't for morality.

I was reading a newspaper about this subject (and I was completely disgusted by the way) and I read that over 10000 US military servicemen were on the list... They can now be subjected to violent attacks by extremists in their own homes because of this. Those men and women (though mostly men) who fought and defended this country can now be robbed from and attacked because of this leak. Exposing personal information and privacy is one thing, but leaving the brave men and women who fought to defend you vulnerable to attack because of what you did in your own self righteous interests is a complete and utter betrayal that cannot be described in the English language. I hope that the people who are now in mortal danger for their participation on the site will fade into obscurity and rebuild their lives, and for those who put them in danger, I hope you get appropriately prosecuted.

Actually, my mind has just been changed by this. It was the case that I was not really bothered by the AM leak. I was thinking like, if you didn't want your family life ruined, maybe don't cheat on your spouse, for fuck sake!
But no, this is a really good point. I am embarrassed now but I have to admit I did not think about the people on the site who might be harmed even through they're not cheating. I'm especially concerned about the people who live in super shitty countries that would jail, murder, or otherwise harm people b/c of this.

The practice of covert infidelity should be publicized. I understand if it was just a 'fantasy' site but it appears to be much more than that. A medium in which users intent is to be unfaithful could be perceived as being immoral. Instead of considering the 3% of users that could be chastised/punished severely, consider the 97% of infidels who, instead of breaking up or working it out with their spouse, reduced to cheating/lying.

Yale University This is what happens when you put your business online. If you want to keep a secret, never ever do anything online. Eventually you will get caught, either by hacker, or accidentally leave something up and not close out, or someone just figuring out your password. It's not a matter of if you get caught, but when. Never use your e-mail, or your main cell phone. Always use a burner phone and keep it in a safe place that's not at work or home. The less people know the better, and if you cheat then be honest with your mistress, and finally "Don't crap where you eat" meaning, don't screw around with someone who is close to you, or who lives in the vicinity and if you do don't be seen together and meet at a hotel somewhere out of town. You people need to learn how to be deceptive. Too bad money doesn't buy brains. If your going to sin, then do it right. This is just helpful advice.

Secret info leaks tend to come with consequences. That's why it's secret info to begin with. Where do you draw the line? A cheater's a cheater, doesn't matter what the game is. Relationships, politics, hockey - I feel bad for the unintended harm, but still have no sympathy for the cheaters. I don't think people should have to put up with fake relationships (whether or not they realize they're in one) any more than I think the LGBT community should be fearful of religious nutcases. Both circumstances are unacceptable from my point of view. The leak? That's not for me to say, only those involved. I'm sure there are just as many who appreciate it as those who don't.

I find Ana's argument about legality in this matter ridiculous. Generally I can respect her opinion, but this is the only story where I have heard her reference legality as a a justifiable accusation against an action.
Need I remind you all that Ana regularly admits to smoking pot all the time on the show. That is also illegal. Never once have I heard her make that excuse, so I find it pretty laughable here. Yes, black hat hacking is illegal. No one is arguing about that, but legality and morality are two different things.
I feel like the MORALITY of the situation is a bit grey. These people are using a website specifically built for the purpose of cheating. This hacker, who ever s/he is, isn't outing these people for moral reasons. They are most likely doing it from the perspective of someone that has been spurned by a lover. Regardless, they have some kind of vendetta.
Also, really don't care about the privacy of the people that were using this website for cheating. I feel like if I suspected that my spouse was cheating, I would be grateful for a resource that this hacker has provided for it. I really couldn't care less about the privacy of people on the list. They are doing something extremely shitty in cheating on their spouses.
Also, what is this about the gay Saudi dude? Why was he using a cheating website to pick up men? That makes no sense whatsoever.

  • @ParadeofCrows

As much as I really do not want anyone to be hurt physically or be in danger, these people are still failing to draw sympathy from me, if one cheated on their spouse they made that decision, regardless of whether their relationship is emotionally destitute or whatever else, I don't think there is any excuse to make the concious decision to have an affair whilst still in a relationship, it is despicable and leaving the other person in question in the dark indefinitely about such actions is nothing more than childish and pathetic. If you want to fuck around thats fine, but don't have a pretend monogamous relationship on the side because you don't care about other people's lives.
Even in the cases of abusive relationships that maybe be anchored by children, yes this is terrible, but why the hell are you having an affair on the side and putting you and/or your children in further danger? Work on getting out of the fucking relationship first. Fucking priorities.
I agree its not my business whether these people are cheating, but it is their partner's business, they shouldn't be mislead into staying in a relationship and wasting years of their lives because the person cheating on them doesn't have the balls to admit it.
Again of course I do not agree with the people that may exploit this information to heinously punish others, but then the site is marketed specifically for affairs and I highly doubt these cases apply to the vast majority of people using said site.
TYT coverage of this has just been annoying, I get it the hack is fundamentally wrong, but can you people please make a distinction that many of the victims of the victims in this case are having their lives destroyed as well, I'm tired of all this apologists talk taking the side of the Ashley Madison users, at least fucking address that what these people are doing, at least in the majority of relevant cases here, is malicious and hurtful to others. 'Nuff said.

As much as I can understand what this video is saying, it still blows my mind into a million pieces. Sure, SOME people using AM were single... but that still doesn't change the fact the site is there to promote ADULTERY, and many users are MARRIED. The message here is that AM and it's users are the victims... what about the spouses of the people using the site that DIDN'T KNOW or WEREN'T OKAY... wouldn't they be worse victims?
It's like when the one brunette mentioned the username "sexlessmarriage", and I couldn't help but think... why the hell are you making an excuse to make this okay!? If the username states they're in a marriage, and there's no sex, if it's THAT big an issue... here's a thought, first try communication with the spouse, if not that, then probably dump just as much money, or less, into a marriage-counselor or sex-therapist, and then if it's still that big a deal, move on out of there, etc... instead, "oh no, we don't know their story... it's perfectly fine to skirt the laws against prostitution and actually pay money for a chance to connect your private body parts with the spouse of somebody else... why not, it's all good". WTF!? o_O
PS - As for the anonymous gay man example they gave at the beginning, I truly have sympathy for them... but in that scenario, they probably would have been better off going to a gay bar, gay club, craig's list, online gay personals like Yahoo, etc... or bunches of other routes... one should have expected that a website that pretty much states right in their byline that they're all about promoting cheating on spouses and being promiscuous that something like this was BOUND TO HAPPEN. xD

These people were aware of the consequences of their actions. If you live in a country in which you can be put to death for cheating, don't register for a website that is focused on allowing you to cheat. Do I think cheating is worthy of death? No, I don't, I don't think there should be any legal repercussions whatsoever for it, it's a personal affair that shouldn't have anything to do with the government. That being said, if the punishment is established, whether it's right or wrong, you have to deal with it if you commit the crime.

The distinction between the crime of cheating on someone, and the crime of murder, is that no one dies when someone is cheating.
