    A lesson in letting go and going with with the flow! If it weren't for our tire debacle, we wouldn't have made new friends with Ryan and his pa, getting to share some local brew in his workshop. It's really the people that make life special. What do you think?
    Also, any experience with Kumho tires? The brand is new to us, but Google says they're great!

      Kumho is the brand of tires that my husband used to use on his cars delivering mail. He put on 135 miles every day 6 days a week. He’s retired now.

    Congrats on the new tool box. Yes very important to check the age of tires. Especially traveling long distance with lots of weight. Love your resourcefulness.

    Now this is the kind of video I subscribed to see!! The original build was why I subscribed.

      Thanks for reaching out! The channel started out with our build but once we were on the road it did shift a bit more towards hiking and climbing.
      But we'll make sure we cover any major upgrades and changes. We still want to show you a review of our tools and gadgets (e.g. our air compressor and our cell booster).
      We also want to go over our entire build cost, so that's gonna come up as well.
      Let us know if you're interested in any other aspect of the van that we missed and you'd wish to know more about!

    I was walking in my neighborhood last week and suddenly I heard a rattling and a loud hiss! There was a small rattlesnake on the side of the road that scared the crap out of me! I'm actually glad they hiss and rattle because, if it didn't, I never would have seen it! They are very well camouflaged.
    Getting bit by a rattle snake while on a long hike is terrible because you can't afford to walk hours back after being bitten. You pretty much have to get air lifted to a hospital, which is very expensive (at least here in the USA with our terrible healthcare). Some people wear snake guard things on their legs while hiking, which prevent rattlesnakes from biting through

    There is a product called fluid film that neutralizes salt and prevents corrosion . It's a little pricey but it works great .

      @@RoadtoPitches the cool thing, is it's made from lanolin so you can spray it on anything.

    Enjoy the island! Haha the tire story reminded me of my first Canadian truck buying experience, turned out that the good looking tires on it were actually 5 years older than the truck itself 😁 and the rubber had basically turned into brittle plastic, so after the first offroading the tread looked like the surface of a gravel road because so much was broken of.. fun times.

    • @RoadtoPitches
      @RoadtoPitches  3 года назад +2

      They should teach some of that stuff in school😂 image how many bad tires could be off the road if they taught that single sentence: check your tire age when purchasing cars or tires ^^

    • @ochjoo77

      Seeing how overpriced the car market is already, my guess is that the seller would add the price of new tires 2x to what they would have asked before.

    I have been looking for a spare tire so I contacted some of vanlife community I keep in touch with to see what tires they are running. Lots of answers but one of the more common answer is the Falcon Wildpeak AT/3W tires 10 ply. A good all terrain tread at a reasonable price. I am going with a 265/70R/16. It's basically the same diameter/height as the factory 245/75R/16 and about one inch wider. The extra width will help with the sand/snow/mud and on road performance.
    I always enjoy your videos and a thumbs up 👍

      We had also looked into wider tires but in the end we're driving like 98% of our km on the road. So I rather have the fuel efficiency. All the FSRs have been in decent shape for our tires and hopefully I never have to drive on snow with our van😂

    Door to hide the tire from thieves?

    • @RoadtoPitches
      @RoadtoPitches  3 года назад +3

      Yes that will be the next addition. Not very concerned where we are currently but there's other, more sketchy places. I'm going to add a lock and it's certainly also better if you don't see it right away.

    Re: the aluminum box- aluminum welding is not to be relied upon given the constant vibration and stress. All those welds should have been reinforced with mechanically fastened brackets. Nothing wrong with the box as long as improvements are implemented from the beginning.
    The TV show '60 Minutes' did a segment on tires. As they said the date of manufacture is embedded in code on the tire. Just because you buy a "new" tire does not mean it has not been sitting in a warehouse for years.

    Hey guys, watching that install of the outside box and wondering if you water proofed it? love you guys. If not, this one will leak also.

    • @RoadtoPitches
      @RoadtoPitches  3 года назад +2

      The box has a rubber seal around the flap, beyond that we didn't add anything. Of course the screw holes got some Sikaflex.
      So far everything stayed dry! But the box is also a bit further inwards under our truck box. So less rain makes it on there from the top.
      The major issue with the old tool box were the big holes in the ceiling and that the door was not properly sealed.

    Have you weighed the Box Rig? Are the tires and being a single axle rig. rated for the weight?
    Looks like a dusky set up for a box camper would be more adequate. Just sayin

  • @daveholte7658

    Always learning
    Shelf life or expiration date should be explained by dealers to what you are actually getting
    Tires could have been stored in sun? Or ? Abs makes them have less life on them
