Off the top of my head the only park that will benefit from the S&S single rail is Blackpool Pleasure Beach to prolong the life of Steeplechase. Which aside from Blue Flyer (the kiddie coaster) is probably the worst coaster in the park, I even prefer Infusion and that’s the coaster equivalent of being in a blender.

That would be an absolute blast for the park! Steeplechase is an interesting ride, but it's had its day, and its literally a kids car ride with bumps these days. The land its on lends itself for an interesting and long coaster that could even be a racer type

It's more a difference of construction technique as well as ride style and appearance. They can be small but intense, since the narrow wheelbase relative to the size of the "rail" promotes a small vehicle. Less supports (maybe not as few as attempted...). But the small vehicle means small lateral moments, needing/allowing the rider to be close to the track, or requiring a huge track.
I think RMC should look into a central spine for Ibox for higher spans. The spine would still be smaller than Trex would be, and simpler.

    • @spentron1

I've had the same argument on why there's no real distinction between single-rail and "double-rail". Basically if you make the B&M crossties and spine so thick that they fill in the gaps, you'd have a single rail.

  • @crooked-halo

I've ridden all 5 of RMCs Raptors & their very good, incredibly intense rides. Restraints aren't _too_ uncomfortable & mostly during high negative Gs. The problems with Raptors are downtime and capacity. All suffer high downtime. This is new technology & they're highly complex rides, running trains close together in tight blocks on short circuits. I've been in this hobby since 1981 & _every time_ gimmicks, new technology or record-breaking statistics come into play, roller coasters fail more often. Capacity is poor. 8 or 12 riders per train, 3 trains max, for a throughput of 430 PPH with 2 trains, 600 PPH with three on the smaller Raptors. This assumes efficient dispatch times. Loading is a problem, trains don't stop, which is confusing, riders putting their stuff away, the restraint is complicated to some to get into. I've noticed something else; stress. Since there's often 3 trains out, circuits are quick, and operations are stricter & faster there seems to be more stress in the station than with other rides & coasters. I've blabbed enough. Raptors are insanely powerful, fun coasters, but like most steel coasters, to me, they get old quickly, which is why I'm a passionate wood coaster hobbyist.

"Coaster enthusiasts instantely thought this would catch on." Not true! I remember there being a lot of speculation in the enthusiast community that Raptor models would be too low capacity and the single file trains would suck the joy out of riding with a friend. When Railblazer opened a lot of people thought the Raptor was just going to be another boring cloned model but as the design has evolved and has been embraced by more manufacturers, I think single rails have become more universally accepted. Still waiting on the first 500 ft T-Rex though 😅

A few thoughts, I think RMCs intention is to have the raptor go up to around 150ft, ground up I-Box's, like Aire Force One, to cover from there up to around 225ft and the T-Rex to handle anything taller. Nothing says they have to cover every possibility with a single rail. And the whole 500ft T-Rex has really been blown out of proportion. All they said was that the design was flexible enough to go that high if a park wanted it, not that that was the purpose of the design. I fully expect the first T-Rex(if there ever is one) to be well below 300ft. Unless, like you mention Qiddyia wanted the 500ft for bragging rights.
Skyline has already revealed their TrailRunner design which is a step up from the P'Sghetti Bowl. A general family coaster instead of a junior coaster. I'm sure parks are waiting to see how the P'Sghetti Bowl turns out before considering it.
I'd say the Railrunner is S&S's attempt to salvage their R&D from the steeplechase. I doubt there are many parks where the steeple chase would make sense, but the Railrunner with a train of 12 seats would probably work in a lot of parks.
On your last topic I'd agree that single rail is just a marketing term. Looking at Intamin's website for the Hot Racer, I could only find one mention of single rail on there and that's in reference to it being the world's first launched single rail. After that there's no mention of single rail on the site or PDF product flyer.

I have been thinking the same about single rails not really being single rails since the get go. In cases like the raptor, the extra steel is probably cheaper than the welding work of making two separate rails.
However, the T-rex is a pretty egregious example of a "single rail". It looks like a stock standard two rail coaster train on top of a large metal plate, to make it technically a single rail. I also think that one reason it hasn't caught on is that the extra steel to make it a single rail probably costs more than a standard dual rail coaster track of similar durability. Why pay extra for an expensive coaster from a company with a track record as sketchy as RMC? It simply isn't a reasonable risk for parks. RMC might have to take a big financial L to sell a prototype.

Do T-Rexes need to be over 400’ tall? 🤔 I thought it was more about the single rail, but with two riders per row as opposed to a Raptor’s single-file train. A T-Rex would be good starting at maybe 200’-250’ feet, I’d say even more like 150’-200’, just as a preliminary model. Not that I lack faith in RMC… but to go straight to 500’ is a huge jump on a new product. It would probably sell better at hypercoaster size at first..

I had included links in my post, maybe that´s why it got nixed by YT.
These are actually "real" monorail coasters as the cars are "hugging" the rail instead of travelling on top like the new versions.
