Hi Glenn! I think I said in a comment on your first video that you had inspired me to finally start learning to fly. Well, next Tuesday I have the check out flight for my licence, so thank you very much! More cooking/aviation channel crossovers please!
You and your wife are goals.... I'm not kidding, you both seem so happy and content in each other's presence along with the fact you both are very knowledgeable and easy to listen to. I wish nothing but good fortune for you both as you continue your journey on this rock :) -Corey from Tampa, Florida.
Your title threw me for a moment. I was expecting you to be flying to the Western Isles of Scotland. A nice surprise to see such beautiful scenery and lovely weather, no so common in the Scottish Isles.
Hey Glenn, i was in the 172 that day ahead of you guys flying the parallel universe lol. That was a great day and glad to see the bikes worked out for you. The landings in Tobermory are always kind of wonky it seems maybe because of the wind blowing sideways from the lake over the trees. You mentioned your adsb, is it diversity enabled and i assuming its part of your dynon system? Joe
Ah, memories of flying into non tower busy events and keeping your head on a swivel. Always helps when you have a cute copilot to give another set of eyes. Always fun riding with you two on your adventures.... ps, enjoy watching the cooking stuff too, ;p)
Taking off is my favourite part of flying. Landing means the fun is over. Full adoption of ADS-b would certainly take some task saturation away. It’s easily a top 5 concern for me, trying to locate nearby aircraft by line of sight. Killer hat btw
Something about the fast acceleration during takeoff and watching the ground move further down in the windows is so cool. It signals to the brain that we're really flying like birds. I love it.
Hey Glen, that was a great day trip adventure with some beautiful scenery. Thanks for taking us along with you & Julie. Looking forward to the next one! 👍👍
Thanks for filming your flights. They bring back a lot of memories. I got my PPL in 1979 training out of Wiarton. It was great to see that area feom the air again.
Glenn, THANK-YOU for these videos. I’m living vicariously through these. I’ve had to settle for being an sUAS “pilot” and your videos help take the sting out of not being able to fly. I flew as an observer in rotorcraft for over 25 years and miss it terribly. Keep the videos coming. Oh and my wife and also enjoy your food and cocktail videos.
Hey Glen and Julie! I just recently subscribed to your Glen's Hangar channel. I truly feel like I am there with you! Thank you for sharing your adventures with us! I am also subscribed to your Glen and Friends channel. Keep these amazing videos coming. Be well!
Hi Glenn, In my ultralight days I had a partial solution to this. I used a handheld portable radio with a "rubber duckie" antenna. It was so weak that if I could hear them, they were close. If they could hear me, they were really close. It spared me hunting for traffic so far away it wasn't a threat! A simpler time. JD
A friend put me onto your RUclips videos, loved it. It took me back to my solo cross country: Kincardine, Stratford, Wiarton. PS future episode Kincardine and we have a cross strip for those unpredictable winds. Happy flying.
I like how you have your 172 set up for two people. In all the years I've been flying I didn't have very many sit in the back. Good use of the space for bikes and for me Camping was always the use for it. Your camera work is coming along NICELY !!
I have been through Tobermory several times on motorcycle trips to catch the Chi-Cheemaun ferry to Manitoulin Island. We then ride off the other end of the island through Little Current.
Lovely video! Wonderful scenery and content! Perfect editing. Your landings were great! You know what they say…”Any landing that you can limp away from….”😊
Loved that last landing, Glen. Loved the whole flight! Love the bikes. (...too bad about the butter tarts, I’m sure you can "reverse engineer" a couple back at your bat cave/kitchen... 😁)
Fun trip! We have yet to stop at Tobermory (again) ourselves...it's been a long time. Collingwood is a great spot too..we've zipped up there for dinner after work and came back in darkness...spectacular moon that night!
Wow. here I've been watching your cooking channel for years and had no idea that you were a pilot. I've been working on my PPL for the last year! Will be watching more!
Oh wow, CYOO is the airport I'm training at! First video on youtube I've seen based out of the exact airport I am flying from :) Maybe I'll see your plane or hear you on ATC one day
Hi Glenn, I’m new to your channel and I really like the way your videos give a feel for being in the plane. I’m a pilot that hasn’t flown in 19 years, but will be going back to it. You keep saying your landings aren’t great, but I think they’re pretty good. Thanks for the great videos.
I dunno Glen, the landing(s) at Tobermory, maybe you can count them as two? LOL Nice one coming back home, though, that was sweet. MVU is handling its duties well, you did a nice job on her. Can't wait to see the interior.
I wish i had known you were going to Tobermory. I would have taken the day to come up an visit. If you are ever going to Saugeen Municipal airport ( Hanover, (CYHS), mention it so I can meet you two! Yes I got hooked on Glen and Friends first.
I'm loving these flying videos Glen. Especially this one. I'm afraid I haven't been there since I was a kid, but I have strong family ties to Tobermory, or "The Tub" as my family calls it. Sorry you missed out on your butter tarts. I'm Team Firm BTW.
As usual, great flying/traveling video. Yes before my dad was laid off at Orenda engines in Toronto, we used to vacation at Wasauga Beach in the 1950’s. Since I’ve ended up in MO (USA). I’ve missed out on butter tarts! Soft is truly messy, but firm is my goal. Thanks for some audio of the flight, but great video/reasonable conversation. I would suggest you try some sailplane flying, every flight starts out with formation flying, every landing is a dead stick! Next time send some beer to Travels with Geordie in Vancouver!
@@sidb9540 IMHO, large lake is NOT a good idea. We watch flights in NZ over small lakes with no problem. Old urban tale about the pilot on west coast who followed sea gulls until they flapped their wings and flew back to shore! Large body of water can be big sink!
This reminds me of the first time I tried to go to World's Best Donuts in Grand Marais. It would take months or perhaps a whole other year before I would find out that they were indeed... okay.
Oh this is fun!!! Family lives in Owen Sound. Tobermory, Meaford, Lions Head, Blue Mtn. all fun and familiar for us: on our Harley. There's a great week pub in Lion's Head! Cypress Lake Park up that way, you could ride the bikes there, too. We enjoyed the glass bottom boat ride to Flower Pot Is. I was laughing at your subtitles, because I knew exactly what was meant, but not transcribed correctly. This is fun watching cuz I know Collingwood too(woot, Elvis Festival attendees for many yrs since 1999, which was close to the start.) Happy and safe flying!!😊
Looking great guys! love the bikes, first I've ever seen that folds but looks and apparently rides like a "real" bike. Very cool. So... What the hek is a butter tart? (american here probably why I dont know lol) and are you going to do a video making them? ;)
With that other traffic at 4500, not being able to see them and them not being on ADS-B, how tempted were you to climb to 6500 or descend to 2500? Being from Chicago, and growing up on Lake Michigan before the zebra muscles filtered everything, looking down on the water at Lion's Head from the rock was absolutely stunning - clear and blue like you imagine a tropical water to be, just much more cold. The Helix bikes look great, and if they aren't too harsh (TI is super stiff) all the more impressive!
Glen please tell us ( or a video) about flight insurance, hanger rental and maintenance costs of your Cessna... would love to know how much it costs as I'm sure folks here are looking to get into the sport ( more planes for you to look out for in the sky in the future :P)
Great vid Glen and don’t sweat the landings! What are those bikes? They would be perfect for the RV14 I’m building! Looking forward to the next flight with you 👍
Great video as always, Glen! What day were you there? We flew over Tobermory on Sunday, on the way to Manitoulin and Gore Bay. I've never landed at Tobermory, but it's definitely on our list.
Shame you can't fly it but it sounds like you need to arrange some sponsorship for these flights from Tobermory Whisky from just across that North Atlantic puddle
20:19 "They're all white, which means we're high".... Glen, if they turn into blacklights, then you're *really* high :) So, since you're robbed of another local delicacy, should we expect a butter tart recipe on the main channel?
I found one of your Butter Tart episodes and made some earlier today. I made the crust a little dry, but all in all they turned out good. Cheers from California
Hi Glenn! Great video! Thank you for posting it. So, on Monday I bought my first plane. It just happens to be a 172B. So far I love everything but the panel. How do you like Dynon? It looks to be a really nice and affordable option. Any dislikes so far? Anything that is outstanding?
I love the Dynon panel - so much 'bang for the buck' and a really easy install / setup. The video being released on Oct 29 is one where I give an inflight rundown of the things I like / dislike about the panel. All of the dislikes are things I knew going in: The Dynon AutoPilot isn't certified for the 172B airframe, the Dynon intercom isn't certified - things like that.
All told less than 30 hours to install - mind you we had already ripped out everything that was there, and then rebuilt the electrical system before putting in the Dynon. There was down time as well as we went back and forth on the layout and testing locations for each system.
Hi Glenn just wondering how you like the wing x extensions ? I have a 172 float plane I’m contemplating the wing x but have heard that they make the aircraft float in ground effect what are your thoughts so far with the wing x I have a Horton stol installed 160 hp with power flow exhaust
The biggest problem I’m having right now with my landings is the ‘float’ from the wing extensions. I flew a non modified 172 last week and landing was easy - a whole lot easier! But on taking off the plane jumps up faster, and I know that once I get past my fear of flying as slow as the plane now goes (stalls in the low 30mph range) landing will be easier and the floating will go away.
Canadian registered planes are generally C-F / CF - (Registered prior to 1974 - ish), or CG- (after 1974), or CI- (ultralights). The 'C' isn't specifically for Canada; a bunch of other countries also use registration marks that start with 'C': Morocco, Portugal, Uruguay, Chile, and a few more that I can't remember.
Congrats on that landing! (not a pilot, here. Just a biker.) I got myself a "tern node 24" wheels bicycle to fold into the trunk of my car. To make longer turns to forage mushrooms.
