Great video Glenn. Feels right at home in your 172! Interesting review of Dynon and looking forward to your insights on GoPro and soon to arrive replacements!
Another great video, thanks for sharing, Glen! So glad to hear you’ll be using the DJI Osmo Action 3 cameras soon, much better than GoPros. Also, after 2 years and 200+ hours of flying behind a glass panel in my 172M I do agree 100%, putting in a Dynon HDX was the very best decision I could have made. It makes flying in our increasingly complex modern airspace environment much safer and more enjoyable. Bravo!! 👍

Have enjoyed your journey although my wife thinks it is weird that I have spent hours in the evenings watching some guy work on airplanes. I am 66 years old and just bought a 1964 182 last month after 8 years out of aviation that has a good airframe with low SMOH but 1980's avionics and original scattered panel. No engine monitor or autopilot and the gauges that even work are marginal. Plan to also upgrade to Dynon with Dynon autopilot/EM. Prior owner 95% stripped the paint so currently starting the polishing process. Basically starting down a very similar path as you have trod. I live in north central Arkansas so if you are ever through visiting family we have hanger space, courtesy car, spare room if needed.
Beautiful and functional panel. I'm going with Dynon in my M-4, 220C Maule so your video was very informative. Thanx much, Glen and safe flying ... Hawk ^v^
I use the AOA audio out as I'm landing so I don't have to look at the indicator on the Dynon, at least that's on a SkyView Classic. Wow your camera on the Dynon is steady. Your plane is free of vibration!
Appreciate your thought on the panel, I had wondered if it lived up to your expectation, if you were really happy with it. Gotta say too, I figure plane on the ground is a good landing, walking away is a great one, makes those here fantastic because they were so smooooth! You've certainly worked out any bugs you had with it a couple videos back.
I'm finally taming the float caused by the WingX extensions - I've had to completely re-work what a 'normal' 172 landing looks like. Speed, sink, glide angle, and altitude turning to base are all totally different than what you learn, or what's in the POH.
I gave up on GoPro about 8 years ago. Since then I've used Drift Ghost X cameras. Most of the same features of the GoPro at ~1/3d the cost. I shoot at 1080P/30fps and I am happy with the results. Out of the box, they claimed 5 hours but the reality was 3. With the larger battery, the claimed 8 but the reality is 5. One great feature is you can rotate the camera in the housing so mounting and getting the image orientation is a snap. The Ghost X was $99 but it is no lnger avaiable. They replaced it with the Ghost XL at $149. Still cheaper than a GoPro. The app is better than GoPor's well. The downside is their customer service is terrible but if I have to replace one at 2-3 years for $149 I'm good with that.
Thanks for doing the video, as always very well done! I enjoy the explanation of the controls and plane operation. Please keep us up to date on the GoPro problem. Looking forward to Osmo review. 👍🏼
Wonderful video! Thanks for the general info about Dynon. It was a natural question since the panel upgrade…and you answered it wonderfully. I look forward to future videos. I also have a 172B!
if you have issues with gopros turning off, try a better quality sd card. This helped me at least. It happens when the sd card does not support the required bandwidth for saving video on the fly. Alternatively try smaller video quality settings.
Problem with flap on take off when not needed is the extra drag in the case of a engine failure! Your glide ratio is extremely effected. Yes you can put them up, but when shit hits the fan, will you remember? Always good habit to talk to yourself what you will do, in the event of a engine failure right before you take the runway. Gets that muscle memory going. Airline pilots do it on every take off!
Great tour of your panel, Glen. I agree completely about Dynon's AoA indicator which should be much more prominent. It would be cool if they offered the ability to send the signal to an external indicator you could mount on the glareshield, similar to what Alpha Systems offers. That way, it's up high in your line of sight. Glass is great but I much prefer an analog style display as backup for either AoA or airspeed.
Hey Glen. Looks like you've been working on your landings... the two in this video looked like butter, a bit of float on the first maybe but very smooth.
Sadly the current line-up of Garmin cameras are pretty lame, it's like they cut down on the number of models they make and took a giant leap backwards in picture quality and usability.
RE: Sizes of screen elements - I went with an MGL over a Dynon on my Experimental aircraft because the MGL lets you completely customize every screen element (MGL is not for Certified aircraft). While the MGL saved me some $$ and I enjoy the customizability, I am 100% going Dynon with my next aircraft! The Dynon is built better, it does not produce as much EM/RF interference, and it "just works". I know good people working at both companies, but if you can swing the $ cost for the Dynon, do it and you won't regret it!
GoPro’s absolutely baffle me. I have Hero 4s and have wanted to upgrade for YEARS but none of the follow on GoPro’s have been even remotely better and mostly have been worse in the terms of reliability and I refuse to spend the money. I’ll be curious to see what you think of the Osmos. My requirement is the ability to start multiple cameras via one app on my phone that can run in the background
I'm looking forward to your discussion about gopros and alternatives. I have found the type of memory card makes a huge difference but I'm sure you already know that. Overall I'm not happy with them either. My main problem is battery life in the cold - or lack thereof.
Noticed the cardellini clamp on the wing spar right before you mentioned working in “film.” You pointed out the lower ledge on the Dynon panels, but it looks like the lip around them as they sit a bit proud of the panel is also critical as a place to anchor your fingers when using the touch screen. I’m definitely interested to hear how the DJI cameras work for you. Is there an option for time code like the Tentacle app screen? Also looking forward to the next scenic fall colors video!
I've switched to mostly DJIs Action 3s, had zero overheating problems, even here in Saigon in the middle of the day. What is that lovely grip you are using to attach to the roof?
I seem to remember the negative reviews for GoPro cameras really started to pile up when they went 'real' 4K recording-- something about the CPU used in the GoPro can't really handle the processing load for true 4K but they've either been too cheap to go to a better processor or they can't fit a better cpu into their defined chassis. Since it is your plane, couldn't you got a different route with cameras and have them record back to a laptop you put in the cabin? Kinda like a security camera setup? It would give you access to better cameras- even swivel mounts that you remotely control- while removing the processing and storage tech from hanging off a wing. A lot of those cameras operate over POE (power over ethernet) so it would simply be a case of running RJ45 cables to each location and you could use heavily shielded cables to avoid any sort of interference.
It would be great to do different cameras - but sadly any 'permanent mount' on this type of certified aircraft is a whole kettle of fish that I can't afford.
That was a great video Glen. The Dynon looks like it was an amazing upgrade. Like a few others have said I like this type of video and looking forward to the others you have mentioned. Quick question and I ask this as a non-pilot with no expertise. You mention that you take off with 20 deg of flaps. I do fly Flight Sims and to try and get a more realistic experience I read and follow the POH for each aircraft. In the POH I have( for a newer 172) it recommends no more than 10 degs of flap for takeoff. Is your new more stol like wing the reason you can use more. Again, not any sort of criticism, just curious. Thanks again for all your work putting these out.
The POH for this model 172B gives the option for 10º or 20º flaps for takeoff but no more than 20º. With the WingX extensions, STOL cuff, and VG's I've found that 20º just seems to work best... but in an unmodified 172, I don't think that would be the case. I'm still testing between having 20º in when starting the takeoff roll, and starting the roll then adding 20º when I reach 30MPH. Having manual flaps gives more options than electric flaps.
The HDX has it's own wifi network, as long as your iPad is connected to the HDX network it's one button to press in ForeFlight to send the flight plan over.
Hey, great video! I have a 1962C and fly out of CSX7. I have been looking at this as an option as well. What is the autopilot option you are looking at?
Very nice presentation! How on earth do you practice the Dynon at learning stage?? I just cannot fly and “practice” all its functions and on the ground it depletes the battery. I can’t believe they hadn’t made a simulator of this thing.
When these glass panels first came out, they were incredible. But nowadays, with 12"+ displays in cars just to control the audio and hvac, the displays on systems like Dynon and Garmin seem puny and cramped. Better to just put a six pack of steam gauges on the panel and use a couple of ipads with something like Flightview EFIS.
Yeah - I priced out a brand new setup of '6 pack steam gauges'; then added in the cost of replacing the radios, and adding ADS-B, etc. Went with Dynon because it's a unified package, it has deeper back-up / redundancy... and it came to half the price when equipment cost + panel cost + installation was all tallied up.
I have several of "those cheap RED Komodo cameras" that I use along with lots of other cameras at my production company. The Komodos are way too big to mount outside on a wing, and add a layer of complexity that I don't want to deal with. I want to fly the plane, not worry about cameras.
@@GlensHangar So, no knocking of "those cheap RED Komodo cameras" intended. I say cheap as for a RED camera they are significantly "less expensive" than the big boy RED cameras. I'd love to see how good the Komodo is, but I don't have 5K laying around. ;-) And, sure, I totally understand "worrying about cameras." I've had several bad dreams about losing my cameras on set...
Good to see the video. As to the cameras, have you considered going with something like the the Insta360 One series cameras? Those would be interesting from a creativity point of view. Not my channel, not my decision, but if I were creating video, after watching this, I doubt I would use the fuselage mounted camera again. I just didn't like that view. The one that appeared on the pilot's side wing spar was pretty cool, though. I did like that view. What autopilot are you considering? I just saw the Trio A/P would be certified for your older 172, and they are somewhere working on a Dynon Skyview interface, but not sure where they are on that. Which one were you planning on going with? Too bad Dynon isn't going to support your older 172, though I think the Skyview system looks nice. I did hear though that some of the other autopilot installs weren't all that great, and you had to reuse older servos, but I don't know the details. Anyway, I'm waiting to see what kind of cameras you come up with, and also the interior. Oh, by the way, what is it about Canadian private pilots who are great at making videos who also are in the film industry? You going to join the Canadian Aviation Museum, too? 😅😝😛
I've spoken to Dynon and Trio about the Trio system... sounds like a great setup with great features. But certification and communication with the Dynon could be a year or two away; no real defined timeline.
@@GlensHangar Well Glen, I'm sure in the upcoming video we'll see what you're going to be getting. It would be really nice if Dynon certified for the earlier 172s, but I'll wait for that video to see where you're going with it. I do enjoy watching your channel and seeing MVU in the air.
Despite my years at CFB Cold Lake Alberta, I never got comfortable driving on the airfield. I usually had to get the tower to walk me through it. I don't think that I could have made a good pilot.
Glen is it possible that your wing mounted GoPro is trying to operate BELOW its operating range? Is it too cold? Just a hunch. Keep the vids coming...love the Hangar and the cooking shows.
Through the summer and fall it's well within temperature range - winter will be a different story, I'll report back when we have our first -20ºC or below flying day.
AoA is 'Angle of Attack' - it's the angle of the wing relative to flight (+ other factors), and it gives you a better idea of when the wing will stall Vs. just knowing stall speed. There is a video where we instal an auto pilot, but choices are limited with these earlier 172 models.
Hi Glen, I am wannebee pilot from the Netherlands. I watch all your videos from front to back. Great inspiration. I know what you feel with those GoPro’s. Could there be an issue with the SD cards? Are the operating temperatures within range of the SD card? Maybe that could be hard to know/measure as the temperature inside the GoPro and the airflow inside is hard to predict. But maybe you can switch it to the other wing. Or for an experiment turn it to shoot the other direction.
At this point I've tested through about 20 different memory cards (manufacturer, line, size, etc) and find they make a huge difference - so far on the wing operating temps are within range for the cards. Inside the cabin I had to find cards that worked within a higher temperature range. I've pretty much taken the SD card out of the equation when it comes to reliability with the GoPros... I will add that the cards that ship with the cameras (and that GoPro recommend) are the worst performers.
G,day Glen from Sydney Australia. I'd like to get my hands on the Dynon skyview PFD to practice it's features. The Cessna's fuel plumbing: are the fuel gauges accurate? Moreover, are you placing excessive wearing on the flow value changing L to R. 🇭🇲🌏
The fuel gauges on this install are incredibly accurate (the Dynon engine management system helps a lot) - no excessive wear on the fuel selector valve, it's pretty sturdy.
Hard to nail down - the equipment cost is easy, Dynon has a great tool for getting the exact cost on their website. They are very transparent on what equipment you need and what the end cost will be. I ordered based on that and had no surprises, other than one cable I didn't measure correctly and had to order a longer one. Installation is harder, I ended up doing most of the grunt work and Chris didn't charge shop time for that. He really just charged a few hours for things I wasn't comfortable with and for the inspection paperwork.
@@GlensHangar Great video Glen. I'm having the same issue. 10' wont fit, or it has to be offset to the right not centered over the yoke. Saw your video and going with two 7' screens. Question, do you find the 7' to be to small to read? Thanks again, happy flying.
The 7" screens felt small at the start, but I quickly adjusted and I've never had any trouble seeing the info. But in the time since I did this work, a couple of STCs have been granted that will allow removal / replacement of the stationary panel. So this winter I probably will do that structural work which will allow me to put in a large IFR GPS Nav/Com - and at the same time I'll upgrade the 7" screens to the 10"
Those are the 'smallest' 8 inch screens - the way the sub panel is configured I couldn't get larger ones in this model of 172 without doing some major structural work. At first I wanted the larger ones (still do), but functionally these are just fine. I'll try to put IFR equipment in before I do the structure to put in larger screens.
Pretty sure the L model has more space between the yoke and the top of the panel, so the larger screens should fit. A great resource for info is Lyle at Six Pack Aero, he has also worked out an STC for later models that allows for a change to the stationary panel without much structural work pain.
These are the smaller 7"HDX screens - The larger screens wouldn't fit this model of 172 without a major rework of the stationary panel. (which is possible, but the airframe work was outside my budget)
@@GlensHangar thanks I appreciate that! Do you find the smaller screens easy enough to read or did you find the info compression a challenge initially? (I’m considering an LSA with dual 7” HDX)
When I found out that the 10" wouldn't fit - I was disappointed and thought that the smaller screens might be a problem. But everything is fine, easy to read and I haven't had any trouble.
Love that panel with the relocation of the cabin heat and parking brake! Also, never worked on 172s that old so didn't know about that single tank restriction above 5000'. Interesting! Below that are yours' feeding equally? A lot of 172s I know have an issue where they feed inequally when set to 'Both'.
Couldn’t agree more about GoPro’s. They’re all over priced garbage and I’m so frustrated with them. I’m regretting getting the Max and not and an Insta 360
@@GlensHangar I am considering fitting a 10" on my panel (different a/c) but still assessing the practicality of a single screen carrying flight information as well as a map. Your two 7" screens do divide these tasks up nicely.
When you’re holding short of the runway, calling tower for takeoff clearance, I’ve always heard it’s more appropriate to say “ready for departure”. Never use the word takeoff unless you’re actually cleared for takeoff.
While I enjoy your technical talks, these videos are worth the price of admission with the scenery. Absolutely beautiful and I feel like I'm in the passenger seat. Thank you
I love that you model good habits by listening to every radio call, not just talking over the radio.
Just me that can't make out most of what's said on those radios? A lot of it is really garbled/clipped.

Matt Cremona is pretty happy with his DJI Action cameras.
Nice vid as always. Would love to see numbers, how much fuel used and how much is cost of ownership, etc
Fuel management is what I like.,
I've switched to mostly DJIs Action 3s, had zero overheating problems, even here in Saigon in the middle of the day. What is that lovely grip you are using to attach to the roof?
There is a Matthellini Clamp, a grip head, and a Mathews Magic Arm in that setup.
Great info, thanks again.
Hi Glen. Have you tried putting AOA up on your Right Dynon Screen? By itself. Just to land?
I would - but it doesn't seem to be an option. Or at least not one that I've found yet.
Planning any travels to the states? I live in northeastern Ohio.
Hi Glen! Great review! Could you describe the ForeFlight-to-HDX transfer, or shoot a video to demonstrate?
The HDX has it's own wifi network, as long as your iPad is connected to the HDX network it's one button to press in ForeFlight to send the flight plan over.
Hey, great video! I have a 1962C and fly out of CSX7. I have been looking at this as an option as well. What is the autopilot option you are looking at?
Not to many options, so I went with this one: ruclips.net/video/166N0g8ntpM/видео.html
Very nice presentation! How on earth do you practice the Dynon at learning stage?? I just cannot fly and “practice” all its functions and on the ground it depletes the battery. I can’t believe they hadn’t made a simulator of this thing.
We hooked up a ground power unit
Did you remember to close your flight plan this time?
Ha! Didn't file for the flight to Chris' shop.
I love your rod support for that Hero... why don't you get those cheap Red Komodo cameras?
I have several of "those cheap RED Komodo cameras" that I use along with lots of other cameras at my production company. The Komodos are way too big to mount outside on a wing, and add a layer of complexity that I don't want to deal with. I want to fly the plane, not worry about cameras.
@@GlensHangar So, no knocking of "those cheap RED Komodo cameras" intended. I say cheap as for a RED camera they are significantly "less expensive" than the big boy RED cameras. I'd love to see how good the Komodo is, but I don't have 5K laying around. ;-) And, sure, I totally understand "worrying about cameras." I've had several bad dreams about losing my cameras on set...
beautiful 172!!
Where did you source your cargo net, I am looking for that exact item. Great video… New Dynon flyer here
Mountain Wave Aviation makes them - I'm really happy with them.
Too bad Dynon isn't going to support your older 172, though
I think the Skyview system looks nice.
Hey Glen, have you looked at cameras that are used for drones? Not sure if it would work at all.
Through the summer and fall it's well within temperature range - winter will be a different story, I'll report back when we have our first -20ºC or below flying day.
what is A O A ? Did you consider an auto pilot - how expensive ... if you have time. Thx for posting
AoA is 'Angle of Attack' - it's the angle of the wing relative to flight (+ other factors), and it gives you a better idea of when the wing will stall Vs. just knowing stall speed.
There is a video where we instal an auto pilot, but choices are limited with these earlier 172 models.
I’m not a pilot so what do I know … but the Garmin stuff looks way better to me!
Glen, how much did it cost installed? I'm in Vancouver BC and considering one.
Any trips planned stateside? With ADSB out you should be good to go right?
Yes, I'll probably fly down to Arkansas this winter to visit my family. Oshkosh is also on the list next summer.
Do you have the 7” screens or 10”? Either way, they look fantastic!
7" - the 10" wouldn't fit in this year of 172 without major mods to the airframe.
So this winter I probably will do that structural work which will allow me to put in a large IFR GPS Nav/Com - and at the same time I'll upgrade the 7" screens to the 10"
Glen, what size are the dynons
Those are the 'smallest' 8 inch screens - the way the sub panel is configured I couldn't get larger ones in this model of 172 without doing some major structural work. At first I wanted the larger ones (still do), but functionally these are just fine. I'll try to put IFR equipment in before I do the structure to put in larger screens.
@@GlensHangar Thank you for the info, looking into the possibility of installing them.
Fabulous video! I am curious as to why you did not opt for the larger Dynon screens?
The larger screens won't fit in this model of 172 - unless you do some major structural work, which was painfully expensive.
@@GlensHangar Gotcha! I've got a 172L and I'm considering a similar set up.
Pretty sure the L model has more space between the yoke and the top of the panel, so the larger screens should fit. A great resource for info is Lyle at Six Pack Aero, he has also worked out an STC for later models that allows for a change to the stationary panel without much structural work pain.
@@GlensHangar Much appreciated, thanks!
Good job
What are you missing with your instrumentation that prevents your plane from being IFR certified?
I need to instal an IFR Nav/Com like an Avidyne IFD 440 / 540 / 550
Glen, how much simulator time do you have for this 172?
Zero - there wouldn't even be a way to simulate this plane, it's been so heavily modified.
IDK if I missed it, but are those the 7" screens? they look small compared to your hands. or you have jumbo hands lol.
Those are the 7" screens - the 10" wouldn't fit in this model 172 without major structural work.
Did you send your oil to Blackstone Labs?
I have used them for years for my car and truck and my Lycoming.
I am interested to see your results.
Yes I did
Glen, does a gopro not have a polarizing filter option?
They do, I've just not yet picked one up.
96% love it (4% hate the reflections)
In person I never see any reflections - the camera picks up a reflection, but while flying your eyes don’t
Hi Glen, are you IFR certified?
Not yet - it's on the list of things to get around to... but who knows if I ever will.
What size HDX are those? Sorry if I missed it
These are the smaller 7"HDX screens - The larger screens wouldn't fit this model of 172 without a major rework of the stationary panel.
@@GlensHangar great to hear! Many thanks and a happy New year!
Where is your gps/navigator or is it built into the screen
It's built in to the system
@@GlensHangar is it ifr certified?
The way it is currently installed - No. Wasn't in my budget at this stage, and since I'm not an IFR pilot I wasn't bothered.
Right tank feeds about 10%-15% more fuel when set to 'both'.
Couldn’t agree more about GoPro’s. They’re all over priced garbage and I’m so frustrated with them. I’m regretting getting the Max and not and an Insta 360
Are those screens 7" or 10"?
7" - the 10 " won't fit in this year of 172 without a major structural modification.
🤓👌✌👍🖖😎
AoA, meh, because gusts are what will get you.
It's a tool, that just like all the other tools at your disposal needs to be understood and used within its limits.
Don't like...glossy screen.
That's a 'trick' of the camera / lens, in real life there is no gloss and no glare in any way. Your eye is different than the camera.
Nice looking plane!
