This is one of the first trick i've learnt when i was a kid, however i used a variant: when placing all the cards face up one by one, i do NOT stop at the selection and turn it face up like the others. Then i keep placing more cards face up and stop later at a random card, and tell the spectators: "the next card i will turn face down will be yours". As they could see their selection was already placed face up with the rest of the cards, they will really believe you screwed up the trick and the next card you will place face down will not be theirs. What you do then is find the selection in the face up pile, and turn it over :)
one tip: if the off chance they cut them a few times and they end up cutting the key card to the bottom which means the selection is the first card you turn over. which is a trick in itself. turn the top card over and look at the reaction and see if it is their card or not. if this happens it is a good opportunity to make this a 2 phase trick where the second seems a bit more impossible than the first.
Tried this trick and it worked better with spectator when i put whole deck on the table let the spectator cut the deck and i took the one half with the bottom key card into my hand and then let spectator put their card on the other half that is on the table.

Maybe take another peek at the bottom card, and if it happens to be the key card, then their card has magically floated to the top.
