    Preliminary Round Recital
    June 4, 2022
    Van Cliburn Concert Hall at TCU
    YUNCHAN LIM
    2022 Cliburn Gold Medalist
    South Korea I Age 18
    MOZART - Sonata No. 9 in D Major, K. 311
    In June 2022, Yunchan Lim became the youngest person ever to win gold at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition; his performances throughout showcased a “magical ability” and a “natural, instinctive quality” (La Scena) that astounded listeners around the world. The depth of his artistry and connection to listeners also secured him the Audience Award and Best Performance of a New Work (for Sir Stephen Hough’s Fanfare Toccata).
    Just 18 years old, Yunchan’s ascent to international stardom has been meteoric. His final Cliburn Competition appearance with Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 3 delivered the defining moment of the three-week event; as one critic noted: “The applause that followed was endless: a star had emerged before our eyes” (Seen and Heard International). The video of that performance trended globally on RUclips in the days after, reaching #25, and has now become the most-watched version of that piece on the platform, amassing more than 5.5 million views in just one month.
    Yunchan has performed across his native South Korea-including with the Korean Orchestra Festival, Korea Symphony, Suwon Philharmonic, and Busan Philharmonic Orchestras, among others-as well as in Madrid, at the invitation of the Korea Cultural Center in Spain. His 2022-2023 inaugural tour as Cliburn winner takes him across four continents, with highlights including the Aspen Music Festival, La Jolla Music Society, and Performing Arts Houston in the United States; Seoul Arts Center, National Concert Hall in Taipei, and the KBS and Korean National Symphony Orchestras in Asia; and recital tours in Europe and South America.

    I love watching his hands play - so refined finger play, well-trained and graceful. His fingers don't go all over the place nor do they look stiff and hard, even his body moves gracefully with his music, never out-of-sync. He's a delight and wonder to watch and listen to. His performance and music are a neat, coherent and perfect piece of art. What an awesome Creator God there is!

      I agree with you, but Sokolov tends to make everything sound a bit like Sokolov. Lim makes this sound simply like Mozart.

    • @damiangilz
      @damiangilz 10 месяцев назад

      @@ThePurplePianist1 Hum to me Sokolov transcends Mozart. I can feel the shape of the music, the roundness of every note. Consider that he won the Tchaikovsky Piano Competition simply because he needed to do it to make a nice career, not because he wanted, and still dominated. Maybe the lack of studio recordings from him doesn't help much his case.
      Hearing Mozart in Lim is not bad at all.

    “연습할 때는 정말 철저하게 부분부분 나눠서 제가 원하는 음악을 만들려고 최선을 다해요. 그런데 무대에서는 그걸 다 잊어버리고 자유로워지려는 노력만 해요. 저도 청중도 없고 음악만 남아서 아무것도 없어지는 것 같은 그런 기분이 들도록요.” (임윤찬)
    [임윤찬의 모차르트 소나타 연주는 본능적이다. 빠른 음악이 뒤를 보지 않고 앞으로만 나아가는데 거의 모든 마디에서 예상을 벗어난다. 뻔한 부분이 없는 그의 모차르트는 자신의 귀와 음악성만 믿고 맹랑하게 나아간다.] (2020년 중앙일보 기사 발췌)
    : 1라운드에서 윤찬 님의 모차르트 소나타를 처음 들었을 때, 한껏 몰입해 있는 모습과 완벽에 가까운 연주에 주체할 수 없는 희열과 숭고함을 느꼈습니다. 소중히 아껴듣던 영상을 분리해 주셔서 감사합니다. ^^ 👍🏻🙏

    음 하나하나가 어쩌면 이렇게 다 영롱하고 아름다운지. 모짜르트 그 자체이면서도 곡에 생명력을 불어넣는 그의 연주에 중독됐어요. 피아노 협주곡도 최고였는데 이 소나타도 정말 최고. Limzart!!!!
