I'd say it'll be the 4th... Best one for last? They usually do 4 singles per album and this is by far the best song on ANY album this year, so anything they released after this would pale in comparison - so I imagine No Line on the Horizon will be the third single and Breathe will be the 4th!
It could be pre-recorded, but I'm 99% sure he's using a loop mechanism to begin recording the rhythm part at 0:25, stops it at 0:36 (you can see him step toward his console for that split second), then he steps on another button to play back the part at 2:52 while he plays over it. KT Tunstall uses a similar effect in her live shows to do multiple guitar & rhythm parts with just 1 person.

I'm not even a big U2 fan at all but I saw them last night in Atlanta and holy shyte they are incredible live!
